Where was The Man from U.N.C.L.E. filmed?

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is a remake of a TV series from the 60s, set during the Cold War: a top CIA agent infiltrates in East Berlin to track down the daughter of a Nazi scientist who can create an atomic bomb for a criminal organisation. The American agent and another one from KGB will team up with the girl, to face together the common enemy.

The movie is a classic spy-action-comedy, but filmed with the touch of the talented Guy Ritchie (responsible of the brilliant Snatch or Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), and set partially in the Mediterranean.

The leading actors form a troupe of sexy and glamorous Hollywood stars, with Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Elizabeth Debicki, Alicia Vikander, and Hugh Grant. This elegant crew will take us to the filming locations in Italy and United Kingdom. Contains no spoilers!

Where was The Man from UNCLE filmed
We start in Rome, just below the Spanish Steps. The Swedish actress Alicia Vikander seems to be the new Audrey Hepburn, who together with Gregory Peck had a ride aboard a Vespa in the classic film from 1953 Roman Holiday.

The Man from UNCLE
This is one of the most popular promotional images of the film. It's supposed that the actors are in a terrace of the Grand Plaza Hotel. However, the statue in the background is standing on the top of Trajan's Column, a bit far from the real location of the luxurious hotel. Image courtesy of Warner Bros

Baia Castle, known as Castello Aragonese (Castle from Aragon). It proved virtually impregnable, dominating the entire Gulf of Pozzuoli. The red house in the bottom -Villa Ferretti- also appears on the film. It turns out that this property was confiscated from the mafia not long ago. Image by Luca Paladino
