Where is After Life filmed? Tambury Filming Location of Ricky Gervais Netflix series

Posted by

The After Life Netflix hit series starring actor and comedian Ricky Gervais will be back soon for a third season. The creator of the popular British sitcom The Office plays Tony Johnson.

Tony is a journalist working for a local newspaper called Tambury Gazette. He's struggling to cope with the death of his wife, Lisa. To take revenge on the universe for ruining his previously happy life, Tony decides from now on to say and do whatever he wants.

After Life was filmed in Hemel Hempstead, appearing in the show like Tambury, a surprisingly sunny city in England. This historic town in Hertfordshire, near Luton, is part of the Greater London metropolitan area.

Also joining the cast are David Bradley (Walder Frey from Game Of Thrones), Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey, Doctor Who), Ashley Jensen (Extras), Tom Basden (Plebs, Quacks), Tony Way (Edge of Tomorrow), and Diane Morgan (Mock the Week).

Here is our (almost) complete guide to the filming locations of After Life - you'll find the season 2 updates below in the report.

After Life filming locations
The lovely square where the Tambury Gazette building is located is in the centre of Hemel Hempstead, at 48 High Street.

The Old Town Hall, Gadebridge Park, and St Mary's Church (where Tony walks his dog in some scenes) are also situated near the square.

Tony walks the dog in the beach scene
Hemel Hempstead is located only 24 miles northwest of central London, but pretty far away from the coast or any beach.

In the third episode, Tony walks his dog on a short path which, using movie magic, has them appear many miles away on the wonderful Camber Sands beach in East Sussex.

Hill Garden and Pergola
The scene pictured in the 4th episode was filmed in The Hill Garden and Pergola, located west of Vale of Health. This magnificent Georgian park was also featured shortly in the first episode.

The only seaside town in Britain without screeching seagulls... I live in Hitchin and thought it looked Hitchinesque so it's interesting that it's fairly close. I'm enjoying the series very much.

Have just eat-watched all 6 episodes in one night. We loved it. Fell in love with the fictitious Tambury city. British humor is the best.

The Tambury Gazette office was in the Old Town area (High St) of Hemel Hempstead about a mile from my house... it must have been filmed very early in the morning to be that quiet!

I'm pretty sure the interior of the care home is filmed at Bulstrode in Gerrards Cross.

I think that he ends up in Golders Green at some point.

Indeed. I recognized my favorite Italian restaurant from the time I was living in Hampstead in 2000 - it is the venue of Tony’s date.

I love British humor and R.Gervais has surely outdone himself in the heartwarming, outrageous comedic masterpiece. His quirks, slurs, and outlandish rudeness make this so poignant as a man deals with the loss of a loved one. I can relate, as I suddenly lost my husband of 48yrs, and the accurate struggles he displays are funny, depressing in truth, and he crosses the fork in the road to heal with the help of his friends and loved ones. 5 Stars and will watch it again and again just to witness his sharpness in retorts with a sincerity of character that is genuine and inspiring.

Could easily have watched it all in one night — it’s so good — but I stretched it over three nights because I knew from the middle of the first episode that I’d be sad when it was over. Can’t wait until Gervais makes another series (season in Canada, US).

A great mini-series, the different places were so well-chosen, it's so nice to know they really exist!

The Old Bell pub, shown briefly right at the start of S1 E1 looks a lot like a pub of that name in Warminster, Wilts... but I guess that it's not in fact the same pub. Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks for your information. Such an amazing series. I'm from Vietnam, love to see every single scene, so lovely they are. I hope to come and visit there someday after all this is over.
