Where was CODA filmed? Guide to all the Filming Locations

Posted by

CODA (which stands for “child of deaf adults”) is a story about Ruby Rossi, a teenager who is the only hearing member of her family.

In this coming-of-age dramedy, Ruby has a passion for singing, but her parents, who work on a fishing boat, will never be able to hear her perform.

CODA was primarily filmed in and around Gloucester, Massachusetts, the same area where this movie, shot in the summer of 2019, is set.

Emilia Jones as Ruby Rossi in Coda

Emilia Jones, who also starred in Netflix hit series Locke and Key, plays Ruby.

Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (Vikings) is her friend Miles, Daniel Durant (You) is her brother Leo, and Troy Kotsur, the Oscars 2022 winner for Best Supporting Actor, and Marlee Matlin are Ruby's hearing-impaired parents, Frank and Jackie.

Welcome to our spoiler-free guide to all the filming locations of CODA:

CODA Locations

Where was CODA filmed
Gloucester, Massachusetts is a nice coastal village on Cape Ann located just a 45-minute car ride from downtown Boston.

The small city has had a large maritime history since the first European settlers arrived in the 17th-century.

Salgado's Seafood Company
The local docks of the Salgado's Seafood Company were filmed at Gloucester's Fish Pier.

The cast of the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and Oscars 2022 winner for Best Picture had to learn and practice fishing skills.

Coda High School
Ruby attends Gloucester High School, although the location used in the film is actually the former Beverly High School, which opened in 1923 and later become Briscoe Middle School.

Today, this vacant building is in the process of refurbishment to host the Briscoe Village for Living and the Arts (BVLA).

This project aims to transform the area into a state-of-the-art affordable housing community, providing public gathering spaces using this legacy complex.

CODA theater
The interior of the theater featured later on in the movie, where the Choir's Annual Fall Concert takes place, is also from this magnificent former school, located at 7 Sohier Road in Beverly.

Coda movie house
Boston's NPR News Station WBUR News reported that director Sian Heder went location scouting in the area and stumbled on the house that served as the Rossi's family home.

She said that the "creaky clapboard cottage had a yard jammed with boats, traps, and nets", the ideal setting for the story.

Steel Derrick Quarry
One of our readers recognized the location of the Rossi's house is located on Conomo Point, Essex.

Warning: This is a private home. Do not trespass on their property or do anything else that might disturb the residents.

Steel Derrick Quarry
Ruby likes to go swimming to the former Steel Derrick Quarry, a popular spot for locals situated in the Pigeon Cove area.

Coda city
According to the local press, the bar where Ruby’s friend Gertie (played by Amy Forsyth) works as a waitress is Pratty's C.A.V at 10 Parker Street in Gloucester, located next to the fisher's harbor.

Coda drehorte
Also, Heder used a seaside Victorian manor, owned by a friend of hers where she spent some time during her childhood, as the gorgeous choirmaster's house. Eugenio Derbez plays Bernardo Villalobos, Mr. V.

These houses are private properties and we don't know the exact addresses, but it seems that some filming took place at the beautiful Conomo Point community in Essex, MA.

Lane Cove harbor
Lane’s Cove is a historical public landing harbor protected by a scenic granite storm wall.

Rockport Town Hall
Following the clue of the painting in the courtroom hall by Cape Ann artist William Lester Stevens, it looks like this scene was recorded in the board meeting room at Rockport Town Hall.

The 10-foot historic mural, capturing the essence of Rockport's industry, used to be at the former Rockport National Bank office on Main Street.

Rockport Performance Center
The audition at the Berklee College of Music was actually filmed at the Rockport Music-Shalin Liu Performance Center, an impressive concert hall in Rockport.

The mural behind the courtroom scene is by Cape Ann artist Lester Stevens. The painting was in National bank, but I just read it is now in Rockport Town Hall.

I was so moved by this movie. I'm Portuguese, but my first language is French. I saw La Famille Bélier, which I love, but CODA is much better than the french movie. I think two things make the difference: Emilia Jones' performance and, of course, the three "real" deaf actors.

Also, I found Ruby's house on Google Maps. Unfortunately, we don't have a street view. I will be looking for Bernardo's house.

I don't think it is right that you publish the address of the private homes used in the film. As a friend of the owners of the Rossi House, I ask that you kindly remove the posts that share the address.

They have already had people stopping and taking pictures of the house along with their vehicles and family members in the background. Most people are respectful, however, let's not make it easy for those who are not so kind to find a private residence to stalk.

Does anyone see the remarkable relationship between the CODA title and a coda in music? It was the first thing I thought of when it becomes clear Ruby is an amazing singer. A coda in music is what brings the piece to an end, sometimes short, often long.

This is what Ruby does to the story: she plays in the symphony of her family but, with her gift for singing, she plays the end song—going off on her own to play a symphony of her own. She is indeed a CODA. She is certainly the *movie’s* musical coda.

I love this movie. When it showed the exterior of the school my jaw dropped. I paused the movie and said that it looked like my old middle school in Beverly, MA, where I grew up. After some research, I found out that it was indeed my old middle school. So cool.
