Filming Locations Guide: Where was John Wick 3 filmed? The Continental Hotel

Posted by

The grace period is over. The excommunicado, played by Keanu Reeves, has a global bounty placed on his head, after breaking the rules of conducting business on Continental Hotel grounds.

From now on, John has to face the High Table's resolutions, as he has become a $14 million target for any hired hitman in the world.

John Wick 3 was primarily filmed in New York City and Morocco. Have you noticed that most of the movie was shot at night and in the rain, except for the desert scenes?

John Wick 3 Location

Although this third installment could have been the last one, at least a fourth sequel and two new spin-offs are in the pipeline: the film Ballerina and the TV series The Continental. In addition, there is a chance of a crossover with the character of the Nobody movie, Hutch Mansell.

Also, find our complete guide to the filming locations with all the information about where John Wick 2 was filmed following this link.

The Continental Hotel Location

The Continental Hotel
The Continental Hotel essentially became another character in the film. Once more, the exterior was filmed in the Beaver Building in New York, which hosts a Haru Sushi restaurant.

The flatiron-shaped 15-story skyscraper was completed in 1904 in the Renaissance Revival style.

Cunard Building hall
The interior shots of the entrance hall were filmed at the Cunard Building at 25 Broadway in the Financial District of Manhattan.

The facade and the vestibule of this 22-story office building were designated as a New York City Landmark in 1995.

John Wick Hotel Hall
The Hotel continues to expand in every installment with new rooms and areas. The lounge and the bar of the hotel in John Wick 3 are the old The Williamsburgh Savings Bank.

This impressive neoclassical building, which opened in 1875, was designed like a temple to finance. Today, it has been transformed into an event space and houses the Brooklyn Flea Market.

John Wick Hotel set
According to American Cinematographer, the manager’s office two-story glass-and-steel structure on the top floors of the hotel was constructed at Gold Coast Studios in Long Island.

Rockefeller Center rooftop
The Continental’s terrace at the end of the movie was also built in the studio, as the Rockefeller Center rooftop used in Chapter 2 was not convenient for the filmmakers to control the lighting.

Where was John Wick Chapter 3 - Parabellum filmed?

First scene with the taxi in New York
John Wick Chapter 3 - Parabellum picks up shortly after where the second part ended, with John on the run. The movie begins in Times Square, with John wounded and disoriented running with his dog in the heart of Manhattan.

He takes the taxi at West 46th Street and 8th Avenue. Then he gets out of the cab at West 46th Street (pictured).

John Wick 3 Library
John retrieves a marker medallion and a rosary from a book kept at the New York Public Library on 5th Ave.

Completed in 1895, this New York landmark has been featured on-screen multiple times, including in the 1984 movie Ghostbusters.

The Chinatown scenery
Wick finds a doctor on Doyers Street in the historic neighborhood of Chinatown.

The entrance to the Metropolitan Horse Stables is located at 127 Plymouth St, just under the Manhattan Bridge on the Brooklyn side. These scenes were made with the help of the Bergen Equestrian Center in Leonia.

John Wick 3 film location
In the next shot, John is riding the horse almost nine miles away from there in the Bensonhurst neighborhood, still in Brooklyn.

This spectacular sequence was filmed under the tracks of the BMT Sea Beach Line near the 20 Avenue Station, in and around 86 Street.

Tarkovsky Theater
John meets "The Director" of the Ruska Roma society, played by Anjelica Huston, in the fictional Tarkovsky Theater. The home of the Russian ballet and the assassin academy in the movie is actually the United Palace of Cultural Arts (or the former Loew's 175th Street Theater).

Located at 4140 Broadway in Washington Heights (Manhattan), the venue opened in 1930 as a deluxe movie theatre, until it was purchased in 1969 by an evangelistic church association.

The filmmakers used the exterior, the lobby, and the auditorium of the theater, but some backstage rooms were filmed in an empty estate house in Yonkers.

Bowery King Manhattan
The exterior scenes with the Bowery King (played by Laurence Fishburne) were recorded on the top of a building near Manhattan Bridge at 135 Plymouth St.

Grand Central Terminal Station
The production got permission to film at the iconic Grand Central Terminal Station, New York's monumental transportation hub which opened in 1913.

Unlike the Pennsylvania Station, this cathedral-like building was saved from its destruction in the 1960s when it was designated a city landmark in 1967.

Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, the double-decked suspension viaduct connecting Staten Island and Brooklyn, was closed to film the spectacular motorcycle chase sequence.

However, the triumphal arch and colonnade at the bridge's entrance (upper picture) are from the Manhattan Bridge.

Filming Locations in Morocco

John Wick 3 drehort
A key section of the movie featuring Sofia Al-Azwar, the manager of the Continental Hotel in Casablanca played by Halle Berry, takes place in Morocco. Some establishing shots were recorded in the port and the citadel of Essaouira, doubling as Casablanca.

John walks through the archway streets and maze-like passages of the medina in the old town of this city, listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Essaouira City in Morocco
Sofia and John meet Berrada, a member of the High Table played by Jerome Flynn, in Essaouira's city walls and ramparts.

Scenes for season 3 of Game of Thrones were also filmed in this same bastion overlooking the Atlantic ocean.

Essaouira Old town market
The fight in the kasbah was filmed in the central Place Marché aux grains, a small square full of shops, lined with arcades and paved with pebbles.

Walking in the Desert in Morocco
The scenes in the Sahara Desert were filmed in the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga, near Erfoud.

This is a remote oasis town close to the border with Algeria, with huge sand dunes and amazing views over the desert.

Keanu Reeves leads the returning cast along with Ian McShane (Winston), Laurence Fishburne (the Bowery King), and Lance Reddick (Charon the concierge).
