Where was Polar filmed? The Triple Oak Town in Montana Filming Location

Where was Polar filmed
Posted by
Polar is a neo-noir action thriller based upon the 2013 graphic novel by Victor Santos Polar: Came From the Cold. The main thread of the plot is a bit like Keanu Reeves' films of John Wick: Duncan Vizla, also known as The Black Kaiser, is a former hitman forced out of retirement after someone tries to kill him. Duncan is a kind of one-man-army style superhero, who will have to face a gang of younger assassins.

If the style of the movie feels a bit like a video clip, maybe it is because Swedish director Jonas Ã…kerlund is specialized in filming music videos (from Madonna to U2, Lady Gaga or The Rolling Stones). The cast features Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Doctor Strange, Rogue One), Vanessa Hudgens (Powerless), Katheryn Winnick (Vikings) and Matt Lucas (Little Britain, Alice in Wonderland).

Polar was filmed in and around Toronto
. An important section of this Netflix production is set in the fictional town of Triple Oak, Montana. Here are some of the most relevant spoiler-free filming locations of the movie:

The company castle
The Damocles Enterprises headquarters was filmed in the Gothic revival style house Casa Loma in Toronto. As you can check in the image, the visual effects team digitally surrounded the 19th-century manor with a set of buildings, and added and removed some architectural elements to the ensemble.

Polar was filmed in the Cinespace Studios in Toronto. A shoot for a nightmarish scene was set near The Omni King Edward Hotel in King St W (pictured). Image courtesy of Netflix and Google Maps

Polar movie house lake
According to Canadian actor Robert Maillet (who plays helicopter pilot and killer Karl), the cabin in the woods by a lake was filmed outside Toronto. He also commented that the crew had to use artificial snow due to low snowfall levels. We reckon that sections of this image (like the mountains in the background) were added using CGI. The neighboring Camille's house is the same used in Hannibal series, season 3.

The soviet Hotel
The Misk Plaza hotel in Belarus is the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. The hall (with the clock) and the interior scenes were also shot there. Image courtesy of Netflix and Google Maps

  1. I was wondering where is the house in the opening scene shoot at?

  2. The location for the cabins and lake are said, under the photos, to be outside of Toronto. That's pretty "far outside" Toronto....like the Grande Tetons, or somewhere with rugged mountains in the background. There's nothing like those mountain peaks in a hundred plus miles of Toronto.
Please try again to correctly tell the site of the cabins.

    1. Sorry, we just added a few more details about this location. We are pretty sure that the mountains in the background were altered using some digital effects, and that's why it's quite hard to find the exact location of the lake and the cabins.

  3. Where was the trailer park scene shot at?

    1. Which trailer park scene? More details, please.

  4. Curious if the house in the opening scenes is the same location as Will Graham’s house in Hannibal (after he gets married)?

    1. That's what I thought, too, especially the house the neighbor lives in with the porch that can be crawled under (such as when the wife and stepson hide under there from Dolarhyde).

    2. It is exactly the same cabin.

Compare Hannibal Season 3 Episode 8 when Jack Crawford visits will at the cabin, and when Duncan in Polar is searching for Camille after the junkie in the motel scene.

    3. Thank you guys, definitely it is the same place. Located somewhere in Ontario...

    4. It was also used in the show "In the Dark".

  5. Yep, friends it drove me nutz trying to locate spectacular mountain vista behind the cabin on the lake...the backgrounds apparently co-located by computer activities certainly gave a
dream quality to a very harsh, revealing element of humans. The scenic choices and assembly of natural beauty was such a contrast and did expand such, the actors on stage personalities.

  6. The chick's cabin is also used in the new series...Umbrella Academy...ep 8

  7. Hello! My name is John Daniel Montano, you can find me on Facebook. I don't have an account there.

I was curious if the Miami scene and the other places the A-team checks were also filmed in Canada. Just very curious thank you.

  8. Pretty sure house in opening sequence is Deadmau5's

    1. Hey guys, we checked this location. Deadmau5 house looks very similar to the one used in Polar, but it's not the same one.

    2. It is his, he even said it himself.
