The movie was under development since 2006; director and writer Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, A Few Good Men) had planned to involve Steven Spielberg in the project.

Sacha Baron Cohen was originally cast to play the Yippie activist Abbie Hoffman that year before he became world-famous after the success of Borat.

The all-stars academy awards of protests is also composed by Eddie Redmayne (Fantastic Beasts) as Tom Hayden, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen, Aquaman) as Bobby Seale, and Jeremy Strong (Succession) as Jerry Rubin. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Frank Langella, and Michael Keaton are also featured in the cast.

  1. The courthouse room was filmed at Community Baptist Church of love in Paterson. Quite an impressive (and convincing) feat for an offsite location. I was there playing a courtroom protestor, and at City Hall of Newark, a photojournalist.

  2. The QXTs Goth night club on Mulberry Street in Newark, NJ, was also used. The dark room where Hoffman tells the story. The scene shows standing in front of a stone wall with candles.
