Titanic star Kate Winslet plays the role of writer Alex Martin and Idris Elba is Dr. Ben Bass.
Director Hany Abu-Assad (Paradise Now, Omar) wanted to shoot in a place he described as "beautiful, but dangerous".
In the fiction, the two main characters are stranded in the High Uintas Wilderness (Utah). However, The Mountain Between Us was filmed in a remote location in the Columbia Mountains (on the west side of the Canadian Rocky Trench) and in Vancouver.

The airport where it all begins was shot in two different locations.
The first, in the terminal where Alex and Ben meet, was filmed at the US Departures Terminal at Vancouver International Airport.

But the airport where the duo hires private pilot Walter (played by Beau Bridges) to fly them from Idaho to Denver was filmed at Abbotsford International Airport, located about 40 miles (65 kilometers) east of Vancouver.

The producers chose a southern area of the Columbia Mountains near the border with the United States in order to have longer days for filming.
The wreckage set was built on a mountaintop in the Purcell Mountains in British Columbia. The production filmed at nearly 11,000 feet.

The town of Invermere and the Panorama Mountain Resort were used as a base for the cast and crew.

Helicopters transported the team every day to the mountaintop for filming.
When the weather was bad, they shot scenes that didn't require a mountain backdrop in the lower areas of the base camp.

The cliff scene with the river below was filmed at Leap of Faith Falls on the Elk River, just outside of Fernie, BC.

According to one of our readers, the cabin, along with the root ball they slept under for one night, was built in Vancouver and transported to a farm near Invermere.
The lake near the cabin is actually the farmer's field, naturally covered with snow in winter.
The hole where she falls through the ice was a 6-by-6-foot concrete culvert with a trapdoor, buried in the field the previous summer.

During filming, the false lake was filled with slightly warm water to prevent steam.
The scene was shot on a day when the temperature was -5°C (23°F). On another day, the thermometer dropped to -38°C (-36.4°F).
In an interview, Kate Winslet compared the filming to that of The Revenant due to the harsh shooting conditions.

The restaurant at the end of the movie was filmed in two different locations.
The interior is the Bauhaus Restaurant in Gastown, Vancouver.

However, it’s not a mountain but an ocean that lies between the restaurant's interior and the exterior.
The outdoor scenes were filmed at the Italian restaurant Locale Southbank in London.

Other locations include the Oceanic Plaza in downtown Vancouver (pictured), Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody, and Mammoth Studios in Burnaby.
