Where was The Last of Us filmed? Guide to all the Filming Locations

Posted by

The highly-anticipated HBO show is an adaptation from the popular video game series of the same name where Joel, a smuggler and survivor of the brain infection that has devastated mankind, is tasked with escorting teenager Ellie.

Set twenty years after modern civilization collapsed, during the series, Joel and Ellie traverse the post-apocalyptic United States. However, The Last of Us was filmed all over Alberta in Canada.

Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal

Written and executive produced by Craig Mazin (the creator of Chernobyl), this survivor adventure stars The Mandalorian actor Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones Lyanna Mormont).

The show, which feels like an improved version of The Walking Dead, is reportedly one of the most expensive series ever made, costing HBO about $10 million per episode.

Here is our guide to all the filming locations of The Last of Us in order of appearance. We will be updating and expanding this spoiler-free report every week as new locations are revealed.

The Last of Us Locations

The Last of Us house
The Miller's house in 2003 from the first episode, "When You're Lost in the Darkness", is located in a quiet cul-de-sac at 11 Sullivan Road Southwest in High River.

The Adler's home is also located next door, and both the exterior and interior scenes were filmed on location in this town situated about 42 miles south of Calgary.

Sarah's school was filmed at Lord Shaughnessy High School in Calgary.

The Last of Us Austin
Several scenes taking place in Downtown Austin were filmed in Fort Macleod, Alberta.

An old antique store on 2nd Avenue, next to Don's Barber Shop, served as the watch repair store.

As you can see, some buildings were CGI'd into the background of the scene.

When You're Lost in the Darkness

The Last of Us city
The sequence where Tommy and Joel flee with Sarah and several airplanes fly over them was filmed on 23rd Street (Highway 2), also in Fort Macleod.

Then, they turn right down an alleyway, zig-zag just next to the watch repair store, and continue along 2nd Avenue.

Fort MacLeod has a remarkable concentration of historic buildings, perfect for filming. Kevin Costner's 2020 film Let Him Go and the award-winning 2005 movie Brokeback Mountain also recorded scenes in this beautiful town.

Midnight Madness
Then, the pickup truck turns right again, onto 24th Street, where the fake cinema projecting a movie called Midnight Madness is located.

The Empress Theatre was renamed Monarch for the plane crash shot.

This is almost the same route that the Ectomobile took through the streets of Fort Macleod in the 2021 movie Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Car knocked upside down
The sequence after the car is knocked upside down was filmed in another town situated more than 160 miles (260 km) from there, in central Alberta.

After being ravaged by a flood in 2013, the entire population of 13,000 people had to flee. Later on, the houses were removed, and the area was returned to its natural state.

Many elements in the image pictured, including the church and the city in the background, were created via CGI.

The road that Joel and Ellie are walking along and then go to the gas station, towards the beginning of the episode, was filmed in the hamlet of Priddis, at the Priddis General Store. I live down the road, so I saw the transformation of the store. Was very cool.

The "museum" is right next door to my office. We watched that scene being shot. Several days for two minutes. No wonder these productions are so expensive.
