Where was The Umbrella Academy filmed? Hotel Obsidian, the house & all the locations

Posted by

The return of The Umbrella Academy in its third season is one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

The Netflix series is a television adaptation of the popular comic book of the same name by Gerard Way (the singer of the rock band My Chemical Romance), illustrated by Gabriel Bá.

Where is The Umbrella Academy filmed

Set in an unspecified city that is believed to be New York, The Umbrella Academy was filmed in and around Toronto and Hamilton in Ontario, Canada.

The story revolves around the seven members of a dysfunctional family of adopted super-powered kids, raised by a peculiar millionaire.

After the mysterious disappearance of their mentor, the group has to put aside their differences to resolve what happened to him.

The cast in season two

The troupe will have to do what everybody is expecting from a squad of superheroes: saving the world from imminent destruction.

Welcome to the internet’s ultimate guide to The Umbrella Academy’s filming locations.

We are updating and expanding this (almost) spoiler-free report with the new locations of season three, featuring the Obsidian Hotel.

The Umbrella Academy House

The Umbrella Academy Location
The entrance to the Umbrella Academy house, the old mansion belonging to Sir Reginald Hargreeves AKA The Monocle, is a building located at 4 King Street E in Hamilton.

In this aerial view of the block of houses where The Umbrella Academy mansion is located, we can compare the work of the CGI team with the image below extracted from Google Maps.

The courtyard shown in the funeral scene (the very first image of this report) is the Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Opera Centre in Toronto.

However, the interior of the house is a set built in the studios.

Donut store shoot set
Film crews refurbished an old cafe at 1187 Queen Street West in Toronto to film the cool, quick-service restaurant Griddy's Doughnuts. However, if you look for it in Google Maps, the building doesn't exist anymore.

Most of the series was filmed in Toronto, but the filmmakers somehow hid Ontario's capital landmarks. The city skyline in episode one, filmed in The Port Lands (Toronto Harbour-Pier 35), was CGI'd by adding new skyscrapers, but no sign of the CN Tower.

The Umbrella Academy drehort
The Icarus Theater is an amalgam of locations. In the first and last episode, Vanya plays the violin in the Elgin Theatre at 189 Yonge Street.

The exterior in episode 4, "Man on the Moon", was filmed in Massey Hall on Victoria Street. Both locations were also featured in Guillermo del Toro's 2017 movie The Shape of Water.

The organ hall where Vanya goes to rehearsal with the orchestra is the Mazzoleni Concert Hall of The Royal Conservatory of Music.

Vanya's apartment exterior is located on Queen Street E.

Filming notifications posted around the city informed that further filming took place in the Little Portugal area.

Cotton Factory in Hamilton
The Victorian vintage scenes from episode ten, "The White Violin", were filmed in the Cotton Factory in Hamilton.

The buildings in the background and sections of the street were CGI'd in post-production.

This location also appeared in the third episode of the third season, "Pocket Full of Lightning," when Klaus dives into the Sparrow Academy's house.

Umbrella Academy City
The driving scene from the last episode was filmed on Bay Street, the iconic Toronto Old City Hall clock tower appears in one of the screenshots.

The bowling alley, pictured, is the Richmond Hill Pro Bowl.

New Season 2 Filming Locations

The series in Dallas
Most of season two is set in Dallas, Texas. However, only aerial footage of Dealey Plaza’s Grassy Knoll (where President John F. Kennedy was hit in the head) was recorded in the city.

The street where lots of scenes are taking place is located at Ottawa Street N and Britannia Avenue in Hamilton.

The film crew dressed exteriors of store windows to look like the 1960s. The Dallas skyline was added digitally to the background.

Morty's Television and Radio shop
The Stadtler's Restaurant and the Ladies Beauty Parlor interiors were also filmed in Hamilton.

Elliott's store facade (Morty's Television and Radio) is a CGI creation (compare the building on the top right with the beauty salon below).

The beautiful Morty's Art Deco interiors were built in a soundstage. The movie theater Avon, the butcher shop with a cow on the roof, the alley behind Commerce and Knox... everything is there on Ottawa Street. If you switch Street View to June and August 2019 in Google Maps, you can virtually walk into the set!

Where is The Umbrella Academy set
The Neoclassical mansion where Klaus started a cult is the Parkwood Estate in Oshawa.

