Where was Godzilla vs. Kong filmed? Guide to ALL the Filming Locations: the House

Posted by

The highly-anticipated clash of the titans Godzilla vs. Kong was filmed in Hawaii, Australia, and Hong Kong.

The movie made extensive use of studio sets and CGI, so the filming locations are a bit disappointing if you are expecting to see the awesome landscapes of Hollow Earth in the real world.

Nevertheless, Atlas of Wonders has tracked down the magnificent places where this monstrous blockbuster was produced.

The movie is set to be the culmination of the MonsterVerse franchise produced by Legendary Entertainment, following the 2014’s Godzilla reboot, Kong: Skull Island (2017), and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019).

The cast is headed by Millie Bobby Brown as Madison Russell (Stranger Things, Enola Holmes), Alexander Skarsgård as Dr. Nathan Lind (The Legend of Tarzan, Big Little Lies), Rebecca Hall as Dr. Ilene Andrews (Tales from the Loop, Parade's End), and Brian Tyree Henry as Bernie Hayes (Joker, Hotel Artemis).

Welcome to our colossal guide to the filming locations of Godzilla vs. Kong. We have everything right here:

Where was Godzilla filmed?

Godzilla vs Kong location
The exterior of the Apex Cybernetics headquarters in Pensacola (Florida) was filmed in the Wastewater Treatment Plant located on the southeastern side of Oahu in Sand Island, near Honolulu.

As you can see, the high-tech corporation complex was extended using a lot of computer-generated imagery. Also, a lot of rubble and smashed cars were added to the set for the scenes after Godzilla's attack.

Apex Cybernetics
However, the interior scene pictured on top, when Bernie Hayes sneaks into the Apex facilities, was filmed many miles away from the Islands of Aloha.

This is the Bundamba Advanced Water Treatment Plant in Ipswich, Australia.

The new Mortal Kombat movie was also filmed in Australia, a country that is becoming a great filming location destination.

The scene in Pensacola Florida
The next sequence when Godzilla attacks the Pensacola complex, with people running in panic was filmed at the Aloha Tower Marketplace, the waterfront shopping center in Honolulu.

Godzilla vs Kong city
Local press reported that the Miami State High School in Gold Coast, Australia, was transformed into Madison's Tallahassee Magnet High.

The city of Tallahassee located in Florida hosts the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, the largest and highest-powered magnet lab in the world.

Godzilla vs Kong house
Madison and her father Dr. Mark Russell's house (played by Kyle Chandler) is located incredibly far away from the high school, at 4629 Aukai Ave in Honolulu.

Denham University
The Denham University of theoretical science in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a fictional place.

The filmmakers just used stock footage from the Marquette Hall at Loyola University in New Orleans.

The white building with columns is the Valley Life Sciences Building (VLSB) on the University of California, Berkeley campus. So random!

Monarch giant dome on Skull Island
Reel News Hawaii informed about more locations filmed in Oahu island. The production built a set at the Naval Air Museum in Kalaeloa Airport.

The set was described as a "massive metal wall with some sort of large circular looking machinery in front of it". As they had rain machines and cranes, this was probaly used to film a section of the 'Kongtainer' (Kong's Containment Monarch Outpost in Skull Island).

Maybe the platform in the Hollow Earth Launch Station in Antarctica was also shot here. In addition, film crews built a set in the old WW2 bunker called Battery Cooper in Kualoa Ranch.

Naval Kong aircraft carrier convoy
There’s a lot of CGI involved in the 18-minutes long sequence when the U.S. Navy fleet carries Kong sedated to the Hollow Earth entrance outpost in Antarctica.

However, some scenes were filmed using the retired battleship USS Missouri in Ford Island (Honolulu), with lots of sailors running around the boat.

This historical landmark is the site of the official Japanese surrender in WWII.

Godzilla vs Kong drehorte
The production shut down the Chinatown Mall in Fortitude Valley (a suburb of the City of Brisbane in Australia) for one day shoot.

We reckon that the scene in the Chinese shop was recorded here.

Hollow Earth throne room
A small section of Kong's throne room in the Hollow Earth was built in the studios to film close-up action scenes with the actors.

Screen Queensland confirmed that the filmmakers made extensive use of the Village Roadshow Studios in Oxenford, Gold Coast, to film many green screen and water tank scenes.

Large productions like Aquaman, Pirates of the Caribbean, or Thor Ragnarok have been filmed in the studios.

Screen Queensland also reported that the production recorded scenes at the Roosevelt Lounge at Broadbeach, the Workshop Rail Museum in Ipswich, the ULTIQA Rothbury Hotel, the Wickham Terrace Car Park, and the Masonic Temple in Brisbane.

But, have you seen them in the movie? Apparently, Godzilla vs. Kong is the last confirmed installment in the MonsterVerse. So if these scenes are not part of a future new episode, a lot of footage didn't make it to the final cut.

Apex facility in Hong Kong
A behind-the-scenes video shows that some action scenes with soldiers were filmed at the H-3 Freeway at Harano Tunnel in Oahu (Hawaii).

The Imperial Star Destroyer-esque look of the Interstate H-3 Viaducts tunnels were also featured in the new Magnum PI series and the Netflix movie Triple Frontier.

Also, local media like Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported about a helicopter crash filmed at the famous Lanai Lookout along Kalanianaole Highway and the Hawaii Convention Center.

However, these scenes might have been also deleted out of the final cut.

Apex Cybernetics headquarters
The mega-battle in Hong Kong with Mechagodzilla was made using establishing shots of the city with plenty of CGI thrown in.

When Godzilla arrives at the Asian metropolis, appears the Stonecutters Bridge and the massive harbor cranes of Tsing Yi Island.

The design of the Apex Cybernetics building in Hong Kong doesn't remind you much of the Tyrell Corporation headquarters from Blade Runner?

Godzilla in Hong Kong
Reel News Hawaii also reported about a scene filmed in the front and the underground parking garage at the Hawaii State Capitol building.

The facade was covered with scaffolding, so it may be hard to recognize it in the film.

Also, this is probably one of the scenes taking place in Hong Kong, as the production was only requesting people of Asian background to play as extras.

Kong monitoring station Hollow Earth
Some scenes in the jungle were filmed in the Tallebudgera Valley in Australia.

Thanks to Reel News Hawaii, we reckon that the final scenes in the Hollow Earth monitoring station (and probably, the first scene of the movie with Jia (Ilene's adopted daughter)) were filmed in the Manoa Falls Trail at Honolulu Watershed Forest Reserve.

“Denham University” is Loyola University in New Orleans. I went to Loyola and recognized it immediately. So random!

The second shot of DenhamUniversity is on the north-facing side of the Valley Life Sciences Building (VLSB) on the UC Berkeley campus.
