Will Neo swallow the red pill, back down the rabbit hole?

Set in a nightmarish future, the cyberpunk Matrix trilogy (1999-2003) was an influential turning point for filmmaking, combining martial arts, state-of-the-art special effects, and a fair dose of philosophy for large audiences.

The 2021 sequel The Matrix Resurrections was primarily filmed in San Francisco, the city where the story is set, although the studio work was completed in Berlin.

The Matrix Resurrections City

The San Francisco shoot concluded in March 2020, just in time before the global lockdown, and resumed in Berlin in August.

The section of the movie planned to be filmed in Chicago (where the Wachowskis reside) was finally scrapped for budgetary reasons.

The original starring duo, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.

Welcome to our comprehensive guide to the filming locations of The Matrix Resurrections.

Where was Matrix filmed
The opening sequence when Bugs (Jessica Henwick) finds the Matrix modal, assisted by Sequoia (the Operator of the Mnemosyne played by Toby Onwumere), was partially filmed in Germany.

The street with the Heart O' the City Hotel and Anderson's vertical sign was shot at the Metropolitan Backlot adjacent to the sound stages at Studio Babelsberg in Potsdam, near Berlin.

However, the rooftop scene was filmed at the Merchants Exchange Building at 465 California Street in San Francisco.

The neon-light message in Spanish, 'Sabor a mierda', means something like 'Taste of crap'. This sign and other details indicate that we are inside a private simulation of the Matrix, run by successful video game developer, Thomas Anderson.

The sheeple
When Bugs and Morpheus (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) exit the key shop, we are back to Berlin, at the same building used to film the Moka Efti nightclub from the Babylon Berlin series, also located at Studio Babelsberg.

The cinema is projecting a fictional movie called Root of All Evil, starring Lito Rodríguez.

Lito was a main character in Sense8, the lovely Mexican actor played by Miguel Ángel Silvestre, a Netflix series also created by Lana and Lilly Wachowski.

The Anomaleum
Bugs and Morpheus get out of the Matrix jumping from a window at the north facade of the City Club of San Francisco building at Pine and Sansome Streets.

Laurence Fishburne, the actor who played Morpheus in the original trilogy, told New York Magazine that he was not invited to reprise his legendary role.

Deus Machina
Looking at the view from Thomas Anderson and Smith's office, the Deus Machina headquarters has to be the One Front Street tower in the Financial District, a 38-floor skyscraper completed in 1979.

The actor who played Agent Smith, Hugo Weaving, could not reprise his role due to scheduling conflicts with other projects.

Anderson's business partner is played by Jonathan Groff, best known for his role as FBI Special Agent Holden Ford on the Mindhunter series.

Simulatte coffee shop
The Simulatte Café, where Thomas meets Tiffany, is the Joe and the Juice bar and coffee shop located at the Russ Building at 235 Montgomery Street in San Francisco.

The Matrix House

Matrix House
The exterior of the house of the creator of the current Matrix, The Analyst, was filmed on Vallejo Street, in the heart of the Russian Hill historic district in San Francisco.

The green house featured in the second season of The OA series is also located here. In fact, we can clearly see this old manor in the establishing shot at the end of the movie.

Anderson's mysterious therapist is played by Neil Patrick Harris, the serial womanizer Barney Stinson on the CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother.

Matrix restaurant
The Chinese noodles restaurant where Sati (played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas) is reading Alice in Wonderland is the House of Nanking at 919 Kearny Street, near the iconic Transamerica Pyramid.

According to SFGATE, the short scene with Thomas having a bath with a duck on his head was filmed in a condo at 181 Fremont Street.

Anderson's home is an expensive two-bedroom luxury apartment with views over the Bay Bridge that you can rent for $24,000 a month.

Matrix filming locations
The scene when Anderson is drunk on the rooftop and tries to fly was filmed at 425 California Street, a glass-covered 26-story office skyscraper built in 1968.

Matrix theater
The theater where Bugs and Morpheus convince Anderson to be extracted is the historical KAHO (Ehemaliges Theater Karlshorst) in Berlin-Karlshorst.

Completed in 1949, the Karlshorst Theater was the cultural center of the Soviet Union in Berlin. Until 1963, the building was in the Soviet restricted area, and it was only accessible to members of the Soviet Army and civilian employees stationed in the city.

Today, the complex is undergoing restorations to become a multifunctional cultural venue.

Matrix Resurrections drehort
The establishing shot of the Japanese tatami and the Kung-Fu training scene is inspired by the Rakotzbrücke or The Devil's Bridge, located at the Azalea and Rhododendron Park Kromlau near Gablenz in Saxony (Germany).

Built in 1860, the Romantic-era Rakotzbrücke Bridge was designed to create a perfect circle when it is reflected in the waters of the lake.

To preserve the structure, it is not possible to use the bridge to cross to the other side.

Zion and Io
The warehouse of the fight against the exiles and Agent Smith is the Energy Museum Berlin, the former Steglitz Power Station (Heizkraftwerk Steglitz).

Built in 1909 and taken out of service in 1994, the power station and tram depot are located beside the Teltow Canal in West Berlin.

Trinity motorcycle
Tiffany's motorcycle workshop is the tram depot also located at the Energy Museum Berlin complex.

The exterior of the brick warehouse looks very much like the factory featured in Dark.

Also, according to the local press, film crews were spotted at Alameda Point, an area in the San Francisco Bay.

The Alameda Naval Air Station airstrip was also used in an action scene for The Matrix Reloaded.

Paramagnetic oscillation
After the sequence at Simulatte, filmed with the same stunt coordinator who also worked with Reeves on the last installments of John Wick, comes the chase scene across the city with Trinity riding a Scrambler Ducati.

The scene pictured was filmed at the intersection of Pine Street and Grant Avenue. The zombie-bot attack on the Mnemosyne crew members' car was filmed on Sansome Street, between California and Pine Streets.

The helicopter shoots the couple just around the corner on Pine Street, between Battery and Front Streets.

The catrix
However, the top of the building of the final leap is the 44 Montgomery, an office skyscraper in the Financial District.

A video posted on Reddit showed how Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss jumped themselves from the top of this 43-stories high tower, with cables attached.

The actors, who repeated the scene about 19 or 20 times over, did not use stunt doubles for the shot, recorded in the dawn light.

The theater is the old Red Army theater in Berlin Karlshorst.

The warehouse fight scene may also have been filmed in Berlin, the outside scenery you sometimes see through the windows looks very 1930s era Berlin.

Also interesting, the "husband" of Tiffany was played by Chad Stahelski. A former stuntman from the first Matrix movies and meanwhile known as the director of the John Wick movies. He was also the body double of Brandon Lee on the Crow after Brandon died.

The warehouse where Neo fights against Smith and Tiffany's motorcycle workshop is one place: the Energy Museum Berlin, the former Steglitz Power Station.
