Where is Sokovia? The Locations in Italy

Hydra fortress in Italy
The Hydra fortress at the beginning of the film is located in the fictional Eastern European nation of Sokovia.

This spectacular sequence was filmed at the 19th-century Fort Bard. The stronghold was lined with fake snow.

This castle is situated in the historic route that controls the border pass between Italy and France in the Aosta Valley (northwest of Italy).

Sokovia location
A large section of the city of Aosta was transformed into Sokovia's capital city. The filmmakers recruited many extras from the local population to film around the market square.

A few more scenes were also recorded in the towns of Donnas, Verrès, and Pont-Saint-Martin (pictured), featuring Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff) and her speedy brother, Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson).

Where is Sokovia filmed
The former Yugoslavia was the inspiration of Sokovia; The signs of the streets were replaced by others in Serbian, and some old eastern European cars were placed in the set.

Bangladesh
Shipbreaking yards in Bangladesh
The footage not including actors, representing a shipyard (the Salvage Yard) in the scene when Ultron is meeting a dealer, was filmed in Chittagong.

Here are located the famous toxic shipbreaking yards. You may have seen before impressive images or videos of massive ships that are being dismantled on the beach.

South Africa
Iron Man in Johannesburg
The square in the City Hall of Johannesburg became a battlefield, featuring the Hulk and the fat version of Iron Man, the Hulkbuster armor.

The cast and crew filmed in South Africa for two weeks, blocking streets and creating some traffic jams around the Central Business District of Johannesburg.

A few outdoors were also recorded in Carlton Centre, the Rea Vaya bus station, and in Gandhi Square.

Captain America and the Sevit island in Seoul
The floating artificial Sevit islands on the Han River appear in the movie as the U-Gin Genetics Research building.

More action scenes were filmed at the massive Cheongdam Bridge (which connects two sides of the city with road traffic and a line of the Seoul Subway), the almost one-mile-long Mapo Bridge, and at Ttukseom park.

United Kingdom
Scene Wolverine in a snowed forest
The Hawley Woods in Hampshire and Bourne Woods in Surrey staged the scene in the snow at the beginning of the movie.

The house of The Old Guard movie was also filmed near here.

Hawkeye secret family house
The secret safe house that is supposed to be somewhere on the west coast of the USA, is actually located in the UK.

The country manor was built in the Stratfield Saye estate in Hampshire, a property owned by the Duke of Wellington.

Interior Rivoli Ballroom London
The red velvet Rivoli Ballroom offers genuine decor, almost untouched since it was renovated in the 1950s. It has been used in many other movies and productions.

In Age of Ultron, this dance hall appears in a flashback sequence taking place during WWII.

Ultron ship scene
This location is a bit hidden: the sequence inside a boat was filmed in a venue in the middle of London, called The Printworks.

God of thunder temple church
The scene where Thor has a vision and sees a temple was filmed at the St Bartholomew the Great church in London (pictured).

Some more locations in the UK include the Royal Holloway College in Surrey, the tunnels of the Dover Castle in Kent (Hydra Fortress), and the Hendon Police College in London (that was also used for scenes of the city of Sokovia, including a set of a ruined church).

New Avengers headquarters
The Sainsbury Centre of Visual Arts building from the University of East Anglia in Norwich served as the exterior of the New Avengers headquarters.

A large “A” sign for the Avengers was placed inside the coffee shop of the building.

The production was hosted at Shepperton Studios (part of Pinewood Studios) near London.
