Where was Dexter filmed? The New Blood Locations in Iron Lake, NY

Posted by

Our favorite serial killer, Dexter Morgan, played by Michael C. Hall, is back after the original eight-season series aired its finale in 2013.

Dexter: New Blood was filmed in Western Massachusetts, although the new show is set in the fictional town of Iron Lake in New York.

Where is Dexter New Blood filmed

10 years after leaving Miami in Florida, Dexter has assumed a new identity by the name of Jim Lindsay.

Jeff Lindsay is the name of the novelist who wrote the novels that inspired the original television series, which were primarily filmed in Los Angeles and California.

Welcome to Iron Lake and our comprehensive spoiler-free guide to all the filming locations of Dexter: New Blood.

The new Dexter house

Dexter house
Dexter's isolated cabin was built at Camp Collier, a recreation ground on the shores of Lake Wampanoag.

The camp is located on the outskirts of the city of Gardner in Worcester County.

The house and all the film props were removed after the shoot, which took place in February 2021.

The Dexter's Iron Lake Town

Dexter Iron Lake
Iron Lake, NY, is actually just a lake located in a deserted area in Hamilton County near a small hamlet called Powley Place.

In the series, the town created for the series, inhabited by 2,760 souls, is located near the Seneca Nation of Indians, the largest of six Native American nations in New York State.

The Seneca historically lived south of Lake Ontario, an area that matches the location of the real Iron Lake.

The sign pictured was filmed in an area called The Bolton Flats, between Lancaster and Bolton.

Iron Lake NY
The actual filming location where most of Iron Lake was filmed is the picturesque village of Shelburne Falls in Franklin County, Massachusetts.

With a population of 1,731, the town is located about 43 miles north of Springfield and 114 miles west of Boston.

Shelburne Falls is composed of the town of Shelburne, on the right side of the river, and Buckland on the left.

Shelburne Falls
The metallic bridge between the two halves of the village, the Truss Bridge, is heavily featured in the series.

Shelburne Falls has another iconic bridge located next to this one: the Bridge of Flowers (pictured on the left) is a former trolley viaduct built in 1907, but it was transformed into a garden in 1929 after the railway company went bankrupt.

Fred's Fish and Game
Jim works at Fred's Fish and Game gunshop, filmed in a store called Bridge Street Bazaar on Bridge Street.

The butcher's shop is the McCusker's Market Grocery store at 3 State Street, just across the bridge.

Shelburne Falls is also the town where The Holdovers was filmed.

Iron Lake Tavern
The Iron Lake Tavern is the local pub and neuralgic center of the town's nightlife.

The exterior was filmed at the West End Pub, a casual restaurant overlooking the Deerfield river and both bridges.

The series took over Shelburne Falls for a couple of weeks during April 2021, so the film crew had to cover the streets with fake snow and Christmas decorations.

Dexter Bar
However, the interior of the West End Pub was too small for the dancing scenes.

The interior of the Iron Lake Tavern was filmed in the taproom area of the historic Bull Run Restaurant in Shirley.

This cozy tavern and music venue is hosted in a building dating back to 1740.

Dexter drehort
The exterior of the police station is the Buckland Town Hall, located just across the street from the West End Pub in Shelburne Falls.

According to Boston.com, the studio work was done at New England Studios in Devens.

Cadwell Truck Stop
The Daily Hampshire Gazette reported that the series was recording scenes at the Whately Diner.

This is the fillin gas station of the Cadwell Truck Stop that appears for the first time in the pilot episode, "Cold Snap".

Built in 1958, this classic Princess-style diner was originally located in Chicopee and moved to the current location near South Deerfield in the early 1970s.

Designed in 1901 by Guy Lowell, the architect of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the grand entrance of the property features a gated wrought iron fence.

According to Zillow, the house has a total of 65 rooms, 47 bedrooms, and 28 baths, and an estimated value of about $2,500,000.

Filming was also done in Sturbridge, Ma, up near the abandoned lead mines on Leadmine Road. The roads were blocked off and filming was done late at night.

The Welcome to Iron Lake sign picture... That is on the Bolton - Lancaster line, in Lancaster, looking toward Bolton. The area is called The Bolton Flats.

And Kurt's cabin?

How about the Vet’s barn? The Therapist's office? Bus stop from the end of the first episode? Miriam’s street in W Townsend? Just saying a town isn’t specific enough! But Kurt’s cabin seems to be the big mystery!

You have the correct address for Angela’s house, but the indoor scenes were also filmed there.

Episode 6: Too many tuna sandwiches @26:15 there is a map created for the show. But a lot of the terrain and names are reminiscent of the Mohawk Valley in Central NY, where I used to live. The highways don't add up and most names aren't real. Does anyone have any other info?
