Where was News of the World Filmed? Guide to ALL the Filming Locations

Posted by

Set in Texas in 1870, five years after the end of the American Civil War, News of the World was primarily filmed in a movie ranch near Santa Fe in New Mexico.

The story, based on the 2016 book of the same name by Paulette Jiles, revolves around a road trip through the wild West, following Tom Hanks as Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd.

Tom Hanks and Helena Zengel

Kidd goes from town to town reading newspaper articles to locals about facts and far away places they could never otherwise imagine. On his travels, he comes across a 10-year-old blonde girl (played by Helena Zengel) taken by a tribe of Kiowa people.

These are the completely spoiler-free filming locations of News of the World:

Western Town Movie Set
The results of our sleuthing revealed that most of the scenes that take place in a town were filmed in the Western Town Movie Set of the Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe.

The church from the second village, after Kidd visits Wichita Falls in North Texas and finds Johanna, is the one located in Bonanza Ranch. Built in 1955, this is a veteran and famous spot in the film industry.

The ranch has hosted many productions including The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, John Carpenter's Vampires, Stargirl, and also was used as one of the Godless series filming locations.

News of the World town
After a long trip, Kidd arrives in the bustling city of Dallas. However, -movie magic- he is still in the same filming location.

News of the World takes place in a rough and rustic environment, but the filmmakers used the latest CGI technology to adapt and expand the limited Western movie set of Bonanza Creek.

In the lower picture, you can see how the facade of a building was raised by one floor. Also, notice in the background, on the left, sits the same church used in the previous village.

The panoramic view of San Antonio with the Spanish style Mission Church is also a digital creation.

The production was filmed through November 2019. Cinematographer Dariusz Wolski commented in an interview that they were scouting various towns in New Mexico and found a bar that had been used in a Coen Brothers’ movie.

The crew redesigned the whole space in a way that “you can’t tell it’s a bar”. Also, according to the local newspaper Santa Fe New Mexican, the movie used the old Camel Rock Casino in Tesuque Pueblo as a filming and costumes location.

Scene in Santa Fe
Directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, Omagh, Captain Phillips) this beautiful old-fashioned Western has many chances to earn multiple Oscar nominations.

This is one of the biggest studio films in the awards race this year, and the industry may choose to support studio films instead of streaming platforms. Also, the critical response to the film has been generally positive from critics who praised the actor's performances, the splendid cinematography, and the score.

News of the World cast
The supporting cast includes Michael Covino as Mark Edgefield, Fred Hechinger as John Calley, Neil Sandilands as Wilhelm Leonberger, Mare Winningham as Doris Boudlin, Thomas Francis Murphy as Merritt Farley, Elizabeth Marvel as Ella Gannett, Chukwudi Iwuji as Charles Edgefield, Ray McKinnon as Simon Boudlin and Bill Camp as Willie Branholme.

The church is at top-left, and the saloon is in the center of town.

I spent many years in Santa Fe and northern New Mexico. I loved every minute of the fantastic panorama and vistas that make New Mexico's high desert so unique and endearing.

I loved the movie too. The cast, dialogue, locations, and feel were spot on for those days long ago but which are still waiting for visitors to come and enjoy.

If you do come, and I hope you do, please leave it as you found it!

News of the World is one of the few movies I have seen in the last 20 years. Very enjoyable. The world needs more like it instead of filth killing, no morals, etc.
