Where was The Handmaid's Tale filmed? Guide to ALL the Filming Locations: The House in Gilead

Posted by Ra Moon

Welcome to the Republic of Gilead. The acclaimed Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale was filmed in and around Toronto, Canada.

Based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name, the show features great filming locations with outstanding cinematography, thanks to the good work of Colin Watkinson and director Reed Morano.

Where is The Handmaids Tale filmed

In a near-future dystopia, the world has become a very polluted place to the point that most women are infertile. The social unrest led to the emergence of a new totalitarian regime, that rose in a territory that used to be part of the United States.

A Christian puritan dictatorship was established and all the remaining fertile women came under the control of the state, to serve wealthy families.

The cast is headed by Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men, The Invisible Man) as June Osborne. Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love, Camelot) plays the powerful elite Commander Fred Waterford, and his wife Serena is performed by Yvonne Strahovski (Dexter, Stateless).

No improvement is needed! The only mistake I think I saw was that the baby being baptized was actually Hannah, not Nikole. This is wonderful and so educational and I was quite curious! Thank you so much for ponting out all the landmarks in context! So very much appreciated!

My mom works at the hamilton spectator. They were filming for season 2 there for a while. In the 2nd and 3rd episode, you can recognize areas of it when you are watching if you know the space and it looks like when they pull out of the location at the beginning of episode 3, it looks like the loading docks on the frid street side of it.

S2:E2 - The scenes where the lesbian couple (can't remember their names) is trying to fly out of Gilead were shot at Terminal 1 of Pearson Airport in Toronto.
S2:E3 - The scene early where Moira is running in a snowy park is Allan Gardens, Toronto. (I walked by when they were setting this up and the "little America" flags gave away it was for Handmaid's Tale).

45- Darren - July 28, 2018 at 2:57 PM
No update? On reflection, I might be wrong about Pearson but S2:E3 was definitely the Allan Gardens Conservatory (when you live three blocks away and see the set with "Little America" flags, nooses hanging from trees, and "missing persons" photos, it's hard to be mistaken).

Glad to help and thanks for the great work!
We suspect that Aunt Lydia's flashback/"dinner date" scene in S3:E8 was filmed in Sultan's Tent/Berber Lounge on Front Street.

The last image on your site (the new Rachel and Leah Center) from episode 2.06 is Vaughan City Hall in Vaughan (2141 Major MacKenzie Dr. W, Maple).

The greenhouse visited in "Toronto" S2 E9 is the greenhouse at The Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Ontario.

52- Anonymous - March 11, 2019 at 10:14 AM
No, it really isn't. It's Allan Gardens. They look nothing alike. RBG is mainly outdoors and does not have a domed conservatory like Allan does.

The mansion where June meets Hannah is called Cruickston Park. It has been the backdrop for a lot of Hollywood movies. Such as Cold Creek Manor, RED, Bitten, Hero's Reborn, Murdoch Mysteries, etc. There is a lot of history with this property. Here is a rare look inside and the family that lives there. https://www.cbc.ca/life/video/step-inside-a-restored-elizabethan-manor-with-30-ft-ceilings-and-a-baby-goat-1.4681449 For more history Google Cruickston Park. It is gorgeous! Cheers!

S2E9, the green house was shot in Allan Gardens too.

The building where Serena makes her speech is also inside the David Braley center (McMaster ) and she is shot outside (as you have noted here).

The jogging scene past the vigil in the park in Toronto is Allen Gardens, as I remember seeing the set up when walking my dog in the winter there when the crew took over the park, and I am fairly certain the greenhouse scene in S2E9 (Where they go to Toronto) is at the Conservatory in Allen Gardens.

60- John - July 18, 2018 at 1:38 PM
The final scene of the finale is in Burlington, just past Hidden Valley Park, in the tunnel under the 403.

