The real Beechwood Island and the houses where We Were Liars was filmed
Posted by Ra Moon
Set on the Sinclair family’s private Beechwood Island, located near Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, We Were Liars was filmed entirely in Nova Scotia, Canada.

At Atlas of Wonders, we've tracked down the houses and the juiciest We Were Liars filming locations — ones you won’t find anywhere else (at least not until someone 'borrows' the info — and if you do, thanks for the link!).
You’ll find the locations listed more or less in the order of their first appearance.

The We Were Liars island

Beechwood Island, a 'landmark on the Martha's Vineyard Sound' in the series, is an amalgam of locations.
The shape of the island was created using CGI, based on a waterfront 20-acre estate on Blue Rocks Road near Lunenburg, which doubles as Clairmont in the series.

The We Were Liars house

Clairmont is the main family mansion on Beechwood Island, symbolizing the wealth of the new American Royalty.
However, only the exterior was filmed at this jaw-dropping property, which features a long, private sandy beach (referred to as Taft Beach in the show) and a heated pool.
Do you remember the stunning house featured in the 2011 movie Jumping the Broom? Neither do I, but it was filmed at this very same estate, currently valued at around 3,650,000 USD (five million Canadian dollars).

The Martha's Vineyard town scenes were filmed in the colorful town of Lunenburg, so beautiful it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
Founded in 1753 by German, Swiss, and British settlers, this unique village has preserved up to 70% of its original colonial buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Scoope Shoppe ice cream bar is actually The South Shore Fish Shack, a fish and chips restaurant located at 108 Montague Street in Lunenburg.
Lunenburg has served as a filming location for several major productions. The town doubled as Hanover Island in Maine in the fourth season of The Sinner, as Christmas Island in the 2023 Netflix movie of the same name, and as Matheson, Massachusetts in Locke & Key.

Cuddledown, Aunt Bess’s cozy but slightly rundown home in E. Lockhart’s books, was filmed at a waterfront vacation rental house in Indian Harbour.
Built in 2004 on a dramatic cliff, this five-bedroom house boasts 2,032 square feet and has a market value of about half a million dollars.

Located below Cuddledown, Cyrus Beach is the real name for Tiny Beach.

The funeral scene in the third episode, "The Ties Were Black, the Lies Were White," was filmed at St. Luke's Anglican Church in Hubbards, Halifax County.

The cliff-diving scene in the fifth episode, "Lying Together in a Silver Lining," was likely filmed at Ovens Natural Park.
Also known as The Ovens, this area is located along the coastal Lighthouse Route between Riverport and Lunenburg.

The scenes in the seventh episode, "Everybody Knows That the Captain Lied," where Harris invites Cady to join him in the Martha's Vineyard town, were also filmed in Lunenburg, on Pelham Street.

Dr. Moriarty Family Practice was filmed in the picturesque red house next door to the Saltwater Taffy stall.

The white, wave-swept granite rocks featured in the yoga scene were filmed near the iconic red-and-white lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove.

Like the house in Sirens, the modern New Clairmont mansion and the Beechwood Island lighthouse look like CGI creations.

But where is the dock? And Windemere?
