Where is Mare of Easttown filmed? Guide to ALL the Filming Locations

Posted by

Mare of Easttown was filmed in the southwestern area of Philadelphia, in Chester County and Delaware County.

Kate Winslet portrays the titular Mare Sheehan, a small-town detective investigating a Twin Peaks-style murder set in the fictional town of Easttown, Pennsylvania.

The cast with Kate Winslet

Series creator Brad Ingelsby said in a production video that Easttown is a mix of several places in Pennsylvania where he grew up.

The filmmakers wanted to make sure that the feeling of the town and the vibe of the show was specific in many different ways, trying to pick locations that were true to its atmosphere and not just the most picturesque.

Welcome to Delco and to the most complete guide to the Mare of Easttown filming locations that you can find.

Where was Mare of Easttown filmed?

Miss Lady Hawk Herself
In the first episode, Mare is visiting Mrs. Carroll’s (played by Phyllis Somerville), to investigate a Peeping Tom that her granddaughter saw in the backyard.

These scenes (and the ones taking place here in the next episodes) were filmed at Village on Plaza Street in Marcus Hook, on Maple Street and Cedar Street.

The pet store scene was filmed at Aquarium World in Boothwyn.

Erin McMenamin house
The McMenamin house is located at 1839 S Creek Road in Chadds Ford (Delaware County).

According to Realtor, this approximately 4,166 square feet, six-bedroom and three-bathroom home was built in 1920. The house is currently off the market but has an estimated value of $632,800.

It seems to be enough to cover for the surgery to treat Erin's baby's ear, isn’t it? This is a private residence, please be considerate to the owners of the property.

Easttown police station
Easttown's police station is the old train station on Fleetwood Street in Coatesville, PA.

The series opens with several establishing shots of the streets of this town and its scenic Fairview Cemetery.

Mare of Easttown house
Mare's house is located in Wallingford. Wallingford is a nice community in Delaware County, located about 9 miles from Philadelphia proper. Her ex-husband's home (Frank Sheehan, played by David Denman) is actually located to the rear of Mare's house.

These residences are privately owned and we ask you to respect their privacy. The unexpected success of the series has caused an interest in the houses that is very unwelcome for the owners.

Delaware County is colloquially referred to as Delco. According to director Craig Zobel, Kate Winslet was the only actor confident enough to go back to her native English accent in between takes. For the cast and crew, witnessing Winslet immediately switch from a Delco accent to her normal accent was an astonishing sight.

Erin McMenamin Building in Coatesville
The apartment building where Erin's friend, Jess (played by Ruby Cruz), lives is also located in Coatesville, at 338 E Diamond Street.

Easttown High School
There were recorded two gym scenes. The one of the video of Mare scoring a shot, and celebrating the state championship in the present.

One was filmed at Coatesville Intermediate School, the other one at the old South Brandywine Middle School.

Located at 600 Doe Run Road in Brandywine near Coatesville, South Brandywine Middle School is permanently closed since 2019.

American Legion Ogden
The exterior of the bar where Mare meets Richard Ryan (Guy Pearce) is the American Legion at 2630 Ogden Avenue in Ogden. However, one of our readers recognized the interior, shot at the Star Hotel bar in Marcus Hook.

In episode 3, the exterior of the bar where Mare and Colin are drinking is also the American Legion, but the interior is the Sundance Saloon in Aston.

Mare of Easttown is the second HBO series that stars both Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce after Mildred Pierce. Both won Emmy Awards for their roles in the 2011 miniseries.

Easttown viaduct Creedham creek
Local news website Patch.com reported that film crews with 'Easttown Township Police' vehicles were spotted along Forbidden drive at Wissahickon Valley Park near Roxborough.

Also, thanks to a local neighbor, we can confirm the exact location where the scenes taking place under the viaduct, in the Sharp's Woods and Creedham Creek, were filmed.

The spot is situated below Henry Avenue near the Gorgas Lane entrance of Wissahickon Valley Park.

Easttown church
The church is the historic St Michael's Evangelical Lutheran at 6671 Germantown Avenue in Northwest Philadelphia.

The temple remained active for over 288 years until it closed in 2016.

