Where was War Machine filmed? Filming Locations in Australia and New Zealand
Posted by Ra Moon
Inspired by '80s robot action akin to mecha designs from anime like Robotech or Gundam, War Machine was filmed in Australia and New Zealand.

Alan Ritchson (from the Reacher series) stars as "81," a combat engineer and U.S. Army Ranger recruit who is sent on a mission facing an unknown threat after intense training exercises.
Here is our spoiler-free guide to all the filming locations of War Machine. You'll find the locations in order of their first appearance.

The War Machine Locations

The 75th Ranger Regiment training base in Colorado was filmed at RAAF Base Williams in Laverton, near Melbourne, Victoria.
The scene pictured is the Radschool building and parade ground.

The training scenes at base camp and the obstacle course were filmed at The Pines Scout Camp in Altona.
Altona is a bayside suburb in Melbourne’s southwest, about 13 km (8 miles) from the CBD (Central Business District).

As VicScreen reported, filming took place around the towns of Bright and Myrtleford, in Victoria's High Country.
According to one of our readers, the scenes training on orange dirt roads and pine forests were filmed in the area of Porepunkah, just north of Bright.

Between Bright and Myrtleford is Mount Buffalo National Park, featuring a dramatic plateau with hiking trails and granite cliffs dropping up to 300 m in places, ideal for scenic views and rock climbing (or rappelling, in this case).

The zipline scene was filmed at the Kawarau River by the Lower Roaring Meg Power Station, a historic hydroelectric scheme in New Zealand's Kawarau Gorge near Queenstown and Cromwell (South Island).
Excess water not needed for power generation spills naturally from the station back into the Roaring Meg Stream, creating a man-made waterfall effect that was CGI-enhanced in the movie to look like a pair of natural waterfalls.

The original source that reported filming at the Chinese Dog Leg, a famous 400-meter-long rapid in the Kawarau River, was the local outlet Otago Daily Times.
Filming also took place in a stream between Kingston and Fairlight, located south of Queenstown.

In this scene, The Remarkables appear in the background, a mountain range in Queenstown that is not the sworn rival of the Expendables, but rather the iconic range that towers over the so-called adventure capital of New Zealand.

The studio work was done at Docklands Studios Melbourne, Australia's largest film and TV production hub, with six sound stages (up to 3,700 m², some with water tanks).
Opened in 2004 as a state-private venture, it has hosted productions such as Ghost Rider, several Netflix series, and the 2024 movie Better Man.
Additional locations in Victoria include Somers, Hoddles Creek, Yarra Bend Park, Avalon, Warburton, Mount Dandenong, Warrnambool and Portland.

Porepunkah (near Bright) hills were some of the locations. Where you see them running on orange dirt roads in pine forests in the training scenes, etc.
