Where was Freaky filmed? The House and the High School Filming Locations

Posted by

Freaky, previously titled Freaky Friday the 13th, is a high school slasher movie with a body-swap twist.

This plot element was originally explored in the 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers Freaky Friday, which inspired many films including the eighties hits Vice Versa and Tom Hanks's Big.

Kathryn Newton as Millie

Kathryn Newton (The Society, Bad Teacher) plays Millie Kessler, a student who accidentally trades bodies with a serial killer called Blissfield Butcher, played by Vince Vaughn (True Detective, Swingers).

Directed by the creator of Happy Death Day Christopher Landon, Freaky was filmed in several cities in Georgia. Here is our spoiler-free filming locations guide:

Freaky City
The city where most of the movie is set, Blissfield, is actually the cute small town of Covington in Newton County. Downtown Covington features many beautiful historical buildings and has one of the prettiest squares in Georgia.

The town has been used as a backdrop for over 100 films and television shows.

It was doubling as Serenity, South Carolina, in the Netflix romantic drama Sweet Magnolias, and also as the iconic fictional town of Mystic Falls in The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Legacies series.

Blissfield Valley High
The Blissfield Valley High School is the Denmark High School in Alpharetta (Fulton County), a suburb located about 30 miles north of Atlanta.

Atlanta Magazine reported that some additional scenes were shot on the grounds of the Sawnee Mountain Park in Cumming (Forsyth County), and in Norcross near the One Heart Church.

Freaky Drehorte
The filmmakers used as a model the perfectly sized Mayan pyramid of Chichen Itza (also known as El Castillo or the Kukulkan Temple), a very popular attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mexico.

However, in the movie, La Dola is an ancient Aztecan dagger used in ritual sacrifice. The Maya were native people of Yucatan and Central America areas, while the Aztec civilization covered most of what Today is northern and central Mexico.

Also, the “instructions for use” on the weapon are not written in any pre-Columbian language, but in Spanish, the language of the conquistadores. But hey, who cares!

Blissfield shopping center location
The Discount Bonanza shop in the mall was filmed in the Beauty Master, a cosmetics store located at Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth.

Looper reported that the production only required over 30 days of filming.

Freaky house
We also found the house featured in the first scene of the movie, where four teenagers are brutally murdered by the Blissfield Butcher.

The Callan Crest is a $5.5 million European-inspired stone mansion (only $2,6 according to Realtor), on 18 acres estate with scenic views of the North Georgia Mountains in Cumming.

Built in 1999, the 11,000 square foot property boasts 6 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a swimming pool with spa, a tennis court, a barn with horse stalls, and a wood paneling 2-story foyer with a grand staircase.