The hotel Serena and Fred stay at in Toronto is made up of multiple locations. The lobby bar, where Serena meets Mark Tuello, the CIA agent, is the Ritz-Carlton Toronto's DEQ Lounge. The lobby of the hotel, seen in multiple scenes, is the lobby of Hotel X Toronto. The exterior entrance driveway, where Luke and the other protestors gather, is the Hilton Toronto, at 145 Richmond St. The "Hilton" signage is all covered with prop signs for the fictional "Broderick Hotel." Interestingly, the Hilton is also easily visible in the establishing shot of Toronto, as Serena and Fred's limo drives up University Avenue, and the huge "Hilton" name on top is clearly visible in the shot.

The greenhouse that Serena visits in Toronto in S2 E9 is not The Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington. There is no domed greenhouse there. It is the Allan Gardens Conservatory in downtown Toronto.

The scene when June gets on the train while trying to escape to Canada is filmed on the UP train that operates between the airport and Union Station in Toronto. You can even see the "UP" logo on the headrests.

Season 3 (so far) grocery store scene is at the Old empty Denninger's in Burlington, south of prospect on Guelph line. Saw them filming a few months ago.

In S3 the scene where June walks outside dressed as a Martha is filmed at St Lawrence Market in Toronto. I was across the street watching them :) also, many of the Little America scenes were done on Esplanade st in Toronto in and around David B Archer Co-op. One of the refugee offices was in Church in the City building also on Esplanade.

S2 E3 also has the shot of the building complex at Garden Court on Bayview Avenue in Toronto. And the ride on the train is the Union Pearson Express - looks like the station platform was Bloor St station.

The hotel June is taken to after arriving in Canada in Ep 7 is The Royal York (Fairmont). The hotel room they stay in appears to be one of the Gold suites with a few cosmetic changes.

The Longo's grocery store where June has the flashbacks/panic attack is likely this one where filming was spotted in January. https://twitter.com/tofilming_em/status/1352769247550840832

The place in the flashback where June and Luke are moving in together is a small apartment building, not a house. Although it is only three blocks north of the ‘Wexford mansion’. The Wexford house has been done up and no longer has the metal fence or the little garage. There’s a new flower bed and doesn’t look spooky anymore.

95- Jennifer Lucking - June 16, 2021 at 11:16 PM
The 4th season finale - the diner where June meets Commander Lawrence is Hutch’s on the Beach in Hamilton. The office building where June records her statement is The Globe and Mail Centre on King St E in Toronto.

4x09: June and Nick's meeting was filmed at the Rockwood Academy heritage building near K-W. Correction - I think it was near Guelph, not K-W!

The railway crossing in season 4 episode 3 is just north of Tottenham.

98- Mike - Sep 14, 2022, 2:01 AM
Some scenes were filmed at the rear of downtown buildings on St. Paul St. in St.Catharines, next to The Meridian Centre. It has been used in other productions due to its slummy shantytown look with some of the buildings looking especially run down due to the tin siding and iron stilts holding them up and resting on a steep incline. I can't recall what exact episode, but it is definitely from the 4th season.

99- Anonymous - Sep 14, 2022, 2:01 AM
The Waterloo Region airport is actually in Breslau (not Woolwich) :) I loved looking through this list! They have been filming near me at “Forbes Estate” in Hespeler, Cambridge.

In S4E03 the railroad crossing where June and Janine escape but the other handmaids are killed is on 7th line near Tottenham ON (44.0613263, -79.8042989). The rail line is part of the South Simcoe Railway Heritage Line. The train is CGI, and crossing gates and lights were props, but you can easily see the yellow painted tunnel under the Canadian Pacific mainline in the distance.

The Wheeler's safehouse in S5E4 and E5 - is the exterior driveway with the gate and 67 Greenbriar Drive plaque (where Serena wants to greet a supporter) a different location than the Forbes Estate which is shown for the interior and porch exterior? They look like two different houses. I can't find a match to any Greenbriar Drive so that may be fictional?

S4 E4 ‘Milk’ @ 33:15 shows June and Janine being transported outside of what appears to be the housing quarters of the group of survivors. The scene shows industrial-looking buildings with a few trucks and a motorcycle driving up to the lot. That was filmed in my hometown, downtown St. Catharines Ontario!
