Posted by

The Hallmark Channel romantic comedy Hearts Down Under was primarily filmed in Queensland, Australia. The movie is set in the fictional town of Lemon Myrtle Cove. The movie, originally titled Romance on the Menu, was released to Netflix Australia in September 2020.

The story follows New York chef Caroline Wilson who inherits The Seagull, a small café in a lovely sun-kissed Australian village.

Despite the Vegemite sandwiches, she goes to a land down under, determined to renovate the restaurant to sell. However, when she starts to fall in love with the location, its people, and in particular, a charming local cook, Caroline will have to face a life-changing decision.

Caroline is played by Canadian actress Cindy Busby. She recently starred in another Hallmark movie, Chasing Waterfalls, although she is best known for her role as Ashley Stanton on the Heartland series.

Australian actor Tim Ross (Wonderland, Neighbours) plays Simon Cook. The main cast is completed by Naomi Sequeira as Beth, Peter Bensley as Dale Whitely, and Marita Wilcox as Marla.

Welcome to Brissy and our guide to the filming locations of Hearts Down Under, aka Romance on the Menu:

Hearts Down Under restaurant
Caroline's up-market restaurant in Tribeca, New York, was also filmed in Australia.

The Laboratoire was set in a now permanently closed minimalist restaurant called Corella. It was located under The Drapery building in the Brisbane neighborhood of Woolloongabba, as the Daily Mail Australia reported.

The real town of Lemon Myrtle Cove

Lemon Myrtle Cove
The fictional town of Lemon Myrtle Cove was filmed at various locations in the city of Brisbane coastal suburbs of Shorncliffe and Sandgate.

This establishing shot is featuring the Lovers Walk and Arthur Davis Park in Sandgate. The house and the restaurant of the Netflix series Tidelands were also filmed here in this beautiful area.

The Seagull Café
According to IMDb, Aunt Doreen's café, The Seagull, was filmed in Shorncliffe.

However, the restaurant is actually located (thanks a lot, Susan) at the now closed The Hamptons café at 49 Gerler Rd in the quiet suburb of Hendra, Brisbane.

Hearts Down Under house
On the other hand, Atlas of Wonders has tracked down the location of Caroline's new home. The colorful house is located at 55 Swan Street in Shorncliffe.

Shorncliffe is a gorgeous neighborhood, featuring many heritage-listed sites built between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.

The historical buildings include the railway station, the Musgrave sanatorium, and a lot of houses which you can find especially in Park Parade, Allpass Parade, and Friday Street.

Shorncliffe pier
The pier where Simon and Caroline go fishing and have dinner with their friends is also a historical site. The Shorncliffe pier is one of the longest recreational piers in Australia.

The original pier, with its white faded timber railings, opened in 1884. However, due to the damage done by marine borers (a mollusk that sticks to wood), the old pier had to be demolished and replaced with a new one, designed almost identical to the former structure.

Since the reopening in 2016, the pier is again a perfect spot for taking photos in the sunrise.

The film, even if it is not a masterpiece, is enjoyable, the actors are good and the place is fantastic.

Hi! I just watched this movie and I'm a Brisbane local. It's a good little piece of fluff to watch.

Regarding the location of the dinner with friends - it looks like that was actually filmed at Baxter's Jetty in Shorncliffe. It's much shorter than the Shorncliffe Pier.
