The Umbrella Academy Filming Locations Guide: The house and the city where the Netflix series is filmed

Where is The Umbrella Academy filmed
Posted by
The return of The Umbrella Academy is one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The Netflix series is an adaptation for television of the popular comic book of the same name by Gerard Way (the singer of the rock band My Chemical Romance), illustrated by Gabriel Bá.

The story revolves around the seven members of a dysfunctional family of adopted super-powered kids, raised by a peculiar millionaire. After the mysterious death of their mentor, the group has to team up to resolve what happened to him. The troupe will have to do what everybody is expecting from a squad of superheroes: to save the world from imminent destruction.

The cast in season two
The main cast includes Ellen Page (Juno, Inception) as The White Violin, Tom Hopper (Game of Thrones) as the strong Spaceboy, Robert Sheehan (Misfits) as the psychic drug addict The Séance, Emmy Raver-Lampman as the manipulative liar The Rumor, David Castañeda (Sicario 2) as the troublemaker The Kraken, and Aidan Gallagher completes the gang as the time-traveler The Boy.

Set in an unspecified city that is believed to be New York, The Umbrella Academy was filmed in and around Toronto and Hamilton (Ontario, Canada). We have exclusive information about the filming locations of the series. We will be updating this spoiler-free report with more details about season 2 very soon.

Where is The Umbrella Academy filmed?

The shoot in Dallas
Most of season two is set in Dallas, Texas, but only establishing shots of Dealey Plaza’s Grassy Knoll (where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated) were recorded in the city. The street where lots of scenes are taking place is located at Ottawa St N & Britannia Ave in Hamilton. The film crew dressed exteriors of store windows to look like the 1960s. The Dallas skyline was added digitally to the background.

Morty's Television and Radio shop
It seems that the Stadtler's Restaurant and the Ladies Beauty Parlor interiors were also filmed here on location. However, Elliott's store facade (Morty's Television and Radio) is a CGI creation (compare the building on the top right with the beauty salon below). The beautiful Morty's Art Deco interiors were built in a soundstage. The movie theater Avon, the butcher shop with a cow on the roof, the alley behind Commerce and Knox... everything is there on Ottawa St. If you switch Street View to June and August 2019 in Google Maps you can virtually walk into the set!

Where is The Umbrella Academy set
The Neoclassical mansion where Klaus started a cult is the Parkwood Estate in Oshawa. Built in 1916 by Samuel McLaughlin, founder of General Motors of Canada, this historic manor with Italian gardens and beautiful fountains boasts 15,000 square feet (1,400 m2). The stately home has 55 rooms and is a Canadian National Historic Site. Amazon Prime series The Boys and Netflix's Self Made also shot scenes here.

Luther Hargreeves bar and prison
The burlesque bar where Luther works is the Germania Club of Hamilton. The Dallas Police Station that appears briefly in episode two is a digitally altered stock image of the Maricopa County Courthouse, the Old Phoenix City Hall in Arizona. Rooming House for Solitary Men
The Rooming House For Solitary Men exteriors and Klaus bar interior from episode one is the Vienna Tavern in Hamilton. The D.S. Umbrella Manufacturing Company is the old FW McLachlan Road-Building-Contractors on Fairbank Ave in York (Toronto). The warehouse from episode 5 is the Westinghouse Headquarters at 286 Sanford Ave. N. Image courtesy of Netflix - Maps: Vienna Tavern / D.S. Umbrella Warehouse / Warehouse 2

Diner and shop
The diner bar where Five and Vanya have a coffee in episode 3 is the Breezy Corners restaurant near Gage Park in Hamilton’s East side. The Glen Oaks hardware store from the same episode is a shop at 765 Barton St E in Stipley (Hamilton). Image courtesy of Netflix - Maps: Restaurant / Store

Sissy Cooper farm
Sissy’s Cooper farmhouse interior was shot on a stage. The exterior was built near a previously existing barn in the countryside. Allison and her new husband Raymond live in a house at 75 Graham Ave S in Hamilton's Delta East neighborhood. The Swedes house exterior in episode 5 is located at 10 Keith St in Hamilton.

Southland Life
The Mexican embassy from episode four is the Georgian-style mansion McLean House in the Estates of Sunnybrook (midtown Toronto). In episode six, the family reunites with his father in a building called Southland Life. This is Hamilton's City Hall, featuring a beautiful mural created by George Franklin Arbuckle in the sixties. However, the Tiki Lounge on the top is a studio build. Lila and the Handler play bingo at Her Majesty's Army And Navy Veterans Society, also in Hamilton.

