Where is Big Sky filmed? Guide to ALL the Filming Locations

Posted by

Big Sky is David E. Kelley's new thriller, the creator of hit series like Ally McBeal, Big Little Lies, Goliath, or more recently The Undoing.

The series is set in Helena, Montana's capital, so the aerial establishing shots of the town are from there. However, Big Sky was filmed in and around Vancouver in British Columbia. For the second and third seasons the show moved to New Mexico.

Big Sky cast

The plot revolves around a team of private detectives, Cassie Dewell (played by Kylie Bunbury who starred in Brave New World) and Jenny Hoyt (Katheryn Winnick, best known for her role as Lagertha in Vikings).

In the first season, the star duo is investigating the disappearance of the Sullivan sisters (Natalie Alyn Lind and Jade Pettyjohn), who were kidnapped by long-haul trucker Ronald Pergman (Brian Geraghty). John Carroll Lynch also plays a key role as highway patrol Rick Legarski.

Congratulations! You’ve made it to the ultimate guide to Big Sky’s filming locations (at least for season one!). Now let’s get started:

Big Sky house
Dewell and Hoyt Private Investigations office is located in a baby clothing store called Watermelon in Fort Langley.

Cassie's house is located close to the office on Church Street. Also, Merilee's quilt store is just across the street and down a bit from Cassie's office - it's in the shop called Pomp Go Be Pretty.

From the second season on, the office exterior was filmed in a building at 122 Broadway Boulevard in Albuquerque.

The town in Helena Montana
Big Sky also filmed scenes in Downtown Vancouver. After the fight in the Hammerhead bar, the girls recover from their wounds in the fictional Lewis and Clark medical clinic that was set up in an empty store on Homer Street.

Squamish Forest and Pitt Meadows
The great outdoors shown in the series were filmed in the Squamish Valley.

The road less traveled through Yellowstone, where Natalie and Grace are intercepted by Ronald, looks like the gorgeous arboreal rainforest near Squamish.

This moss-covered forest was also featured in a scene in Leonardo DiCaprio's The Revenant and is one of the locations where the Syfy series Resident Alien is filmed.

Thomas Joseph Brown house
Ronald's home is the Thomas Joseph Brown house at 13275 Colebrook Road in Surrey.

This cross-gabled homestead manor of the early 1900s with a wraparound veranda was also featured in Supernatural and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

But it is especially notable as the house used in one of the best and darkest episodes of the X-Files, “Home” (Season 4, Episode 2).

Dirty Spoon restaurant
The Dirty Spoon diner is the old Michael's Family Restaurant at 37165 Lougheed Hwy in Deroche.

At the beginning of the fourth episode, there is a scene filmed at The Blackberry Kitchen restaurant in Mission.

Service station truck parking lot in Hope
The truck stop is the Esso Gas Station located on the outskirts of Hope.

The city is located 96 miles (154 km) east of Vancouver, in the gorgeous Fraser Valley.

This is one of the locations where Percy Jackson was filmed.

Big Sky drehorte
This scene with Cody Hoyt (Ryan Phillippe) from the first episode was shot at the Hatzic Prairie Market, located in the middle of nowhere at 10814 Farms Rd in Fraser Valley.

Big Sky farm
The farm where the girls are held is on Stave Lake Road just before it runs into Dale Road in Fraser Valley.

Church of the Glory and Transcendence
The Church of the Glory and Transcendence building from the third episode is the VanDusen Botanical Garden visitors center in West Side, Vancouver.

Sheriff office
The Lewis and Clark County sheriff's office is the historic Fort Langley Community Hall.

It may be familiar as this is the same building where Riverdale's Town Hall was filmed.

Fort Langley is a cute town that has been used as a location for many shows and movies produced in the Vancouver area.

Cody funeral scene
The barn of the funeral scene in episode 6 is located at 13846 40th Avenue in Surrey.

Blue house
The house where Jerrie (played by Jesse James Keitel) goes to stay with friends in episode seven may be familiar to you if you are a Hallmark movies fan - it's located at 11567 Fir Street in Maple Ridge near the Pinestone Lake Lodge.

Trooper Legarski and his wife Merilee's home is located at 4532 Arthur Drive, Delta.

St Helena Hospital
The St. Helena Hospital is the North Lawn building of the old Riverview complex in Coquitlam, which has been used a hundred times in multiple productions before.

The All In bar
One of our readers (thank you N.J.) pointed out that the mysterious location of The All In bar is on Squamish Valley Road, 16 miles Northwest of Brackendale past the Squamish valley campground.

N.J. commented: I would truly love to know who and how all the logistics were set up to go shoot at such a remote, set location! Did they haul or drive the ENTIRE cast’s different vehicles? Did the actors go along when the vehicles were sent? Once you see how far this is from other filming locations, you're going to have a lot of questions too.

Pillath House Surrey
In the second part of the first season, Ronald gets away. He's pretending to be a meal-delivery driver named Arthur, dating a single mother named Scarlett.

The beautiful house of Scarlett's sister, Mary, is the Pillath House, a magnificent heritage home built in 1898, located at 11113 148 Street in Surrey.

The New Mexico Film Office confirmed that ABC relocated production of the second season to Rio Rancho in New Mexico.

Season 3: Deadly Trails

TAG
In the first episode of season 3, "Do You Love An Apple", there's a scene filmed at the Waves Salon in the Huning Highlands neighborhood of Albuquerque.