As in the series, Father Dan Hastings and Deacon Mark Burton's home (played by Neal Huff and James McArdle respectively) is a house located on the grounds of the church.

Mare of Easttown drehorte
According to a member of the film crew, the interior of Richard's book signing venue was filmed in two different locations. Mare's footage was recorded at Philadelphia Cricket Club.

As Richard's role was recast, his side of the scene was shot in the same building as the exterior: Girard College in Philadelphia. The restaurant from episode 3 was also filmed at Girard College, in the basement of Founder's Hall.

The courthouse from the finale episode is also Founder's Hall at Girard College, built between 1833 and 1847 in the Greek revival style.

Petrol station in Phoenixville
The gas station of the second episode, "Fathers", is located at 508 Bridge Street in Phoenixville.

A local resident told us that shortly after production concluded, a realtor transformed the former gas station into their office.

Pastorius Park Philadelphia
The Brandywine Park that first appears in the third episode, "Enter Number Two", was filmed at Pastorius Park in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood in Philadelphia.

This is the same park where Lori and Mare talk while sitting on a bench in the fourth episode.

Brandywine Creek bridge
The bridge where one of the characters throws the bike is located over Brandywine Creek on Pennsylvania old Route 100 near Chadds Ford.

Church in Linwood
In episode four, "Poor Sisyphus", there is an establishing shot of the Holy Saviour Church in Linwood.

Poor Sisyphus
The scene with Colin and Mark Burton was filmed at Marcus Hook Pharmacy at 46 East 10th Street.

Spar Hill Farm Kennett
The abandoned barn scene with Dawn Bailey (played by Enid Graham) was filmed at the Spar Hill Farm in Kennett Township, near the border with Delaware.

This 103-acre estate abuts the Lord Howe property and is now a public recreation area with trail networks.

Bennie’s Tavern
The pub where the girls are being held captive, Bennie’s Tavern, is the old Christy's Bar and Grille at 169 E Ridge Road in Linwood.

The location is a real bar in the front with a house in the back.

Dylan house
Dylan Hinchey's home (played by Jack Mulhern) is located near the Schuylkill River and the railroad viaduct at Jacob Street in the village of Mont Clare.

During the blackout at the beginning of episode five, "Illusions", there is an establishing shot filmed at Bogart's Bar and Grill in Boothwyn.
Image courtesy of HBO - Maps: House / Bar

Easttown Middle School
The establishing shot of the Easttown Middle School is the Tinicum Elementary School at 91 Seneca Street in Essington.

The interior in the cafeteria was filmed at South Brandywine Middle School in East Fallowfield (the same location as one of the gym scenes).

However, the exterior scene with Lori picking up her son was filmed at Gordon Educational Center in Coatesville.

New English Style Pizza
The pizzeria scene and the alley where Deacon Mark is beaten were filmed at New English Style Pizza in Marcus Hook.

Mare and Colin's date restaurant (the one with the wild goat) was built on a soundstage. The series was headquartered at SunCenter Studios in Aston.

Philly Diner Essington
The blue, 1950s-style restaurant is the Philly Diner at 51 Industrial Highway in Essington.

The cast also includes Evan Peters as Detective Colin Zabel, Guy Pearce as professor Richard Ryan, Julianne Nicholson as Lori Ross (Mare's childhood best friend), Angourie Rice as Siobhan (Mare's teenage daughter), and Jean Smart as Helen (Mare's mother).

The gym scenes were filmed at Coatesville High School at 1445 Lincoln Highway in Coatesville. None of the Hawks stuff was on the wall, that was all added in post.

Yes, the book club scene is filmed in the interior of the Philadelphia cricket club. The exterior I have no idea what it is but the interior is 100% the Philly cricket club.

I think the church is Saint John Vianney in Gladwyne.

The gym scene could not be Coatesville High School unless they cut the size of the bleachers in half, added windows, and changed the hardwood floors and all of the colors from red and black to blue. It looks to me like it is Villa Maria's gym in Malvern.

St. Mary’s Church Lake Ariel PA.

I was in the gym scene, is south Brandywine middle school located in Coatesville.

