Inspired by The Lion King, Beyoncé's visual album and musical movie Black Is King takes you into a journey to the African tradition, following a young king reclaiming his identity and ancestral legacy.

Multidisciplinar top artists like Jay-Z, Pharrell Williams, Tina Knowles-Lawson, Naomi Campbell, Kelly Rowland, Lupita Nyong'o, and many more were involved in the making. Filming took place just before the Coronavirus outbreak, between August to December 2019.

The countries listed in the credits include South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Belgium, England, and The US. We instantly recognized many of the magnificent filming locations where Black Is King was filmed. Here is our report about the production of this one and a half-hour long spectacular video clip:

Where was Black Is King filmed
The majestic hut with large horns shown at the beginning of the film is a traditional Zulu beehive hut. The Zulus are an ethnic group originating from the KwaZulu-Natal province in the east of South Africa. Doing some research we find out that the scene was shot at the Shakaland Zulu Village, located around 95 miles (150 Km) north of the city of Durban.

The Zulu village
The village is a replica of a traditional Zulu homestead, built on the old set of a 1985 TV show called Shaka Zulu. You can visit and stay overnight in the place to immerse yourself in the experience of knowing first-hand the ancient tribal Zulu culture. The surrounding nature is also stunning.

Black Is King house
Our next stop is the opulent Mediterranean Revival-style mansion The Beverly House, located at 1011 N Beverly Dr in Beverly Hills, near one of the Ratched locations. Designed by Gordon Kaufmann and built in the 1920s, the estate is located only three blocks from Sunset Boulevard. The house boasts 19 bedrooms, 29 bathrooms, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and the large gardens with cascading waterfalls that appear in Black Is King - Map

The iconic property, also featured in The Godfather (the horse-head scene was shot here) and The Bodyguard movies, is on the market for $135 million. The real estate agency listing says that the manor is 'shown only to pre-qualified buyers' so you can't just pop in for a visit.

A symbol of Nigeria
The National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, a neighborhood of the Lagos metropolis, has remained a symbol of Nigeria. Completed in 1976 and shaped like a military hat, the monument was inspired by the Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna, Bulgaria. Due to the poor maintenance an the government's disregard for the arts sector, the complex premises became a lawless place. In recent times, security has improved, but still, the building may end up converted into a duty-free shopping mall. Image courtesy of Disney - Map

Ndebele church
The white church decorated with colorful geometric Ndebele patterns is the Roman Catholic Church in Emthambothini (Although some reports name a place called Maphoko o Mabokho). This 1975 temple is located near Siyabuswa in the old KwaNdebele territory of South Africa.

Black Is King City
This location was pretty easy to find as it was recently featured in the Netflix movie The Last Days of American Crime. The Ponte City Apartments is a 1975 cylinder-shaped skyscraper located in the Berea neighborhood of Johannesburg, South Africa. Image courtesy of Disney and Geoffrey Hancock - Map

Schwarz ist König Drehort
These peculiar boulder rock formations are also a popular shooting location in California. This dusty landmark in the Mojave Desert is situated in the Horsemen's Center Park near the Apple Valley town.

Singing in the Havasu Falls
When I think about gorgeous scenic waterfalls in the US, I always recall the magnificent Havasu Falls in Arizona. The falls, known for the dazzling blue-green pool at the bottom, are located on the grounds of the Havasupai Indian Reservation in the Grand Canyon. Image courtesy of Disney - Map
