Where is Turgistan? 6 Underground Filming Locations Guide

6 underground is the story of a rich elite team of vigilantes who decided to fake their deaths, staying under the radar to fight for a better world. They will bring some freedom and democracy to the poor oppressed people living under evil dictatorship regimes like Turgistan, dropping bombs on them if necessary. Netflix put $150 million in the hands of director Michael Bay (Transformers saga) to film this action-packed comedy.

You may wonder if Turgistan is a real country. As it happens in many other productions, the filmmakers decided not to use the real name of the place that they had in mind when writing the script. The fictional country where 6 underground is set and its capital, Tyrus, is obviously inspired by the Central Asian nation of Turkmenistan, a 5.6 million inhabitants Islamic republic. Nowadays it remains one of the world's most-closed states, ruled by authoritarian leaders since the fall of the Soviet Union.

So this time the bad guys are not the Russians or the Arabs, but hey, they are close. I'm just wondering how the American F-16 fighter jets appearing in the movie got there. Also for your information, according to Wikipedia the real Turgistan was a province of the Sasanian Empire, located in present-day Pakistan.

6 underground was filmed in Italy, Hungary, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. These are some of the most relevant filming locations that we have found so far:

The car chase scene set in Florence was only partially shot in the city. This is quite obvious if you have been there, but the filmmakers didn't mind to set the location in the world-famous capital of Tuscany, to show just a few scenes later the dayglo-green Alfa Romeo driving in the also world-famous Piazza del Campo in Siena. The stunt pictured, filmed near Fonte di San Maurizio in Siena, involved two cars flying parallel to each other either side of an ancient column topped by the Sienese wolf, symbol of the city. The action continues passing through some more well-known landmarks of Florence: the arcaded Lungarno degli Archibusieri street, Piazza di Santa Maria Novella, Piazzale degli Uffizi, Piazza della Signoria, Four jumping from Brunelleschi's Dome... In this crazy collage the car goes through the courtyards and the Hall of the Five Hundred in the Palazzo Vecchio (the city hall), something technically impossible as the room is on the first floor. They come out in the Medici's Pitti Palace (actually located half a mile away at the other side of the river Arno), where the car almost hits Michelangelo's masterpiece David, that in real life is exposed in the Accademia Gallery.

In the middle of the Florence's locations, there are inserted a few sequences filmed in Siena. Four finds out that there are so many vias in Italy, waiting for his friends near the magnificient Duomo di Siena. Then it comes the Piazza del Campo shoot. The scene of the wedding celebration was filmed in Piazza Provenzano (image below).

Ni Hai Tower Hong Kong
Ibc.org reported that the scenes taking place in the Ni Hai Tower in Hong Kong were entirely filmed in Rome. The apartment was built in detail in a set at Cinecittà Studios. The under construction skyscraper was shot at the abandoned Vela di Calatrava - Città dello Sport (Sports City). Also the opening car chase scene ends here, in the basement of the structure. This complex had to be part of a large campus of the University of Rome in Tor Vergata, in the outskirts of the city. The building was another fail of Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The megaproject, nicknamed 'cathedral in the desert', couldn't be finished due to lack of funds and political mayhem after the 2018 financial crisis broke out. According to Italian agency AGI, the Kismet is a 95-metre-long mega yacht, worth 65 million dollars. There are two short shots of the riots, when the president is running away with the black 4WD, where you can read a sign in Italian 'Guardia Costera' (coast guard). 1. The car chase in Hong Kong was filming City of Light in Abu Dhabi. If you use Google map and check it with IMDB, you will get the same scenery from the scene in HK.

  2. That feeling when you are native of Turgistan:) A lot of similarities, ppl speak turkmen, "Rovach" dictator's name in the movie in reality is president horse's name, in tribute to whom he writes and sings songs(yeah things are that bad) - nice trolling by Netflix. The major discrepancy that leaves a viewer discontent is that Rovach is portrayed as an evil genius and art lover, Rovach in reality is just a dumb, senile crooked autocrat, as it often happens reality is much uglier than the movie, but thanks Netflix to raising it up!
