Lochnafoy: Where was The Loch filmed? Filming Locations of the Loch Ness series
Posted by Ra Moon
The ITV drama The Loch, also known as Loch Ness, takes us not only to the deep, mystical waters of the famous loch but also to the breathtaking Highlands of Scotland.
On the surface, everything seems fine in a small village by the loch, but underneath, a real monster is threatening the community.

Heading up the cast of this six-episode production are Laura Fraser (The Missing, Breaking Bad), Siobhan Finneran (who starred in The Stranger, the Netflix series set in Cedarfield), and Don Gilet (EastEnders, Brief Encounters).
Like the village of Broadchurch or Loch Henry from Black Mirror, the fictional town of Lochnafoy is an amalgam of several real locations.
Welcome to Lochnafoy, and our guide to the filming locations of The Loch.
The Loch Location

Located at the south-west end of Loch Ness, Fort Augustus serves as the main setting for the town of Lochnafoy.

Many scenes were filmed in the streets surrounding the locks and bridges of the Caledonian Canal in Fort Augustus.

Annie’s family home is also located on Canal Side, along with the War Memorial Hall, which was used as the exterior of the city hall.

One of the key locations is the police station. Its exterior was filmed at this house on Carnoch Street in Glencoe Village.

Lochnafoy's school building is actually the Blairvadach Outdoor Education Centre, located in Shandon near Helensburgh, west of Glasgow.
The production also used studios located in Glasgow for several interior scenes.

The very first scene of the series was filmed at Greenacres Curling Club in Howwood, Renfrewshire, also west of Glasgow.

The scene where the first body was found was filmed in a quarry at Ballachulish.

According to production designer Andy Harris, a second quarry near Aberfoyle — Sglèatach, also known as Aberfoyle Slate Quarry — was used for filming the fourth episode.

The Lochnafoy Memorial Hall is actually the Queen’s Park Bowling Club in Glasgow.

The show features plenty of stunning drone aerial shots of the Glencoe Valley and Càrn Mòr mountain near Fort William.
A small underwater drone was used to capture the scenes beneath the surface. The footage of the dead body was filmed in a studio water tank and later combined with visual effects.

The beach that the youngsters laid the bones etc out on is Dores Beach at Dores Inn. Such a beautiful place, it’s made to have you believe it’s filmed in one place when in fact it isn’t. I visited the area twice now as I fell in love the first time, and after rewatching I found lots out!
DeleteThe school building is Blairvadach Outdoor Education Centre in Shandon, near Helensburgh which is West of Glasgow.

DeleteThe "Lochnafoy Memorial Hall" was Queen's Park Bowling club in Glasgow.
ReplyDeleteI've watched two episodes so far. The only "negative" I have with the programme is the splendor of the cinematography. It's so stunningly beautiful; I'm searching places in, near and around the places it's filmed and looking at real estate for sale. I would definitely say the location shoots are integral to the show.. like another character. Originally from England, having lived in the USA for decades.. what a lovely place to think of retiring. Might be a dream.. a nice one though. Now, back to The Loch. Thanks all for sharing. Google maps has had a workout from me prior to submitting this.
ReplyDeleteThe shot of Loch Leven above Ballachulish seems to have been airbrushed into another shot in the distance. Otherwise the Ballachulish Bridge would be visible to the left of the islands. I suspect they've merged it in with a shot of Loch Ness in the background.
ReplyDeleteYes - here's a view of Loch Leven from nearby: https://goo.gl/maps/d3WrS6vGRfC2 - you can clearly see the bridge behind the islands. Compare it to the photo above. A nice bit of clever graphics, ITV!
ReplyDeleteI think the doctor's house is Campsie House in the grounds of whar was Lennoxtown Castle Hospital in Lennoxtown to te north of Glasgow

ReplyDeleteGreat, thanks a lot!
DeleteSimon Marr's house - following the earlier comment re. the house being at Lennox Castle, I think this is the map reference: [https://goo.gl/maps/CGwdqFQzmCG2]