9- Anonymous - April 30, 2021 at 2:38 PM
Why would you think the gym scene is Coatesville? You can drive by South Brandywine school today and see Easttown still on the gym windows.

The outside of the bar in the first episode may be the VFW in Ogden, but the inside is definitely the Star Bar in Marcus Hook.

Does anyone know where the restaurant in episode 3 (where Mare and Richard went on their date) is located?

That church is St. Albans in Roxborough.

Can’t say for certain, but the scene with Richard and Mare in the third episode in the restaurant kinda looks like the Catacombs restaurant in Bube’s Brewery in Mount Joy.

Could the restaurant in episode three be Bube's Brewery? Google images! I had dinner there once... looks like it.

The restaurant scene in episode 3 really looks like the restaurant in the basement of the Chestnut Hill hotel.

The home where the Deacon lives (yellow building with blue trim) looks quite familiar. Does anyone have a location for this?

23- Anonymous - May 6, 2021 at 11:39 AM
As far as the Philadelphia cricket club goes, Mares footage is at the Cricket club. Richard's role was recast and his side of the scene was in the same building as the exterior. The outside of the cricket club is a building located on Girard College. The restaurant scene was also at Girard College in the catacombs. I was part of the production.

The bar Mare and her partner were drinking at is the Sundance Saloon in Aston.

A Coatesville Parent noted that part of the gym scenes was filmed at Coatesville Intermediate School without signage and the rest at South Brandywine Middle School with signage. The signage still visible if you walk by the middle school according to a resident of East Fallowfield Township. Also, Coatesville students were delayed returning to the Coatesville Intermediate School after in-person classes started because filming was still going on.

Certain scenes were filmed at the Gorgas Lane entrance of Wissahickon Valley Park in Roxborough. We actually live near there and watched the area being transformed for the filming.

The exterior shot of the church in episode 4 is Holy Saviour in Linwood.

Bennie's is 9th and Sproul Streets in Chester, not Edgemont Ave. The scene where the girl is in the van is Edgemont Ave.

Bennies Tavern is the Old Christy's at 169 E Ridge Rd, Linwood, PA 19061.

I really enjoyed your photo synopsis identifying the various locations of the various and quite detailed settings of the film. I am now able to associate those aspects of the film with my personal knowledge and history. I used to live on Corinthian Avenue which was the entrance to Girard College (Founders Hall Scene). I've walked in Pastorius Park in Chestnut Hill. I've admired the old Coatesville Train Station. Driven over the Brandywine Creek Bridge from which the bike was thrown. Picked up Hoagies at Don's Deli on Meetinghouse Road. Worked in Chester and always admired the historic buildings near the Septa/Amtrak Station... and have sadly seen the poverty a few blocks away. I was contacted by a location scout about using my House in Pocopson Township for the McMenamin Residence but lost out to the home on Creek Road. I now realize how challenging and detail-oriented that position is and I have to compliment the location scouts for their originality and ingenuity... no easy task. I'm thoroughly enjoying Mare of Easttown, not only because of the local connection to the film but the excellent storyline and most talented cast and crew. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

I believe there were several scenes shot in Smedley Park. In the scene where Erin arrives at Sharps Woods and later when the cops were looking at the body, you could see the trolley trestle at Smedley.

There were some scenes filmed in Aston - the part where Mare hurt her foot trying to jump the fence was filmed in Aston because a neighbor posted a video of them filming that scene outside her house.

45- Anonymous - May 16, 2021 at 9:00 AM
To clarify the basketball scene. There were 2. One was Mare young and at a different school that where the pics come from and there was a video of her making that shot. The other basketball scene when they celebrate Mare is a diff location and all signage was there. This is why there are conflicting reports. 2 schools to completely different scenarios.

Mare and Zabel talking down by the river was filmed outside of Talen Energy Stadium underneath the Commodore Barry Bridge in Chester, PA. Lori picking up her son from school was filmed at Tinicum Elementary school in Tinicum Township, PA.

