Where was The Last of Us filmed? Guide to all the Filming Locations

Posted by

The highly-anticipated HBO show is an adaptation from the popular video game series of the same name where Joel, a smuggler and survivor of the brain infection that has devastated mankind, is tasked with escorting teenager Ellie.

Set twenty years after modern civilization collapsed, during the series, Joel and Ellie traverse the post-apocalyptic United States. However, The Last of Us was filmed all over Alberta in Canada.

Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal

Written and executive produced by Craig Mazin (the creator of Chernobyl), this survivor adventure stars The Mandalorian actor Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones Lyanna Mormont).

The show, which feels like an improved version of The Walking Dead, is reportedly one of the most expensive series ever made, costing HBO about $10 million per episode.

Here is our (almost) spoiler-free guide to all the filming locations of The Last of Us in order of appearance.

The Last of Us Locations

The Last of Us house
The Miller's house in 2003 from the first episode, "When You're Lost in the Darkness", is located in a quiet cul-de-sac at 11 Sullivan Road Southwest in High River.

The Adler's home is also located next door, and both the exterior and interior scenes were filmed on location in this town situated about 42 miles south of Calgary.

Sarah's school was filmed at Lord Shaughnessy High School in Calgary.

Was the Jakarta part in Episode II actually filmed in Jakarta or elsewhere in Indonesia? It seems very authentic.

Believe it or not, it was also filmed in Calgary!

"The interior was a set built at the studios," you say, but which studios?

The road that Joel and Ellie are walking along and then go to the gas station, towards the beginning of the episode, was filmed in the hamlet of Priddis, at the Priddis General Store. I live down the road, so I saw the transformation of the store. Was very cool.

The "museum" is right next door to my office. We watched that scene being shot. Several days for two minutes. No wonder these productions are so expensive.

Yo All-- Having lived in Boston and Turner Valley, Alberta (near Sheep River falls), I can assure you that there is NOTHING anywhere near Boston that resembles this part of Alberta. Give me a break guys (and gals)!!!

Thanks for doing this! When it said, “10 miles outside Boston”, I immediately said it looked not at all like Massachusetts but did look like Alberta- I was surprised I was right, haven’t been in decades.

Curious about the last scene in Episode 5, the Ranchland Motel, the black horse sign, and the broken UFA sign. Location? Thought it might be HWY 16A.

I think you mean Cumberland Farms, not Cucumber Farms.

13- Anonymous - Feb 20, 2023, 12:23 PM
And I swear I thought I recognized the closing scene of Ep 6. It looked like the area in Calgary over by Heritage Park, looking back towards the reservoir over the RR tracks. If I'm correct, the bike trail crosses the track right to left from the direction of downtown, then cuts back left to go around the reservoir once you are across the tracks. Am I right?

Episode 6, 15min:33 sec, where Joel and Elle are ambushed, features Mt Yamnuska (aka Mt John Laurie) in the background.

Approaching the town gates, 17min:55sec, features the mountains above Canmore, Mt Lawrence Grassi. Ha Ling Peak. East End of Mt Rundle. It looks to be filmed somewhere near Bow Flats.

15- Mark Perkins - Feb 26, 2023, 9:42 PM
In episode 7, which was filmed in Northland Mall, the food court featured at 39:42 sec. includes the old Subway and A&W. You can see the checkerboard tiles on the pillars.

16- Kurt - Feb 27, 2023, 10:31 AM
The image in the blog showing two floors in the mall: Northland Village only has one floor! I assume they used VFX to create the lower floor seen in the screenshot above.

17- Mark Perkins - Mar 15, 2023, 7:39 AM
38:27 sec in episode 9 when the pair drive past a sign that says they are entering 'Wyoming'. The backdrop is Fortress Mountain. Filmed from Highway 40/Kananaskis Trail. Right outside the Wedge Pond parking lot.

“The body shop” in the mall was what tipped me off about being filmed in Canada.
