Where was Ripley filmed? The houses and all the locations in Italy and New York

Posted by

Boasting great filming locations and superb photography, the Netflix series Ripley was filmed in Italy and New York.

The story is based on Patricia Highsmith's 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, which also inspired the 1999 film starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Hailed as one of the best series to come out of 2024, the neo-noir show is also a lesson in how to navigate the world with 60s technology.

This time around, the cast is led by Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley, Johnny Flynn as Richard 'Dickie' Greenleaf, and Dakota Fanning as Marjorie 'Marge' Sherwood.

Here is our spoiler-free guide to (almost) all the filming locations of Ripley. You'll find the locations in order of appearance.

The Ripley locations

As designer David Gropman told Atlas of Wonders, the team decided to use the station's previous architecture as inspiration, creating the version we see on screen from archival plans and research photos.

A 300-foot platform was built at a train maintenance yard in Rome, and five vintage cars were brought from Milan for the shoot.

It appears that the Galleria Borghese scene was filmed in a different location (not the actual Borghese villa).

My wife and I are headed to Rome for a vacation tomorrow (the first time). This was a GREAT series and a fantastic preview of what's to come. Steve Zaillian did an amazing job with this project. Robert Elswit's cinematography was outstanding. This is a MUST-see series!

What a great site, and so well researched - full of great history and details. Here are a few more bits of information you may want to include:

Because Napoli Centrale Station was just completed in 1960, we decided to use the previous station architecture as our inspiration. 300 feet of platform was built at a train maintenance yard in Rome, along with five period cars from Milan. The rest was created from archival plans, research photos, and our concept art, by a great VFX team. The interior of the station was filmed at Ospedale Forlanini, 1934, by Ugo Giovanozzi, architect - with views of the exterior and train platform provided by VFX.

The Hotel Miramare interiors were filmed in a private residence in Atrani. The exterior was that of a closed convent in Atrani.

You're correct, the work of Fernando Sanfelice (the proper spelling) is so magnificent we used it twice, but not the same building. His two masterpieces sit side by side.

Tom's entry into the "Hotel Excelsior" was shot in the grand ballroom of the Grand Hotel Plaza, which we turned into the lobby and reception desk. Tom and Freddie's suites were shot at Palazzo Ruspoli in central Rome.

Also at EUR, we created the interior of Roma Termini Station in the Palazzo dei Congressi, 1936.

The "Galleria Borghese" was filmed at Palazzo Taverna in central Rome. The Bernini statue of Apollo and Daphne is a copy we brought in.

Although Tom is seen leaving, then returning to, Freddie's Fiat along the aqueduct, he drives the car to and abandons it on, the Appian Way.

The last photo is of Palazzo Pantelleria in Palermo. The courtyard was used to portray the exterior of "Hotel Palma." The lobby for Hotel Palma was created at Palazzo Ruspoli in Rome. Tom's Hotel Palma suite was filmed at the Grand Hotel Plaza in Rome.

That's great - we've added a few more locations in Sicily as well.

Only the Exterior of the Naples American Express was filmed at the Palazzo delle Poste e Telegrafi. The interior was created at Palazzo dell'Aeronautica in Rome, (Architect: Roberto Marino. Built circa 1931) as well as the interior of Brooks Brothers.

Loved this miniseries and loved finding this site. Travel to Italy often (we are importers of Italian food) and kind of obsessed with Italy. I have an addition and an inquiry: The addition: There is no mention of the great Caffè Florian in Venice. I think Tom visits twice, once alone and once with John Malkovich, which is a great reference to previous Ripleys.

Inquiry mostly of David Gropman (what a great job you did and loved seeing you contribute!): How did you get the aerial scenes of P. Venezia in Rome... Did you use another round (not oval) piazza and somehow insert the Vittorio Emanuele? These night scenes of the car running through Rome's streets and around the square reminded me of the amazing Rome segment from Night on Earth with Roberto Benigni. I am wondering if this influenced you.
