The Sokovia Filming Location: Where was The Avengers: Age of Ultron filmed?

Set in the fictional country of Sokovia, the second part of the Hollywood blockbuster The Avengers is the most international Marvel movie yet.

Age of Ultron was filmed on location in five different countries: Italy, South Africa, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Bangladesh.

Where is Sokovia?

Age of Ultron location
In Sokovia, a fictional Eastern European nation inspired by Serbia, the Avengers attack a Hydra facility.

The snow battle was filmed at Hawley Woods in Hampshire and Bourne Woods in Surrey, England.

Hydra fortress in Italy
This spectacular sequence at the Hydra fortress was filmed at the 19th-century Fort Bard in Italy. The stronghold was lined with fake snow.

This castle is situated on the historic route that controls the border pass between Italy and France in the Aosta Valley (northwest of Italy).

The tunnels of Dover Castle in Kent, England were also used for some interior shots.

Sokovia Avengers
Several towns in the Aosta Valley appear as Sokovia's capital city, like Pont-Saint-Martin, pictured.

Nestled in the Italian Alps, bordering France and Switzerland, the Aosta Valley is renowned for its breathtaking mountain scenery and charming villages.

Stark Tower in New York
The Stark Tower in the middle of Manhattan, New York is a CGI creation.

The interior was a large set built at Shepperton Studios (part of Pinewood Studios) near London.

Salvage Yard African coast
The ships in the Salvage Yard on the African coast were filmed in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

This is where the famous toxic shipbreaking yards are located. You may have seen striking images or videos of massive ships being dismantled on the beach.

Ultron ship scene
The interior of the boat was filmed at a venue in central London called The Printworks.

Originally a printing factory, The Printworks has been transformed into a vibrant space that hosts a wide range of events, including concerts, festivals, and exhibitions, and is known for its industrial chic ambiance.

Black Widow Red Room
As MCU Location Scout reported, the Black Widow's flashback, back to her time in the Red Room, was filmed at the Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in Hertfordshire, England.

This prestigious institution is known for its rigorous training in dance, drama, musical theater, and singing.

Many graduates of Tring Park have gone on to achieve notable success in the world of entertainment.

Interior Rivoli Ballroom London
Captain America's WWII hallucination was filmed in London's red velvet Rivoli Ballroom.

Used in many other movies and productions, this historic dance hall offers genuine decor, almost untouched since it was renovated in the 1950s.

Asgard Hall
The scene where Thor has a vision and sees the Asgard Hall was filmed at the St Bartholomew the Great church in London.

Dating back to the 12th century, it is one of the oldest surviving churches in the city and is renowned for its medieval architecture.

Iron Man in Johannesburg
The City Hall Square in Johannesburg, South Africa, became a battlefield, featuring the Hulk and the fat version of Iron Man, the Hulkbuster armor.

The cast and crew filmed for two weeks in the country, blocking roads and causing some traffic jams in Johannesburg's Central Business District.

Some outdoor shots were also taken at the Carlton Centre, Rea Vaya Bus Station and Gandhi Square.

Brent Civic Centre
However, the shopping center is the Brent Civic Centre in Wembley, London.

Completed in 2013, this building serves as the administrative headquarters for the London Borough of Brent, housing various council offices and facilities.

Barton Farm
The secret safe house, supposedly located somewhere on the west coast of the USA, is actually located in the UK.

The Barton Farm was built in the Stratfield Saye estate in Hampshire, a property owned by the Duke of Wellington.

Royal Holloway College
There is a short scene where Thor goes to the Royal Holloway in Egham, Surrey, to find Erik Selvig.

Established in 1886, the college is known for its stunning Victorian architecture and beautiful campus set within 135 acres of parkland.

Captain America and the Sevit island in Seoul
The floating artificial Sevit islands in Seoul, South Korea appear in the movie as the U-Gin Genetics Research Lab.

Located on the Han River, these islands consist of three interconnected structures, created as part of the Hangang Renaissance Project.

Cheongdam Bridge
The massive Cheongdam Bridge connects two sides of the city with road traffic and a line of the Seoul subway.

The loop is located in Ttukseom Hangang Park, but the scene after Captain America jumps over the truck was filmed on the nearly mile-long Mapo Bridge, which is several miles away.

The Avengers Drehorte
The Avengers Quinjet flies over Sangam Cultural Square in the Digital Media City.

The truck chase was shot on the World Cup Boulevard, located in the same area of Seoul.

The sequence where the Black Widow rides a motorcycle into smaller alleys was filmed in the Gangnam (Style) district.

The scene with the alleyway under the expressway and the stairs was filmed in the Pyeongchon-dong area of another city called Anyang. You can see the locations in more detail here at Mculocationscout.com.

TAG
The train was filmed near the Cheongdam Bridge under the Dongbu Expressway, across from the Jamsil Sports Complex.

The flying truck was filmed between the Dongjak Bridge and the Hangang Railway Bridge.

The Korean street where the train derails was filmed at Longcross Studios in England.

Sokovia location
Back in Sokovia, several scenes were filmed in and around the IV Novembre Square in Pont-Saint-Martin, Italy.

The filmmakers recruited many extras from the local population to film in and around this market square.

The former Yugoslavia was the inspiration for Sokovia; street signs were replaced with others in Serbian, and some old Eastern European cars were placed on the set.

Sokovia country
Sokovia's main square was filmed in the old Metropolitan Police College in Hendon, London.

The Peel Centre building, with the statue of Sir Robert Peele, was redeveloped and demolished between 2014 and 2016.

Quicksilver in Aosta
The town of Aosta appears in some scenes with Quicksilver, with the ruined Roman walls as a backdrop.

The village of Verrès, also in Italy's Aosta Valley, was used for a few scenes with Hawkeye and the Scarlet Witch.

New Avengers headquarters
The Sainsbury Center of Visual Arts building at the University of East Anglia in Norwich served as the exterior for the New Avengers facility in upstate New York.

A large “A” sign for the Avengers was placed inside the building's coffee shop.


ExCeL London
Also, some interiors were filmed at the ExCeL London (Exhibition Centre London) building in the Royal Docks area.

Boasting over 100,000 square feet of flexible event space, this is one of the largest event venues in the United Kingdom.

The movie shows an impressive cast of stars, including Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff or Black Widow), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark or Iron Man), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers or Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), and Mark Ruffalo (Hulk).
