Where was Gunpowder Milkshake filmed? Guide to ALL the Filming Locations: The Library & the House

Posted by

After a mission goes south, professional assassin Sam is confronted by a ruthless crime syndicate to protect an 8-year-old girl. The Netflix action thriller is what happens when you mix John Wick with unicorns and lollipops.

Gunpowder Milkshake was entirely filmed in Berlin, although the movie is set in an undisclosed city. The paychecks seen in the film were issued by the fictional Berliner Kontor Bank and are in Euros.

Gunpowder Milkshake city

Karen Gillan, Martha in the Jumanji movies and Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy, stars as Sam. Overall, all the male characters appearing in the film are bad and all the female ones good.

The impressive commando of women is composed by Lena Headey (the unforgettable Cersei Lannister of Game of Thrones), Carla Gugino (the crazy mum of The Haunting of Hill House), Angela Bassett (Queen Ramonda in Black Panther), and Michelle Yeoh (Crazy Rich Asians).

Welcome to our smooth guide to the filming locations of Gunpowder Milkshake in the city of Berlin.

The diner restaurant location
We are 99% sure that the cool American-style diner is just a set built at the Studio Babelsberg in Potsdam, which is where the production was hosted.

Gunpowder Milkshake library
The board, opening accounts, guns hidden in books... the library in Gunpowder Milkshake is the equivalent of John Wick's Continental Hotel.

The exterior was filmed at the Bode Museum, located in the central Museum Island of Berlin. The interior of this magnificent palace, specialized in Byzantine art, is one of the locations where The Queen's Gambit was filmed.

The library interior hall
However, the library interior hall was also built in the studios, a controlled environment much more convenient to film a fight sequence. Some sections, like the windows, were CGI'd into the scene.

Le Bonbon Hotel
On the other hand, Le Bonbon Hotel looks real - it must be one of the spectacular WW2 survivor period houses in Berlin, but unfortunately we haven't found it yet.

Porsche in Mitte
The parking lot from where the red Porsche leaves the hotel is at Mohrenstraße and Taubenstraße in Mitte, near Gendarmenmarkt square (the famous square of the twin churches).

Gutterball Bowling
The entrance to Gutterball Bowling (and the spot where the monster gang ends up later on) was filmed at the Messedamm Underpass, located in the International Congress Center of Berlin, the ICC Berlin.

With its distinctive orange-tiled walls and pillars, this tunnel has been used to film several Hollywood blockbusters action scenes since it was first featured in 2004’s The Bourne Supremacy.

You've probably have seen this location before in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Atomic Blonde, or Captain America: Civil War.

The interior of the neon-lighted bowling club is the Bowling World Berlin in Friedrichshain, located near the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

The Rollin Roars
The shopping center where Sam exchanges Emily was filmed in the interior of the ICC Berlin.

Constructed in 1979 with a high-tech futuristic style, the ICC Berlin is contaminated by asbestos and has been closed since 2014.

With its masks, the kidnappers are paying tribute to four classic Universal Studios monsters: Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and the Wolf Man.

Art-Deco elevator Empire State Building
This exquisite Art-Deco elevator is inspired by the ones at the Empire State Building, built from 1930 to 1931. So yes, this is also a set built somewhere in Berlin.

Gunpowder Milkshake House
Nathan, played by Paul Giamatti, is Sam's connection with The Firm. He lives in a stupendous manor house with a sky blue Aston Martin waiting at the door.

This scene was filmed at the historical Villa Francke in Potsdam. Located about 20 miles southwest of the center of Berlin, the monumental mansion was built for a wealthy Berlin timber merchant between 1873 and 1874.

This 7,200-square-foot property is situated near the Park Sanssouci, the Prussian answer to Versailles. Business must be good for Nathan because, according to the Wall Street Journal, it is valued at about $5.42 million.

What was the reference to the Canadian money hidden in the book in the library?

The architecture of the Library reminds me very much of the Rotunda in Glasgow, Scotland.