Season One Filming Locations

The Umbrella Academy Location

The Umbrella Academy House
In this aerial view of the block of houses where The Umbrella Academy mansion is located, we can compare the work of the CGI team with the image below extracted from Google Maps. The courtyard shown in the funeral scene (the very first image of this report) is the Joey & Toby Tanenbaum Opera Centre in Toronto. However, the interiors of the house is a set built in the studios. Ou est tourne Umbrella Academy
Also in Hamilton, the scene of the bank robbery with the young kids was filmed in the LIUNA Station (the Canadian National Railway Station) at 360 James St. N. Image courtesy of Netflix and Saforrest - Map

Donut store shoot set
Film crews refurbished an old cafe at 1187 Queen St West in Toronto to film the cool quick service restaurant Griddy's Doughnuts. However, if you look for it in Google Maps, the building doesn't exist anymore. Most of the series was filmed in Toronto, although the filmmakers were somehow hiding Ontario's capital landmarks. The skyline of the city in episode one, filmed in The Port Lands (Toronto Harbour-Pier 35), was CGI'd adding new skyscrapers, but no sign of the CN Tower. Image courtesy of Netflix and Google Maps

The Umbrella Academy drehort
The Icarus Theater is an amalgam of locations. In the first and last episode, Vanya plays the violin in the Elgin Theatre at 189 Yonge Street. However, the exterior in episode 4 was filmed in the Massey Hall in Victoria St. Both locations were also featured in Guillermo del Toro's 2017 movie The Shape of Water. The organ hall where Vanya goes to rehearsal with the orchestra is the Mazzoleni Concert Hall of The Royal Conservatory of Music.

Vanya flat street Toronto
Vanya's apartment exterior is located in Queen St E. Filming notifications posted around the city informed that further filming took place in the Little Portugal area and in Cube NightClub at 314 Queen Street West (episode 7th). The Meritech prosthetics building pictured below is the Lash Miller Chemical Laboratories of the University of Toronto. Image courtesy of Netflix - Maps:Flat / Meritech

Communist pool and pawn store
The Soviet swimming pool scene from the first episode was filmed at the Wallace Emerson Community Centre in Toronto. The Pawn Shop is located in King St E in Hamilton. The department store scenes were filmed at the Treasure Hunt shop in Waterdown, just outside of Hamilton. Images courtesy of Netflix - Maps: Swimming pool / Shop

workshop and market store
The mechanic's workshop from episode 2 is located at 146 Ossington Avenue. The Queens Mini Mart from episode 3 is a convenience shop at 1666 Queen St W (both in Toronto).
Images courtesy of Netflix - Maps: Workshop - Supermarket

Senior ex-combatants and bar set
The Vietnam Veterans of Foreign Wars place where Klaus and Diego stop by in episode 5 is the Moose Lodge at 3753 Lake Shore Blvd W. The restaurant where Vanya and Leonard have coffee in the same episode is the East Thirty-Six bar at 36 Wellington St E, also in Toronto. Images courtesy of Netflix - Maps: Lodge - Bar

Ice cream van frozen time sequence
The meeting place with the Handler in a countryside road at the end of episode 5 is located near Dyment's Market in Fallsview Rd E, Hamilton. Image courtesy of Netflix and Google Maps

Temps Aeternalis Astronomical observatory
The Commission organization headquarters, runned by The Handler, is the David Dunlap Observatory in Richmond Hill. Some rooms are sets built on stage. Image courtesy of Netflix - Map

Argyle Public Library
The Lillian H. Smith Library in Toronto doubles as the Argyle Public Library. The park where Luther and Allison dance in episode 6 is located in Allan Gardens. Images courtesy of Netflix - Library Map / Allan Gardens Map

Forest Lodge
Leonard's cabin in the woods is the same location used in Netflix's Polar movie, filmed somewhere outside Toronto.

Hotel scene
The Rain Quail Bed and Breakfast where Hazel and Agnes go in episode 8 is the Rosebud Motel from Schitt's Creek series, at 308351 Hockley Rd in Orangeville. Image courtesy of Netflix and Google Maps

Umbrella Academy City
The Victorian vintage scenes from episode 10 were filmed in the historic industrial complex Cotton Factory in Hamilton. The buildings in the background and sections of the street were CGI'd in post-production. The driving scene from the last episode was filmed at Bay St, the iconic Toronto Old City Hall clock tower appears in one of the shots. The bowling alley is the Richmond Hill Pro Bowl. 7. Is the interior of the house the same set used in the haunting of hill house and alterd carbon?

    ReplyDelete

    1. No because The Haunting of Hill House was filmed in Atlanta and I Altered Carbon in Vancouver. But at first I thought the same because of the movements of the camera and the way some sequences are filmed.

  8. The interior shots of the offices the time people work at are in Casa Loma and one of the locations Vanya goes for her ? audition or rehearsal I can't remember, is Brookfield Plaza across from Union.

  9. last episode 10 in the series, looks like Distillery district in Toronto

    ReplyDelete

    1. Could be the Distillery District but it also looks like some pick-up work was done at The Imperial Cotton Company in Hamilton (270 Sherman Ave N.) as well. TICC has buildings of similar Victorian vintage and is very popular with location scouts because it's out of the way and less expensive to shoot at than busy Toronto places like the Distillery District.

