Barkley Cove, NC: Where was Where the Crawdads Sing filmed? All the Locations

Posted by

Based on the Delia Owen bestselling novel, this mystery thriller is set in 1969 in the fictional fishing town of Barkley Cove, North Carolina.

However, Where the Crawdads Sing was almost entirely filmed in Louisiana, in and around New Orleans.

The Marsh Girl and Tate

Produced by New Orleans native Reese Witherspoon, the movie stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kya, the "Marsh Girl". Edgar-Jones is best known for her role in the Hulu series Normal People.

Kya is at the center of a trial for the murder of her former lover, Chase Andrews, played by Harris Dickinson (Trust, The King's Man). The main cast is completed by Taylor John Smith (Shadow in the Cloud, Sharp Objects) as Tate Walker and David Strathairn (The Sopranos, Nightmare Alley) as lawyer Tom Milton.

Welcome to Barkley Cove and our spoiler-free guide to all the filming locations of Where the Crawdads Sing.

Barkley Cove, NC

Barkley Cove NC
The crawdads actually sing in Louisiana. Located about 55 miles southwest of New Orleans, the picturesque streets of Houma doubled as Barkley Cove.

This area bordered by the Gulf of Mexico, known as the Bayou Country, is surrounded by vast wetlands and bayous, the local term for "swamp".

Barkley County
The local press reported that the production took over Houma's Historic District, filming on Main Street between Lafayette and Belanger Streets.

Several scenes were recorded outside La Boujee Boutique, transformed into a hardware store, and many storefronts were modified to look like in the 60s.

Jumpin's Bait and Gas
An Abandoned Louisiana Facebook group member posted that the Jumpin's Bait and Gas store set was located at Bayou Liberty near Slidell.

Maybe Kya's lovely home was also located nearby. In any case, this beautiful set was dismantled once filming was complete.

This is on private land. If you are visiting, please be considerate to the owners of the property and do not trespass.

St Bernard Parish Courthouse
The trial for Chase's murder takes place at St. Bernard Parish Court House in Chalmette, near New Orleans.

Built in 1914 with an Art-Deco facade, this elegant hall, which served as a location for the 2016 movie Free State of Jones, can also be rented for weddings and events.

Otis House in the marshes
The tax man's office was filmed at the Otis House, a museum now temporarily closed at Fairview-Riverside State Park.

This 1880s Queen Anne–style house was left to the State of Louisiana after the last private owner passed away in 1962.

Where the Crawdads Sing location
There are some spectacular ancient oak trees on the grounds of the Otis House, so we reckon that the feather's tree scenes were also recorded here.

Der Gesang der Flusskrebse drehorte
The church at the end of the movie is the Magnolia Baptist Church, located on a narrow road near the entrance to Fairview State Park, between Madisonville and Mandeville.

This wooden structure was built in the early 1900s for a now-defunct community called Houltonville.

The shells of the Carolina marsh
Most of Kya's artwork was actually designed by Alice Ravenel Huger Smith (1876 - 1958), a painter from Charleston, South Carolina, who immortalized the beauty of the Lowcountry.

Some of her works can be seen at The Johnson Collection in Spartanburg.

As someone from NC, the scenery instantly threw me off. It looks NOTHING like NC.