In the fifth episode "illusions", where was the interior and exterior of Easttown Middle School filmed? Also, the scenes where Ryan is talking to his Mom confirming his Dad's secret affair. I hope the attack on Moira Ross in the school cafeteria was used as a teachable moment too. No child should be hurt like that especially going to lunch in a "safe" environment. Where was that filmed? I am seeing Gordon Middle School in Coatesville, PA for the exterior and a nearby park area across the street? The interior could be South Brandywine Middle School again? Any thoughts?

48- Anonymous - May 17, 2021 at 9:23 AM
FYI Sharp's Woods is not a fictional place, or at least there is a Sharp's Woods in Chester County, near the Upper Main Line YMCA.

49- Anonymous - May 17, 2021 at 11:26 AM
5th Episode with the elderly old man wandering through the alley and where Mare follows him inside his house was shot in Marcus Hook at a development called the Village on Plaza Street. However, the alleyway for that scene looks like the one between Cedar and Maple Streets that were also used in episode one in the same development.

50- Anonymous - May 17, 2021 at 12:34 AM
As I am sure it will come up. The restaurant where Mare and Zabel have their date does not exist. It was built on the stage and was quite large.

Episode 5, Dylan's House is located on Jacob St in the village of Mont Clare, PA just over the Schuylkill River from Phoenixville, where other scenes took place.

Whoever said Bennie's is at 9th and Sproul is wrong. It was filmed at Christy's at 169 E Ridge Rd, Linwood, PA I watched it being filmed. Any word on which diner was used in episode 5? Real diner or soundstage set? Looks kind of like West Reading Diner.

The scene where DJ chases Jess starts at her apartment in Coatesville but ends with him dragging her from under the car was filmed in Marcus Hook in the alley on Maiden Lane between 8th st and Roger's Lane. Is the jewelry store in episode 6 Dyer's on Weir Road?

62- Anonymous - May 27, 2021 at 9:48 AM
TV shows and movies typically use bogus phone numbers (like 555-1212) but the phone number on the jewelry store receipt is a real number for a magisterial district judge in Allentown, PA. Also, surprised that the show is using real license plate numbers on the vehicles.

63- Chris Frost - May 29, 2021 at 5:36 PM
Mare's grandson visit's his estranged mother on Carver Court in Coatesville. It's the set-up location for the "sleepy tub" scene. It is unmistakable.

64- Legally Yours - May 30, 2021 at 2:05 AM
Awesome site - thanks! Just want to mention that "DelCo" is short for "Delaware County," so "Delco County" is redundant. Otherwise, as someone who grew up in Coatesville and now lives next door to the actual Easttown, I'm loving identifying local scenes.

65- Anonymous - May 31, 2021 at 1:22 AM
The "courthouse" or "courtroom" and where John talks to Lori after his hearing is all Founders Hall at Girard College. And no, we did not use real license plates - no show does, they are all fake and put on the cars when they get to set. They aren't even made of metal, they are printed.

66- Anonymous - May 31, 2021 at 9:54 AM
The scene where Richard was packing up his car to leave looks just like the street I grew up on, Judson St between Poplar and Parrish in Fairmount. I would love to know if this is correct!

67- Cam Douglas - May 31, 2021 at 12:42 PM
Correction to the first paragraph: the show is not set in the "real town" of Easttown. The real Easttown is a well-to-do part of Main Line Philadelphia in Chester County. The show is set in a fictitious town in Delaware County.

68- Gladly - Jun 1, 2021 at 1:20 AM
I'm pretty sure the restaurant where Mare, Helen, Frank and Faye, Siobhan, and Drew eat is Barnaby's Aston.

69- Anonymous - June 1, 2021 at 1:14 PM
Beginning shots is Blue Ball Ave in Boothwyn, PA. Shot of road crossing Ridge Rd in Linwood heading towards Sun Oil refinery in Marcus Hook.

The restaurant mare Faye Frank and the kids eat at in episode 7 is Duffers in Chichester. Anyone know where Freddie’s house was filmed? It reminds me so much of Folsom.

Dawn and Katie Baily's home is on the 400 Block of Yarnall Street in Chester, PA., near the Commodore Barry Bridge and the 5th Street Amtrak bridge. It's across the street from Macedonia SDA Church and The Better Living Center.

