Where was Gentleman Jack filmed? The House & all the Locations

Posted by

Now back for season two, Gentleman Jack was primarily filmed in Yorkshire in England. Produced by HBO and BBC One, a section of the filming also took place in Denmark.

Set in 1832 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, the plot is inspired by the real-life of Anne Lister, who returns home after years of overseas travel.

Gentleman Jack Locations

In the story, Anne is determined to marry her female lover, heiress Ann Walker, and to reopen the coal mines to help the fate of her own family. Anne Lister, played by Suranne Jones, lived openly as a lesbian.

Some passages of the diaries containing her thoughts were coded and hidden after her death, and have been de-coded for the first time for this period drama. The manuscripts were rediscovered and decrypted in the 1980s by researcher Helena Whitbread.

Here is our almost spoiler-free guide to the filming locations of Gentleman Jack.

Where is Gentleman Jack filmed?

Gentleman Jack house
Anne inherited her ancestral home, Shibden Hall, a Tudor-style house located on the outskirts of Halifax.

Her diaries, written in a secret code, were hidden behind a panel in a room, where they stayed until the building became the property of the municipal authority in the 1930s.

Some interior rooms of the house, including the bedroom, were built in a studio.

    1. That was actually a 'stage set' constructed in Shibden Park in the grounds of Shibden Hall, which is now a popular municipal park in Halifax.
