Shibden Hall house and the filming locations where Gentleman Jack series is filmed

Gentleman Jack Locations

Gentleman Jack is an eight-part period drama produced by HBO and BBC One. Set in 1832 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, the story is inspired by the real life of Anne Lister, who returns home after years of overseas travel. She is determined to marry her female lover, heiress Ann Walker, and to reopen the coal mines to help the fate of her own family.

Anne Lister, played by Suranne Jones, lived openly as a lesbian. Some passages of the diaries containing her thoughts were coded and hidden after her death, and have been de-coded for the first time for the series. The manuscripts were rediscovered and decrypted in the 1980s by researcher Helena Whitbread.

Gentleman Jack was basically filmed in Yorkshire in England. A section of the shoot also took place in Denmark. Here are some of the most relevant filming locations of the series:

Where is Gentleman Jack filmed?

Gentleman Jack house
Anne inherited her ancestral home, Shibden Hall, a Tudor-style house located on the outskirts Halifax. Her diaries, written in a secret code, were hidden behind a panel in a room, where they stayed until it became the property of the municipal authority in 1930s. Some areas of the house like the bedroom were built in a studio.

  1. Where is the little thatched cottage that they used as a rendezvous spot? That was adorable!

    1. That was actually a 'stage set' constructed in Shibden Park in the grounds of Shibden Hall, which is now a popular municipal park in Halifax.
