Where was All Her Fault filmed? The house and (almost) all the locations in Chicago

Posted by

Although it is set in Chicago, All Her Fault was primarily filmed in and around Melbourne, Australia.

The series is based on the bestselling novel by Andrea Mara, which was originally set in Dublin, Ireland.

All Her Fault Australia

Most of the series was filmed in Australia because production costs are lower, tax incentives are generous, and Melbourne’s suburbs can convincingly double as American neighbourhoods.

Here is our spoiler-free guide to all the filming locations of All Her Fault. You'll find the locations in order of first appearance.

The All Her Fault Chicago Locations

All Her Fault Location
There are a few scenes filmed in Chicago, apart from the establishing shots.

In the first episode, Jenny is seen walking near the famous Bean sculpture in Chicago’s Millennium Park.

Collins Street Melbourne
The scene with Marissa’s husband, Peter (played by Jake Lacy), walking out of his office was filmed at a building on Collins Street, one of Melbourne’s most prestigious thoroughfares, lined with luxury boutiques and grand hotels.

TAG
In the series, the Irvines live in Wilmette, Illinois, a suburban village just north of Chicago, located along the western shore of Lake Michigan.

This establishing shot shows the Bahá’í House of Worship, a stunning white-domed temple known for its intricate lace-like architecture.

This global religion, founded in the 19th century in Persia (modern-day Iran), teaches the unity of all religions and humanity, the equality of men and women, among other peaceful principles.

The All Her Fault house

All Her Fault house
The Irvines' house is a large residence in Red Hill South on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, roughly 50 miles (80 km) south of Melbourne.

This luxurious five-bedroom mansion has a spectacular infinity pool, a spa, a tennis court, and even a small soccer field, although almost none of them are shown in the series.

Bishop’s Academy Chicago
The Saltwater Community Centre in Point Cook, just outside Melbourne, served as Bishop’s Academy, where Marissa and Peter’s son, Milo, attends school.

Yugen Dining
The restaurant in the first episode is introduced with an establishing shot of the twin-tower residential complex Marina City in Chicago.

The interior, however, was filmed at Yugen Dining, located beneath Melbourne’s Capitol Grand building in South Yarra.

The venue is notable for its dramatic design, with six-metre ceilings, a striking chandelier, and a modern Asian-fusion menu that leans heavily on premium Japanese-style cuisine.

All Her Fault Kaminskis house
The Kaminskis' house is even more impressive than the Irvines' mansion.

Completed in 2018, the Hawthorn House centres on two heavily textured concrete ‘shrouds’, which appear often in the series, linked by a walkway and a courtyard garden.

This 680 m² home also incorporates modern, sustainability-focused features, including passive solar design, concrete thermal mass, and hydronically heated floors.

All Her Fault Chicago
The press conference in the second episode was filmed at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) in South Wharf.

Chicago’s renowned Wrigley Building tower was CGI'd into the scene, creating the illusion that it takes place in New Eastside, east of the Loop and north of Millennium Park.

Port Phillip Bay coastline
The scene set three weeks earlier appears to take place on the shore of Lake Michigan, but it was likely filmed on one of the beaches in the Bayside area along the Port Phillip Bay coastline, such as Brighton Beach.

Melbourne’s skyline was digitally replaced with Chicago’s.

Mo's malted milkshakes
This scene in Ms Garcia’s house was filmed in one of the studios on Wando Grove in St Kilda East.

LH Rooftop restaurant
At the end of the second episode, Peter is on a call at the LH Rooftop restaurant, located atop the LondonHouse Chicago hotel.

National Australia Bank Headquarters
Jenny’s office building with crossed walkways in the third episode is actually the interior of the National Australia Bank Headquarters in Docklands, Melbourne.

The establishing shot, however, shows Jenny on the Chicago “L” train in the city’s downtown area, known as the Loop.

Point Ormond Lookout in Elwood
The community gathering in a park by the lake to discuss the boy’s disappearance was filmed at the Point Ormond Lookout in Elwood.

In this shot, it is even clearer that the Chicago skyline was added via CGI.

Beach Shack Elwood
The Beach Shack Elwood is a beachfront café located along Elwood’s foreshore, near the Point Ormond Lookout.

Royston Hotel in Richmond
The Royston bar was filmed at the Royston Hotel in Richmond, a cozy local pub.

In Australian pub tradition, many establishments are called “hotels,” even if they don’t offer rooms, as is the case here.

Docklands Melbourne
Apart from the aerial shot in Chicago, the marathon in the seventh episode was filmed on Bourke and Merchant Streets in Docklands, Melbourne.

I knew instantly that it was filmed in Australia by the style of the houses. And it was so obviously Brighton when they were near the beach. I love my hometown of Melbourne!

In episode one, when the husband is walking out of his office building, it is 101 Collins Street, Melbourne, which is arguably the most prestigious commercial address in Melbourne. It’s located at the ‘Paris’ end of Collins St amongst a lot of high-end designer stores. I used to work in that building, so I recognised it straight away!

I lived on Southey Street in Elwood, and our good friends lived a few doors down in that beautiful Art Deco apartment pictured here. The roof leaked like crazy.

The scenes featuring the detective’s son’s original school were filmed at Elwood Primary School. The playground and the exterior of the buildings can be seen clearly when they walk in.

Also, Palms Motel in Footscray, Melbourne, was used as one of the seedy motel scenes.

The part where Josephine and Kyle Smit were arguing about how she shouldn’t steal the kid is at Harbour Lights Landing in Docklands. You can see the Waterfront City building in the back to confirm this view!

The Chicago Marathon was filmed in Bourke St Docklands. The food vans in Merchant Street. It was a lot of fun watching them film and getting a sneak peek at.

The filming location of the beach where the body was found was Avalon Beach, near Geelong.

I knew when the home had pebble rocks for a driveway - there was no way they were in Chicago. How on earth would one shovel the snow?

Colin's wake was shot at a house right next to Elwood Beach/Bathers!

In the Beach Shack Elwood scene, the sun is setting on the wrong side, ie, in the east. The scene seems to be set on the west side of Lake Michigan, but the sun looks like it was setting over in the east. I thought maybe they filmed it in the morning, but if it’s in Elwood, that explains it.
