Filming Locations Guide: Where was Cursed filmed? The Castle Location

Posted by

Cursed is a new take on Arthurian mythology based on the graphic novel by the iconic author Frank Miller, the creator of Sin City, 300 or The Dark Knight Returns.

The story revolves around the legend of King Arthur from the perspective of Nimue, played by Katherine Langford, best known for her role as Hannah Baker in 13 Reasons Why.

Katherine Langford as Nimue

Nimue is a rebel teenage heroine, destined to become the mighty Lady of the Lake. The main cast is completed by Gustaf Skarsgård (Floki from Vikings) as Merlin, Devon Terrell as Arthur, and Daniel Sharman as the Weeping Monk.

Cursed was entirely filmed in the United Kingdom. This is our spoiler-free filming locations guide of this epic show:

Cursed Netflix city
According to local media, the medieval city set of Hawksbridge was built on land owned by the Ministry of Defence in Deepcut, a small town near Camberley (Surrey).

This set was reused in the series to play also Gramaire in the last episodes of the season (upper picture).

The fortified walls and the gate of both cities are basically the same set with small modifications.

Gramaire city
Multiple scenes were shot here recycling sections of the set, like Nimue's vision of Merlin fighting in an ancient Roman city in episode 6.

The medieval village
Nimue's village of Dewdenn, torched during filming, was set up on the banks of Frensham Little Pond, a National Trust property located in Farnham (Surrey).

The pond was originally a medieval bishops' fish pond, containing picturesque heathland and abundant wildlife.

The Fey forest
The Fey land and the Nemos sanctuary were set in Puzzlewood in Forest of Dean, (Gloucestershire).

This ancient woodland seems out of a fairy tale. You can find many scenic features including lush vegetation and peculiar rock formations covered by moss, natural cave systems, and an old Roman quarry.

The underground cavern from where Nimue and Morgana leave the abbey rowing are the Clearwell Caves, also located here near Puzzlewood.

The strange beauty of this place has attracted many film and television productions before like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and The Huntsman Winter's War just to name a few.

This is also one of the selected locations where The Secret Garden was filmed.

And where is the Cursed castle of Camelot? The exteriors are on a computer hard drive, I'm afraid... Uther Pendragon's fortress pictured above is an obvious CGI creation.

Camelot throne hall
However, it was very easy to recognize the spectacular interiors of the castle throne hall used in the pilot episode: The St Bartholomew-the-Great Church in Barbican, London, has been used as a filming location for several big-budget productions including The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Transformers: The Last Knight and Snow White and the Huntsman.

This medieval temple, founded in 1123, has undergone many changes and modifications throughout history, including a large restoration in the late 19th century.

Where was Cursed filmed
The scenes in the Yvoire Abbey with the Red Paladins (representing genocidal-minded religious zealots) were filmed in the medieval monastic Tithe Barn in Bradford-on-Avon (Wiltshire).

This well-preserved 14th-century building was also featured in The White Princess series.

Yvoire Abbey
However, the cloister and some medieval vaulted rooms are from the Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire near Bath.

This National Trust property was used to film interior sequences of Hogwarts for the first and the sixth Harry Potter movies and also appeared in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

The church location
What about the panoramic external view of the Abbey? This digital creation seems inspired by the traditional architecture of the churches in Georgia (the Caucasus region), often built in the middle of superb scenic landscapes.

The waterfall sword of power
The rocky waterfall and pool where the Wolf-Blood Witch fights the Red Paladins is the ornamental cascade of Virginia Water located at Windsor Great Park near London.

WalesOnLine gave us some hints about the location of the scenes of Lord Rugen's subterranean lair in episode 4, filmed in the Llanfair Slate Caverns.

Merlin escapes from the ruined city in the Moel Tryfan Slate Quarry in Snowdonia National Park.

Ruined castle
The ruined castle where Nimue meets Merlin in episode 6 pictured above doesn't exist in the real world.

Most of the scenes set here were shot in the romantic remains of Waverley Abbey in Farnham, Surrey. Abandoned since the 16th-century, this is a great location for productions set in a medieval world like Cursed.

Manor house
The Fisherman's massacre in episode 7 was filmed in the Tretower Court and Castle (Llys a Chastell Tre-tŵr) in Breconshire.

The skulls underground room
The awesome underground skull dome with a central opening from episode 7 is also a studio set, very reminiscent of the not less awesome Sedlec Ossuary in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic.

This church is decorated with real skeleton bits and pieces of between 40,000 and 70,000 people. You can visit this Gothic chapel featuring a huge chandelier of bones beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints.

The set of Gramaire's throne hall and all the studio work were hosted at Langley Film Studios in Berkshire.

The cursed series beach
Poldark's Cornwall reported that film crews landed on Holywell Bay with a mobile stable unit for about 30 horses.

This golden sand beach backed by numerous dunes is located near Newquay, a major surf haven in Cornwall.