    2. Thanks Robert, definitely it's the Cotton Factory and not the Distillery District; Both places share the same Victorian architectonic style.

  18. The front of the house, in Hamilton used to be the Embassy nightclub for many many years. When still operating as a nightclub, the back portion caught fire and ceased to operate. Prior to that, it was a bank if I recall. The gates are portable and the concrete pylons they are attached to do not exist on the actual building. The door, exterior lights, and shrubbery were also added or changed. As of this date, some of the other storefronts are real, Red Church for example. If you drove by it now, it's very easy to pick out as the door is bright blue, as where it was wood and glass in the show and solid wood when it operated as a nightclub. It looks like there's something going on inside. There are some scenes in the show (police station interior, parts of the house interior) which look like they could be inside the same building, or at least drew inspiration from the original architecture of the building, particularly the wrap around balcony.

The scene where 5 is in the car with a knife to the neck of the guy from Meritech, is at the corner of Lower Church st and Esplanade, the same street Titans blew up that car on (closer to the Front St E. corner), the same corner the outside shooting location of the nightclub robin's old friend works as a bodyguard at.

  40. The downtown Dallas Skyline is extremely accurate. All of the buildings in the shots were what you would’ve seen from Commerce Street in the 60’s. Many of those particular buildings are now blocked by much larger buildings today but the they managed to do the downtown extremely well.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hamilton seems to be the go-to place for productions needing the look of early 60's Dallas -- 11.22.63 also made great use of Hamilton's plethora of post-WWII brick houses and business facades that still resemble what they originally looked like back in the day. Case in point, they didn't have to do a lot of set dressing to that stretch of Ottawa Street to give it an early 60's flavor. The less CGI you can get away with the better in some instances.

  41. Tired up to HERE with Canada standing in for US locations. It shows that Umbrella Academy is fully funded by Canadian money. All I can say is this. When I landed at Toronto Airport - Revenue Canada asked why my job couldn't be done by Canadians. So I have the same question. Why can a comic book series, created by a Milwaukie, Oregon based US company not survive without Canadian locations? Dallas has perfectly adequate mansions, Texas has great small towns that could have stood in. But the almight DO-LLAR supersedes all sense of fairness. If I see one more Canadian movie or series with the FBI located in downtown Toronto I'm going to scream!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because film production companies follow the money. Tax credits and transferable rebates are a big part of production funding, and co productions in Canada allow companies to take full advantage of these, which can be as high as 40 percent of the budget. Most states in America do not offer these deals. So, if you were a film business, where would you go? An American city where you have to pay everything out of pocket, or a Canadian city where they will pay you to come film there? Its just business, and it just makes sense.

    3. Thanks a lot! Were the Morty's store Art Deco interiors also built in a set? Please let us know if you have any more locations :)

      Delete
    4. Morty's interior and exterior were on a soundstage. Sissy's INT. was on a stage and the EXT. was a location build. The barn existed. Klaus' bar INT. was the Vienna Tavern in Hamilton with the EXT. in a different location. The Commission was again at The David Dunlap Observatory, with some elements built on stage. Last one I'll give is DS Umbrella. This is the old FW Mclachlan Construction Building on Fairbank Ave. in Toronto. NASA was also in the same location. Over and out.

      Delete
    5. Just to be clear, the Tiki Lounge wasn't inspired by any Toronto location. If there are similarities, they are coincidental.

      Delete
    6. Awesome, update coming soon. It seems that the only relevant locations missing are the barn, the mexican embassy, the rooming house exteriors, the Dallas Police facade (episode 2), the abandoned warehouse in episode 5 and the walking bridge over the railway line in episode 9.

      Delete
    7. Came to say the same. While the decor shares similarities (most tiki bars do!) there is absolutely no way it was shot inside Shameful Tiki Toronto. Having spent countless evenings in that bar I can tell you it's an architectural impossibly, like most Toronto storefront spaces Shameful Tiki can't be more than 20 feet wide, if that, and looks nothing like the space in the show.

The storefront currently (Aug 2020) has a 'coming soon' sign for a Burger Lab location. The Avon theater is right next door -- but hasn't been an actual theater for at least 20 years. A church seen in some shots down the street is at the corner of Ottawa and Cannon streets. When I visited the location shoot they were using the church as a place for the period costume extras to congregate between takes and likely to suit up and apply makeup.

  49. S2E05 Luther goes to visit his father. As the bus pulls in there is a shot looking NW from the distinctive fountain in Gore Park (Hamilton). A couple of modern buildings are removed, and a Money Mart sign is altered to look like something more 1960s. If you are standing at this spot in the real world and turn 180 degrees you will be in front of the actual building whose facade doubled as the Academy in Season 1. Luther actually gets off the bus in front of of the 'real' Academy. A nice little bit of real world 360 degree scene continuity you don't see all that often in these days of 'everything CGI'.
