Where was The Prom filmed? The Edgewater, -Indiana- Mall Filming Locations

Posted by

The Prom is a Netflix musical comedy following a group of Broadway actors traveling to the fictional town of Edgewater, Indiana, to support a lesbian student banned from bringing her girlfriend to the high school prom.

Although the movie is also set in New York, The Prom was filmed entirely in California.

The Prom cast

The film, directed by Ryan Murphy (the creator of many popular shows like Glee, Pose, American Horror Story, The Politician, and Ratched), is an adaptation of the musical of the same name that premiered in Atlanta in 2016.

The all-star cast includes Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden, Andrew Rannells, Keegan-Michael Key, Kerry Washington, Ariana DeBose, and newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman.

Here is our spoiler-free guide to the filming locations of The Prom.

Where was The Prom filmed
The opening of Eleanor: The Eleanor Roosevelt Musical in New York City appears to take place in the 1913 Shubert Theatre at 225 West 44th Street on Broadway.

However, according to New York Post's Page Six, permission for filming was denied, so the filmmakers decided to build a complete replica of this entire section of Broadway in a four-acre abandoned lot in downtown Los Angeles. It took up to six months to complete the set.

The Orpheum Theatre location
The interior was filmed in a real venue at the Orpheum Theatre, also in Downtown Los Angeles. Opened in 1926, this elegant historical movie palace has played host to many legendary names in show business like Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington.

In more recent years, the theatre served as the location for television, film, and music videos, including America's Got Talent, The Apprentice, Last Action Hero, and Guns N' Roses' November Rain, just to name a few.

Sardi's restaurant
The bar where the quartet of performers Dee Dee Allen, Barry Glickman, Angie Dickinson, and Trent Oliver decide to embrace Emma's cause is a set inspired by Sardi's restaurant at 234 West 44th Street in Manhattan.

The real Sardi's, located across the street from the Shubert Theatre, is considered an institution on Broadway. The eatery is famous for featuring a dining room with celebrity caricatures lining the walls.