    1. Had found this on Google Earth yesterday along with the farm with all the barns where the girls were being held before being moved but didn't have time to get back on here until now. Few more scenes from s1e05 shot in this area too but where in the world is 'The All In?'

    2. Thanks, but you forgot to add the location!

    3. Sorry, didn't want to repeat the Dirty Spoon as the post before me is correct that it's at 10814 Farms Road. The farm where the girls were held is on Stave Lake Road just before it runs into Dale Road. 49.1996154, -122.2668266 should put you right on top of the barn the girls held in. The bridge covered with leaves that Cassie and Jenny cross on the way to encounter Legarski is just to the north of the Dirty Spoon .24km
Hope someone finds or knows where The All In is at, I've spent to many hours scouring Google Earth and Apple Maps trying to locate it.

  7. The scene in the first episode when the two girls are exiting the freeway, is the Annis road exit on highway one in chilliwack, only 30 mins from the esso truck stop in hope

  8. Come on, where in the Vancouver, BC area is 'The All In?'
I personally have looked all around the Hope, BC area, to the south, to the north, plus up the coastline to Squamish with no luck.
Anyways here is Trooper Legarski and wife Merilee's home as shown in s1e06 airing 1/26/2021

    1. I haven't given up on finding it although my wife thinks I've spent way to much time looking lol. When I located the barn the girls were held in I was actually looking for 'The All In' just skimming the edges of the mountains. It appears to be near Hope, BC. If you open GE and tilt it 2 of the mountain tops look similar enough to be the one in the background scene at the start of s1e06. I've even reached out to some of the actors on social media for a hint with no luck for the effort.

  10. Hi there. Thanks for posting. Ronalds house is the “Thomas Joseph Brown” house at 13275 Colebrook Road in Surrey. Also used in Supernatural and Sabrina as Theo’s house but is especially noteable as the house used in the creepy episode of the XFiles, “Home”. Looks like they painted it to use it for Big Sky.

  11. The hospital that they are using (that Legarski is in) is at Riverview - the North Lawn building. It is used in a lot of productions. The windows on the side of the building are the same as when Merilee is talking to Cassie.

    https://thecamerasview.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/riverview-3.jpg

Also - Merilee's quilt shop is just across the street and down a bit from Cassie's office - it's in the shop called "Pomp Go Be Pretty" in Fort Langley.

    Thanks

  12. s1ep07 Jerrie goes to stay with friends at this very familiar house due to it being in many Hallmark movies.

Wish I had money to offer a bounty on 'The All In' LOL

  13. Hi there. Found the barn where they had Cody's funeral. Was driving home (near Ronald's house) and saw big lights one night. They typically film at multiple places in the same area. 13846 40th Ave Surrey.

  14. We're No Angels was filmed at Stave Lake, the dam was used in many shots. You could see the old cars and people dressed in 1930's clothing as they would often be seen on the Dewdney Trunk Road. Find those pictures to add to your collection. After the filming we could still go to the buildings and look inside. One memorable one was the drugstore with the old apothacary bottles, soaps, etc in the window.

    1. They are filming at the Sundance Pub and Inn again Thursday and Friday March 11 and 12. The Grey Cliff Inn sign is back up and we got a filming notice. Some stunt action happening. They also film at a house just down the road.

  16. This is said to be filmed in Helena, MT. I live in Helena and it is actually too bad they didn't film more here in Helena. Helena has amazing historical buildings which actually would have enhanced the show. All the Ariel shots are of Helena. If you watch Yellowstone there is some amazing scenery that was actually filmed in Montana.

  17. No bounty to be offered for 'The All In' LOL.

'The All In' is on Squamish Valley Road 16 miles Northwest of Brackendale. Coordinates posted below.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner than now but this is my 1st time back since I posted the above on April 13. I'll see if I can locate that video again. I had it downloaded to my laptop so I could scrub through it but deleted a few weeks ago. I just did a search for 'drives up Squamish Valley Road' and found several. If I locate it again I'll share the link.

  18. Filming tomorrow (April 23) last day of filming for the season at Ronald and Scarlet’s house. 7100 Ladner Trunk Road in Delta. It’s just down the road from the “Grey Cliff Inn” (The Sundance Pub) - but they aren’t coming back there this time.

  19. Filmed for ~4 days in Coquitlam, between Harper Park and (possibly in) Pinecone Burke Provincial Park, April 15-19 2021. Harper Road @ Upper Harper Road.

  23. Definitely some Albuquerque there. And I recognize a lot of Rio Rancho as I live in ABQ, just a few blocks from Rio Rancho. Good to know my fav actor (Jensen Ackles) has been/is in my tiny area of the world!

  24. The Dewell & Hoyt Offices in Albuquerque was being filmed, according to a tweet, opposite her school, apparently, but no further details. I assume they would use the same place for the external shots every time.

  25. Is the karate school in season 2 episode 9 in Albuquerque?

  26. The restaurant that Tonya works at and later buys with Donno is on Central and Bridge in Albuquerque. The same restaurant was in the music video “Meant to be” by Florida Georgia line. And in a few other shows. It’s only a few blocks from my house.

The motel that Scarlet takes Ronald to after Cassie stabs him and he kills the maid is on Broadway in Albuquerque. It used to be a feed store. Now it’s a movie set.

The parking garage where Jenny and Stone lose T-Lock is in downtown Albuquerque by the library. From there, he goes to meet for the money drop and gets shot. That’s in a place we call “Kenny Brick“ off Second St and Broadway in Albuquerque.
