Filming Locations: Where is The Spanish Princess filmed?

The new period series returns to the world of The White Princess and The White Queen, telling the story of the turbulent life of Catherine of Aragon, her arrival to Tudor's England, and her marriage with Henry VIII.

The Spanish Princess was filmed in England and Spain.

Most of the shoot took place in The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol, where the producers built a full-scale, interconnected replica of Tudor-era Westminster Palace.

Charlotte Hope (the perverse Myranda from Game of Thrones) leads the cast portraying the young Catherine.

The show was written by Emma Frost (who also created the acclaimed series The White Queen and The White Princess), and Matthew Graham (Life on Mars, Electric Dreams, Dr. Who).

Filming Locations in England

The Spanish Princess Bristol
The production was shot on location in several historic West of England sites, like the imposing Wells Cathedral in Somerset.

This stunning Gothic masterpiece is one of the great locations where Dungeons and Dragons was filmed.

The Spanish Princess on location
The Spanish Princess was also filming some scenes in the magnificent Gloucester Cathedral, a masterpiece of English Gothic architecture.

This location was used in some Harry Potter movies as Hogwarts, and also it was more recently featured in the Mary Queen of Scots film.

Locations in Spain

The Spanish Princess drehort
The series had the privilege to film in the Moorish Alhambra Palace in Granada, where Catherine of Aragon lived for a while, a location rarely available to film crews.

Also, according to the local production service company Fresco Film, the seris also filmed scenes in monuments and natural spaces in Almería and Seville, including the Real Alcázar palace.

  1. I am sure Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire was used as a location.

    1. Yes. All those castle courtyard scenes, entering and leaving the doorway, riding in through the arch, plus scenes with the castle in the background including the jousting on the castle lawns. An elevated exterior view of the castle was also used with an image of old London put behind it.

  2. Indoor shots from intial scenes suposedely in Granda, in fact were shot at the Alcazar i Seville
    Catarina de Aragon in fact was NOT born in Granada, but in Alcalá de Henares

  3. Catalina de Aragón was not born in Alhambra. She was born in Alcalá de Henares, on December 15th. 1485. Her parents Isabella Castilla and Fernando de Aragón, the Catholic Queen and King díd not take the City of Granada, where the Alhambra is, until 1492. But she lived there for some time.
