After Life is a new six-episode Netflix series starring actor and comedian Ricky Gervais. The creator of the popular British sitcom The Office plays Tony. He's a man working in a newspaper called Tambury Gazette, who is struggling to cope with the death of his wife, Lisa. To take revenge of the universe for ruining his previous happy life, Tony decides from now on to say and do whatever he wants.

Also joining the cast are David Bradley (Walder Frey from Game Of Thrones), Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey, Doctor Who), Ashley Jensen (Extras), Tom Basden (Plebs, Quacks), Tony Way (Edge of Tomorrow) and Diane Morgan (Mock the Week).

After Life was filmed in Hemel Hempstead, looking in the show like a a surprisingly sunny city in England. This historic town in Hertfordshire, near Luton, is part of the Greater London metropolitan area. Here are some of the most relevant filming locations of the series:

After Life filming locations
The lovely square where the building of the Tambury Gazette is set, is located on the centre of Hemel Hempstead, at 48 High St. Very close from there are the Old Town Hall, Gadebridge Park and St Mary's Church (where Tony walks his dog in some scenes).

Hemel Hempstead episode
The Coffee Cup place from the second episode is also in High Street. Hemel Hempstead is located only 24 miles northwest of London, but pretty far from any beach. Image courtesy of Netflix - Google Maps

The charming street where Tony lives is located in Vale of Health, a tiny hamlet with a pond in Hampstead (London), that has survived development pressures over time. Image courtesy of Netflix and Google Maps

In the third episode, Tony goes to walk the dog. After a short path they travel many miles away, turning up in the wonderful Camber Sands beach in East Sussex. Image courtesy of Diamond Geezer - Map

Hill Garden and Pergola
The scene pictured above from the 4th episode was filmed in The Hill Garden and Pergola (west of Vale of Health). This magnificent Georgian park was also featured in the first episode. Tony’s date takes place in the Villa Bianca Italian restaurant in Hampstead. The garage where Julian sleeps is located in Flask Walk, also in Hampstead. After Life drehort
Many scenes were filmed in Beaconsfield (Buckinghamshire). The care home is the Old Town Registration Office, and the graveyard is almost across the street, in the grounds of St Mary & All Saints church. The crematorium from the last episode is located behind this church. Image courtesy of Netflix - Map

  1. Where was Tony's house in After Life? Such a charming street.

    1. It’s in the Vale of Health, Hampstead, London. https://goo.gl/maps/DtVMhc1UtF42

  2. The only seaside town in Britain without screeching seagulls... I live in Hitchin and thought it looked Hitchinesque so it's interesting that it's fairly close. I'm enjoying the series very much.

  3. The beach scene in episode 3 is Camber sands

  4. We watched the whole series in one evening. Absolutely brilliant !!!!

    1. Couldn't agree more - also watched it all in one sitting - was almost falling off the chair laughing! Some jaw dropping moments as so non pc-loved it, loved it!!!

  5. There is some Hampstead in episode 3, I think.

  6. The school looks like St. John’s in millend Rickmansworth

  7. We just watched it all today too.
    Thoroughly enjoyed it.
    The locations looked lovely.

  8. Have just eat watched all 6 episodes in one night. We loved it. Fell in love with the fictition Tambury city. British humor is the best.

    1. The Tambury Gazette office was in the Old Town area ( High St ) of Hemel Hempstead about a mile from my house..........it must have been filmed very early in the morning to be that quiet

  9. I'm pretty sure the interior of the care home is filmed at Bulstrode in Gerrards Cross

  10. Think he ends up in golders green at some point

  11. Indeed. I recockned my faovourite Italien restaurant from my time Living i Hampstead in 2000 - it is the venue of Tony’s date

    1. I love British humor and R.Gervais has surely outdone himself in the heartwarming, outrageous comedic masterpiece. His quirks, slurs, and outlandish rudeness makes this so poignant as a man deals with loss of a loved one. I can relate, as I suddenly lost my husband of 48yrs & the accurate struggles he displays are funny, depressing in truth, and he crosses the fork in the road to heal with the help of his friends and loved ones. 5 Stars and will watch it again & again just to witness his sharpness in retorts with a sincerity of character that is genuine & inspiring.

  12. Could easily have watched it all in one night — it’s so good — but I stretched it over three nights because I knew from the middle of the first episode that I’d be sad when it was over. Can’t wait until Gervais make another series (season in Canada, US).
