Where was The Sandman filmed? The House & ALL the Locations

Posted by

Revolving around the story of Lord Morpheus, an entity older than the gods, the Netflix series dives into a creative and complex universe, featuring interesting locations and sets.

The Sandman was primarily filmed within an hour of Shepperton Studios near London during the lockdown.

Tom Sturridge as Lord Morpheus

This fantasy series is based on the beloved 75-volume comic book written by Neil Gaiman, the creator of great works including American Gods and Good Omens.

Tom Sturridge plays the personification of all dreams, Morpheus, Dream of the Endless. The spectacular cast includes Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Kyo Ra as Rose Walker, The Vortex, and Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, the ruler of hell.

Welcome to our spoiler-free guide to the filming locations of The Sandman, sorted into chronological order.

The Sandman Locations

The Sandman Dream's Palace
In the series introduction, we see the first version of the Dream's Palace, with a couple of gigantic hands holding up the entrance bridge.

This structure is inspired by the colossal Golden Bridge near Da Nang in Vietnam, which opened in 2018.

When the raven Jessamy enters the palace, she flies over the great hall of the Natural History Museum in London.

Lucien's Library
The next room that appears is Lucien's Library, filmed at the Victorian Lincoln’s Inn Library in London.

The production crew removed all the modern furniture, photocopiers, and computers to transform this beautiful space for the series.

Where was The Sandman filmed
The interior hall with the staircase and the three changing stained glass windows is Guildford Cathedral in Surrey, with plenty of CGI thrown in.

The shoot inside this Neo-Gothic/Art Deco temple, built between 1936 and 1961, lasted two weeks.

The Sandman House

The Sandman house
Atlas of Wonders has tracked down the location of the Fawney Rig manor, in the series located in Wych Cross, East Sussex.

Sir Roderick Burgess' mansion is the Jacobean style Joyce Grove country house built in 1908 at Nettlebed in Henley-On-Thames, Oxfordshire.

The magnificent wooden interior rooms were also filmed here. This house was featured in the 2014 movie The Imitation Game and in the HBO series The Nevers.

Lord Morpheus Undercroft
However, as the behind-the-scenes video reveals, the Undercroft where Lord Morpheus was imprisoned was a detailed set built at Shepperton Studios, located outside London.

The house of mysteries
Both the exterior and interior of Unity Kinkaid’s townhouse in 1916 were filmed in a house in the Lincoln’s Inn complex on New Square, London.

According to Film London, the Marlens Hospital entrance in 1926 was also shot here.

The Sandman filming location
Cain and Abel's House of Mystery located next door to the House of Secrets in episode two, "Imperfect Hosts", is the picturesque "Old" Scotney Castle near Lamberhurst in Kent.

These are the ruins of a medieval manor with a 19th-century Tudor Revival house on an island on a small lake.

As you can see, the house on the left was CGI'd into the scene.

Infernos Nightclub Clapham
The scene in a pub from episode three, "Dream a Little Dream of Me", with occult detective Johanna Constantine (played by Jenna Coleman), was recorded in the famous Infernos Nightclub in Clapham, London. The ideal place for summoning demons.

Exorcism church
Back in the real world, Constantine conducts an exorcism at the princess’ wedding.

The exterior was filmed on the steps leading up to the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London.

The sequence pictured was filmed in the impressive 18th-century Painted Hall, also in Greenwich.

Royal Empire Hotel
The scene where the ruler of the Dreaming talks to the raven Matthew (pictured in the first image of this report, on top), was filmed at Jubilee Park in Canary Wharf, London.

Also, in episode five, "24/7", there's a scene with a burning car filmed opposite the East Wintergarden event venue in Jubilee Park.

The scenes in Buffalo, New York, with John Dee (David Thewlis) and The Corinthian, pictured, were also filmed here in Canary Wharf.

A Hope in Hell
As the Surrey Live reports, the set of the Hell with tall black crosses from episode four, "A Hope in Hell", was built at Hankley Common near Farnham in Surrey.

This nature reserve has been used in several James Bond movies including Skyfall, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, and period films like 1917 and Macbeth.

Lucifer Morningstar temple
Lucifer Morningstar's hall was a practical set built at the studios.

We spotted a couple of interesting inspirations for this set: the painting on the left is one of the outstanding Roman frescos at the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii, southern Italy.

The design of the burning braziers also comes from the ancient city buried under volcanic ash. The art department just removed a small detail from the tripod with satyrs, kept in the Secret Cabinet at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.

Royal Empire Hotel Georgia
Chapter six, "The Sound of Her Wings", opens with a scene filmed at Richmond Green, on the corner of Pembroke Villas and The Green in London.

Sunless Lands
Although it seems that Morpheus and his sister, Death (played by Kirby Howell-Baptiste), don't go too far, as in the next scene they are on the Lower Mall promenade along the River Thames in Hammersmith.

The beautiful house of the violinist is on the corner of Lower Mall and Digby Mansions, with splendid vistas of Hammersmith Bridge.

Dream and Death
The wooden bridge, pictured, is located over the Jubilee River near Dorney in Buckinghamshire.

Later on, the siblings are back in Richmond, strolling through Old Palace Lane. The Nagler Hospice is a house on The Green Street.

The addict's tent is by the railway arches at Richmond Bridge.

The Sandman pub
The facade of the White House Tavern is the interior courtyard of the Dorney Court, an almost 600-year-old Tudor manor in Buckinghamshire.

Many movies and series have been filmed here, including Bridgerton and Taboo.

White House Tavern The Sandman
Looking at the skyscrapers in 1989, the tavern had to be opposite Canary Wharf, near The O2 and the Magazine London event space.