71- TJ Nicolaides - June 3, 2021 at 5:40 PM
I’d bet the cafeteria scenes were also shot at South Brandywine. I went to school there and recognized the room when it appeared.

72- Anonymous - June 4, 2021 at 4:19 PM
Does anyone know where Lori's house is located? We saw most of the first floor of the house and it has the EXACT layout and build as my old home in Wallingford PA (where Mare's house was). Was Lori's another Wallingford house?

73- Joe L - June 5, 2021 at 12:27 PM
There was more than one day of filming at La Porta Restaurant on Rt 353 at Sycamore Mills Road in Edgmont. I'm not sure whether any of that footage was used.

74- Anonymous - June 8, 2021 at 5:26 PM
When they were shooting in Coatesville they took over the empty Kmart in Thorndale for production purposes.

75- Anonymous - June 11, 2021 at 7:45 PM
Of course, the run-down street scene was in Chester on Edgemont Ave, near the train station lol.

76- Anonymous - June 22, 2021 at 2:23 PM
I have to go check out Coatesville. The police station is at the top of the hill, 259 Fleetwood Street, near the SEPTA underpass. Looking back down the bottom of the hill of North 3rd is on most promotional posters, material for the show.

Welcome to Coatesville! As a lifelong Southeastern PA resident - Grew up in Phoenixville, went to college at Widener U in Chester, and now live in Coatesville. This series was fun just to spot locations. Lots of Delco friends from my college days, Cardinal O'Hara and Archbishop Carroll kids.

My daughter was an extra for some of the scenes filmed here in Coatesville. The gym scenes were split between the Intermediate High School and South Brandywine. The cafeteria was at South also. My daughter was watching from just off-camera during the scene when Ryan beats the kid after teasing his sister. One of her best friends was at the table behind the beating.

The exterior of Ryan jumping the fence in the last episode was outside Gordon Learning Center on Kersey Street right behind City Hall. The basketball court he was on is Ash Park also on Kersey. BTW, NBA star Richard Hamilton (Pistons) grew up playing on that court as a kid. The train station/police station is still in use for Amtrak stops 2 to 3 times a day. It is off of 3rd Avenue before the rail underpass.

Fairview Cemetery is on the south hill of the town. I have family buried there. Carver Court is near the Coatesville High complex. The high-rise apartment is senior housing. The scenes were shot from the Diamond Street side but it also fronts on Lincoln Highway between 3rd and 4th avenues. In some of the street shots used as B-roll, you can see the steel mill in the background.

The gas station scene was shot in Phoenixville on Bridge Street across from the Nudy's Restaurant and Town Supply. My brother lives just up the hill from the location. His street was closed for filming when they were there. All good stuff. I'm sure my Delco friends had fun picking out locations too.

As a former Philly resident- now overseas- I very much appreciate this excellent novella series being set and shot in SE PA. Here is to hoping that this will be repeated by the likes of M. Knight S. even an ensemble cast DRAMEDY. May the public places receive added considerate visitors. Best wishes to the businesses that participated in this well-done theatrical drama. PLEASE be very respectful of the privacy and properties of those residents who showed the area to be lovely and the people, also. A round of applause to the neighbors who had to put up with inconveniences during filming.

I guess they never decided to keep the scene that was shot at McIntosh Inn in Media. I was staying there when they filmed a hotel scene.

Hi Ra, All of the hospital locations, the pediatrician's office, and the interaction with the coroner in episode two were filmed at the Silver Care campus (formerly Sacred Heart Hospital/Chester Community Hospital/branch of Crozer Chester Hospital) located at 2600 9th street in Chester, PA. It is a large facility and parts have been refurbished and are in use as an urgent care center. Other parts of the complex are still undergoing /awaiting renovation and projects continue to be filmed there.

The bridge that the bike gets thrown off of does cross the Brandywine Creek at Creek Road south of Route 1, but it's not on Route 100. PA Route 100 was re-routed in 2003 and no longer extends to the Delaware border. I guess you would call it "Old Route 100?"

Where were the shots taken of Zabel getting killed filmed? The rescue of the girls? Was it in the house connected to Christie's bar?
