Where is Patience filmed? Guide to (almost) all the locations in York

Posted by

Although Patience was shot where it is set, in York, much of the filming took place in Belgium and even France.

Now back for season two, the show is an adaptation of the Franco-Belgian detective television series Astrid et Raphaëlle.

Ella Maisy Purvis as Patience Evans

The story revolves around Patience Evans, portrayed by Ella Maisy Purvis, an autistic archivist with exceptional memory and analytical skills, who works in the Police Criminal Records Office.

Channel 4 also filmed the 2023 series The Couple Next Door between England and Belgium.

Here is the most complete guide to the filming locations of Patience. They are listed in order of first appearance, with the new season two locations included below in this spoiler-free report.

The Patience locations

Patience location
The bus stop was a set built outside a chapel converted into apartments, situated next to York's medieval walls.

In some scenes, we can see Victoria Bar in the background, a new gate that was opened in the walls in 1838 to improve the flow of traffic through the city.

The City of York Police Station was filmed in a Brutalist-style building in Lier, Belgium.

This old administrative building, located in an area called Kruisbogenhofstraat, was vacant at the time of filming in 2024.

Patience York
Most of the exteriors were filmed in York, including the Lendal Bridge over the River Ouse.

This is not a medieval bridge, it was built in 1863 with Gothic style towers at each end, which once housed toll houses.

The Shambles York
The Shambles is a medieval, narrow, cobbled alleyway lined with timber-framed buildings and charming shops in the heart of York.

This is one of the most photographed streets in the UK, usually full of tourists, so it's hard to see it empty, as it appears a couple of times in the series.

Patience house
The exterior of Patience's godfather's home was filmed in a house on the quaint Precentor's Court, a narrow street close to the iconic York Minster.

York Castle Museum
If you are a Yorky, you may have noticed something strange about the York Castle Museum featured in the third episode, "The Missing Link".

Located near Clifford's Tower, the museum, which is basically dedicated to the history of everyday life in England, was only filmed from the outside.

Natural History Museum
The museum's interior was filmed in the Zoology section of the Natural History Museum in Lille, France.

Patience New Season 2 locations

Villers Abbey in Belgium
The ruins seen in the first episode of the second season, “Vampire”, were not filmed in York but quite far from there, at the remains of Villers Abbey in Belgium.

I don't understand why they needed to film in other locations outside of York.

The series was filmed partially in Belgium because it’s a British–Belgian co-production supported by Belgian financing incentives (including the Belgian Tax Shelter) and partners, so many scenes were shot there rather than exclusively in York.

Park on that double yellow line by Monk Bar, and the car will likely be towed away.