The New Inn
The New Inn in the present year is actually The New Inn Ham Common on Petersham road in Richmond.

Sandman drehorte haus
In chapter seven, "The Doll's House", Rose and her friend Lyta Hall travel to Sussex, England, to meet Unity Kincaid.

Unity's care home for the elderly is the Scotney 'New' Castle, near the location that in episode two served as Cain and Abel's house.

Hal Carter B and B
Hal's Bed and Breakfast is the Canadian Pavilion, also known as the Macdonald Stewart Pavilion, in Bisley Camp, Surrey.

Unfortunately, we don't have a better image of this historical club, built in 1897, but the tower on the left in real life is the same height as the one on the right.

Sandman childhood home
Rose and Jed’s childhood home from episode eight, "Playing House", is located on Avalon Street in Lilliput, Poole.

Hector dream house
Hector's dream house is real: The Greenways house is located in Coombe Park, a private gated estate in south-west London.

Designed by RIBA-award winning architect Nick Eldridge, the swimming pool is geometrically tied to the curved walls of the house, although like the background, it was modified via CGI.

The Sandman beach
The beach in Cape Kennedy, Florida, is Sandbanks Beach in Poole, Dorset.

This gorgeous spot is considered one of Britain's best beaches.

Royal Empire Hotel Georgia cereal convention
Also, in the same episode, when Rose visits other people's dreams, there is a scene with Chantal (or Zelda?) filmed at Lincoln's Inn Upper Vestibule.

When Rose goes out on the street and meets Barbie and Ken with their orange Lamborghini she's at Lincoln's Inn Fields.

Brookwood Cemetery Surrey
The graveyard with the mausoleum is the Victorian-era Brookwood Cemetery or London Necropolis in Surrey.

Opened in the mid-19th century, this is the largest cemetery in England.

Absolutely stunning images of houses around Great Britain. A real treat, The violinist's house was outstanding. The program itself is excellent, plenty of food for thought. X

The actual building used for the White Horse Tavern seems to be Dorney Court in Windsor - pictures from the back of Dorney Court match the pub as it appears in the 1989 scene in the show.

So happy to have found this article! Was really getting upset by the massive amount of 'articles' out there providing absolute zero information on film locations, a huge amount of ads, and just the same one line about Shepperton Studios copy pasted from each other. Yours is a concise, informative, fun read, great pictures, and the added maps to locations are a delight. Exactly what I was looking for and more! Thank you!!!

My humble contribution is that The New Inn in episode 6 is actually The New Inn Ham Common on Petersham road in Richmond. On Google Maps, you can see in one of the patron's photos that the sign inside the entrance still has the same wifi code as seen on screen!

The only change is that their real-life Twitter account is @thenewinnham, whereas in the episode it reads @thenewinntown (which someone made a joke account for!).

I was wondering if the White Horse Tavern is completely CGI and studio work, or has some outdoor stuff based in a real location? And the stunning landscape surrounding Lyta's dream house, does anyone have any information on that?

Thanks a lot, You just made my day!-) As you can see, we found the tavern, but not Lyta's modern round house.

Yes, it's written under the Vietnam bridge image.

Great detailed article. Also worth adding is the Constantine / Dream first interaction on the steps leading up to the Greenwich Royal Naval College.

Would you happen to know where the cereal convention was held?

Hal’s bed and breakfast isn’t near Sandbanks, it was filmed at the Canadian Pavilion in Bisley, Surrey with some CGI added. The Sheraton Skyline Hotel in Heathrow was used for the convention scenes. The hotel’s pool was also used.

Brookwood Cemetery when she's traveling through people's dreams.

Episode 6: The scene where Dream and Death are crossing a wooden bridge and go on to meet Sam was filmed at the Jubilee River in Dorney, Buckinghamshire.

Where was the interior of Ethel's apartment in Brooklyn filmed? I keep thinking it looks like Lux from the Lucifer series.

Lots of Richmond-upon-Thames in this episode. The benches and park are Richmond Green, Dream and Death wander past The White Swan in Old Palace Lane, the addict's tent is by the railway arches at Richmond Bridge (there are often homeless people's tents here for real), and the little lane with the school children looks like Paved Court.

Rose and Jed’s childhood home is 5 Avalon, Lilliput, Poole, close to the filming locations on Sandbanks beach.

For a more precise location for the parts on Sandbanks Beach: during the scene where Hal and The Corinthian talk, briefly the focus changes to the background behind The Corinthian. The distinctive white building with lots of small curved roofs and porthole windows is the fancy Storm development. The actual address is on the non-beachfront side at 85 Banks Road, Poole.

From there and working south down the beach, behind Hal is a low building with a brown roof which is the beach volleyball club and crazy golf. From the Banks Road side, you can see the open section of pillars in this building where Rose speaks to Matthew.

16- Hector - Sep 10, 2022, 6:52 PM
Hector's dream house is in south London. It's called the Greenway house.

Great article. It was sad to find out the dream house is in a CGI background. The landscape was what I was trying to find.

A very small one, but the road names near Richmond are "Green" rather than "Grn". I assume this was taken from Google Maps, which abbreviates road names in ways we usually wouldn't do in the UK.

Ethel’s flat interior was built on set on a stage in Shepperton.

20- Anonymous - Nov 21, 2022, 7:22 PM
Just wanted to add that the courts of Lucifer’s home look exactly like St. Peter’s basilica. You can find an aerial view on Google.

Great article. I have but one correction: Jessamy is a female raven. When talking about her flight through the Dreaming, you used a male pronoun ("he"). Just a little nitpick.