Built in 1916 by Samuel McLaughlin, founder of General Motors of Canada, this historic manor with Italian gardens and beautiful fountains boasts 15,000 square feet (1,400 m2).

The stately home has 55 rooms and is a Canadian National Historic Site. Amazon Prime series The Boys also filmed scenes here. You’ll find a wonderful article revealing all the locations where The Boys was filmed following this link.

The Obsidian Hotel and Season 3 Locations

Umbrella Academy hotel
The Hotel Obsidian at 118 King Street seems a mix of John Wick's charismatic Continental Hotel and the obscure version of the Aztec Palace Hotel from The Queen's Gambit.

Like Hotel Oblivion, the interior looks like a large studio set, but Atlas of Wonders has tracked down the location of the exterior.

The Obsidian Hotel
The Obsidian Hotel is the Royal Connaught Hotel in downtown Hamilton.

Erected in 1914, the building was converted into condominiums between 2014-2018 and renamed Residences of Royal Connaught.

The neon-light sign CGI'd on top is inspired by the one of the famous Fairmont Royal York in Toronto.

In episode six, "Marigold", Viktor tries to take back his powers from Harlan in a drive-in movie theatre.

This is Oakville's 5 Drive-In with a vintage diner, opened in 1964.

Hotel Obsidian White Buffalo suite
The "Wedding at the End of the World" from episode eight was filmed in the Governor’s Room at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto.

    1. No because The Haunting of Hill House was filmed in Atlanta and I Altered Carbon in Vancouver. But at first I thought the same because of the movements of the camera and the way some sequences are filmed.

    1. Could be the Distillery District but it also looks like some pick-up work was done at The Imperial Cotton Company in Hamilton (270 Sherman Ave N.) as well. TICC has buildings of similar Victorian vintage and is very popular with location scouts because it's out of the way and less expensive to shoot at than busy Toronto places like the Distillery District.

      Delete
    2. Thanks Robert, definitely it's the Cotton Factory and not the Distillery District; Both places share the same Victorian architectonic style.

  18. The front of the house, in Hamilton used to be the Embassy nightclub for many many years. When still operating as a nightclub, the back portion caught fire and ceased to operate. Prior to that, it was a bank if I recall. The gates are portable and the concrete pylons they are attached to do not exist on the actual building. The door, exterior lights, and shrubbery were also added or changed. As of this date, some of the other storefronts are real, Red Church for example. If you drove by it now, it's very easy to pick out as the door is bright blue, as where it was wood and glass in the show and solid wood when it operated as a nightclub. It looks like there's something going on inside. There are some scenes in the show (police station interior, parts of the house interior) which look like they could be inside the same building, or at least drew inspiration from the original architecture of the building, particularly the wrap around balcony.

  40. The downtown Dallas Skyline is extremely accurate. All of the buildings in the shots were what you would’ve seen from Commerce Street in the 60’s. Many of those particular buildings are now blocked by much larger buildings today but the they managed to do the downtown extremely well.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hamilton seems to be the go-to place for productions needing the look of early 60's Dallas -- 11.22.63 also made great use of Hamilton's plethora of post-WWII brick houses and business facades that still resemble what they originally looked like back in the day. Case in point, they didn't have to do a lot of set dressing to that stretch of Ottawa Street to give it an early 60's flavor. The less CGI you can get away with the better in some instances.

  41. Tired up to HERE with Canada standing in for US locations. It shows that Umbrella Academy is fully funded by Canadian money. All I can say is this. When I landed at Toronto Airport - Revenue Canada asked why my job couldn't be done by Canadians. So I have the same question. Why can a comic book series, created by a Milwaukie, Oregon based US company not survive without Canadian locations? Dallas has perfectly adequate mansions, Texas has great small towns that could have stood in. But the almight DO-LLAR supersedes all sense of fairness. If I see one more Canadian movie or series with the FBI located in downtown Toronto I'm going to scream!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because film production companies follow the money. Tax credits and transferable rebates are a big part of production funding, and co productions in Canada allow companies to take full advantage of these, which can be as high as 40 percent of the budget. Most states in America do not offer these deals. So, if you were a film business, where would you go? An American city where you have to pay everything out of pocket, or a Canadian city where they will pay you to come film there? Its just business, and it just makes sense.

    4. Morty's interior and exterior were on a soundstage. Sissy's INT. was on a stage and the EXT. was a location build. The barn existed. Klaus' bar INT. was the Vienna Tavern in Hamilton with the EXT. in a different location. The Commission was again at The David Dunlap Observatory, with some elements built on stage. Last one I'll give is DS Umbrella. This is the old FW Mclachlan Construction Building on Fairbank Ave. in Toronto. NASA was also in the same location. Over and out.

      Delete
    5. Just to be clear, the Tiki Lounge wasn't inspired by any Toronto location. If there are similarities, they are coincidental.

      Delete
    6. Awesome, update coming soon. It seems that the only relevant locations missing are the barn, the mexican embassy, the rooming house exteriors, the Dallas Police facade (episode 2), the abandoned warehouse in episode 5 and the walking bridge over the railway line in episode 9.

      Delete
    7. Came to say the same. While the decor shares similarities (most tiki bars do!) there is absolutely no way it was shot inside Shameful Tiki Toronto. Having spent countless evenings in that bar I can tell you it's an architectural impossibly, like most Toronto storefront spaces Shameful Tiki can't be more than 20 feet wide, if that, and looks nothing like the space in the show.

The storefront currently (Aug 2020) has a 'coming soon' sign for a Burger Lab location. The Avon theater is right next door -- but hasn't been an actual theater for at least 20 years. A church seen in some shots down the street is at the corner of Ottawa and Cannon streets. When I visited the location shoot they were using the church as a place for the period costume extras to congregate between takes and likely to suit up and apply makeup.

  49. S2E05 Luther goes to visit his father. As the bus pulls in there is a shot looking NW from the distinctive fountain in Gore Park (Hamilton). A couple of modern buildings are removed, and a Money Mart sign is altered to look like something more 1960s. If you are standing at this spot in the real world and turn 180 degrees you will be in front of the actual building whose facade doubled as the Academy in Season 1. Luther actually gets off the bus in front of of the 'real' Academy. A nice little bit of real world 360 degree scene continuity you don't see all that often in these days of 'everything CGI'.

  53. The scene where Leonard gets beat up causing Vanya to use her powers (and Allison visits the location later), was filmed in front a of restaurant on Hwy 9 near Palgrave, Ontario (north of Bolton). I actually saw it being filmed coincidentally... didn't know at the time until I saw it last night lol!

  55. Curious to the tie in with the Argyle Public Library. Is the reference to Argyle, Texas where I grew up?

  56. I'm pretty sure that some of the hallway scenes in season one (sorry, that's a bit vague) were filmed in the old part of Central Tech High School, at Bathurst and Bloor, in Toronto. I've seen those yellow brick halls appear in a few movies and tv shows. Beautiful old building.

  59. There are a lot of comments here to read them all right now, so not sure if it was already mentioned that in season 3, the park where Luther is jogging before being abducted by the Sparrow Academy is Gage Park in Hamilton.

  60. Please update cast info at the end of the article with Elliot Page's name. Dead naming is a common mistake but is still transphobic and harmful to all who go through the challenges and stigmatization associated with living as their authentic selves. Considering how well The Umbrella Academy has represented transitioning, this would bring your post in line with the show's portrayal, honoring who Elliot and Viktor are. Thank you.

  61. The pizzeria where they fight at the beginning of S3E01 is Shorty’s Pizza on Cannon Street in Hamilton.

The drive-in is actually the Starlite Drive-In, located in Hamilton, Ontario. Right by my house!

    1. I was going to say it's the Starlite as well because it's one of the only "old-school" drive-ins left in Southern Ontario and it's in proximity to the Devil's Punchbowl area of the Stoney Creek/Hamilton mountain which is another very popular area with location scouts. These areas of Hamilton represent a good value for budget-conscious productions as you literally get a two-fer (or even a three-fer) for varied locations without having to relocate.

    2. Sorry guys, but it's not Starlite, is 5 Drive-In. Just compare the screenshots with Google Maps.

  63. My daughter picked up on the interior of Hotel Oblivion being the same as the one on season 5 of American Horror Story. Can anyone confirm?

    1. it isn't because it was built just for season three on the stage in west end Toronto. As a matter of fact , it was built using the same studio where Morty's TV Shop was built. The designer of the hotel utilized the upstairs platform of the TV shop ( the apartment) to create the mezzanine of the hotel.

  64. Are the interior shots of the house the same house as in Doctor strange?
