Where was Space Force filmed? Guide to all the Filming Locations

Posted by

Up there - Out there: Space is hard, but the new sixth branch of the United States Armed Forces, Space Force, will try to bring back American boots to the Moon.

A charismatic four-star general under pressure and a sort of Dr. Strangelove scientist will team up to make it possible.

Space Force Locations

This hilarious show is headlined by Steve Carell (the noteworthy Michael Scott from The Office) as General Mark R. Naird, and John Malkovich (who doesn't know Malkovich?) as Dr. Adrian Mallory.

Space Force is set in Wild Horse, Colorado, a real small town in Cheyenne County, although all the filming for the first season took place in and around Los Angeles. The second season was filmed in Vancouver.

Of course, we have the best filming locations report of the comedy series, now back for season two.

The military airforce base
The exterior shots were filmed at California State University - Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), in Carson (South Bay area of Los Angeles County).

However, the establishing shots of the military agency headquarters are basically the CSUDH campus with the buildings rearranged using VFX of a view overlooking the College Of the Canyons (COC) Canyon Country Campus at Sierra Highway in Santa Clarita (pictured on the bottom).

Location Manager Kyle Sucher confirmed that the Space Force complex, set in the series in an old NORAD facility (North American Aerospace Defense Command), is inspired by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory research institute (JPL) in La Cañada Flintridge, California-

Where is Space Force filmed
The main office building, where Naird's helipad is located, is the modern CSUDH Theatre.

And where is Kokomo? Fun fact: The 1988 song by The Beach Boys talks about an invented, idyllic place off the Florida Keys.

This tune was also featured in an episode of the second season of What We Do in the Shadows.

Kokomo was originally included in Tom Cruise's Cocktail soundtrack.

Space agency building
The Pickering Building, where, according to Angela (Tawny Newsome), all the vibranium stolen from Wakanda is stored is The Leo F. Cain Library.

Designed by A. Quincy Jones, this Brutalist edifice opened in 1972.

The California State University
I don't know but I've been told, outer space is very cold - The modern wing of the same library was used to film the compound's restaurant scenes, the elegant alternative to Meal Armstrong's hamburger stand.

Potus complex Proportionate Response
The interiors of the spiral staircase building are the former Toyota Motor Sales USA Headquarters at 19001 S Western Avenue in Torrance.

Many exterior scenes were also shot in this 110-acre complex built in 1982, vacant since Toyota moved to Texas in 2016.

The Homecoming series GEIST Group offices were also filmed here.

Wild Horse Colorado
The Naird household is located at 24804 Cerezo Court in Santa Clarita, the town where probably most of the outdoor scenes were shot.

The Californian city has been featured in thousands of productions, as it hosts more than twenty sound stages, ten movie ranches, and lots of film-friendly locations.

Space Force drehort
At the beginning of the series, Mark is shopping at a gas station in Wild Horse.

The sequence was filmed on the Four Aces Movie Set (renamed Four Deuces), a motel in Lake Los Angeles near Palmdale.

This set, also appearing in the last episode of Space Force, has been used multiple times in all kinds of movies and TV shows, including the series Ratched.

Eatery It's Good To Be Back On The Moon episode
The Backwoods Inn from Mark's date in episode 9 is a real restaurant steakhouse, situated at 17846 Sierra Highway in Canyon Country near Santa Clarita.

Space Force season two
The second season was filmed at Martini Film Studios in Langley near Vancouver.

The exterior of the Space Force headquarters, pictured, is a vacant office complex at 5255 Heather Street in South Cambie (Vancouver).

This building has been rented out to film productions many times: shows like The Magicians, Arrow, Charmed, iZombie, Legends of Tomorrow, Legion, or The Mysterious Benedict Society have recorded scenes here.

Rounding off the main cast are Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation, Sonic the Hedgehog) as social media manager Tony, and young actress Diana Silvers as Erin, the general's teen daughter.

  1. The spiral staircase building at the bottom is the former Toyota Sales Headquarters in Torrance, CA. It was also seen in Homecoming.

  2. For one second the opening of episode 4 shows a setting of Wild Horse, Colorado.

It's actually above the Crestview area of San Carlos, CA, for some reason.

  3. The spiral staircase interior is also used in episode 5 of Mythic Quest, as well as the circular stage/planter.

Saw it almost immediately after watching Space Force.

  4. But it's all a good match to the style of buildings at Peterson AFB - former HQ Space Command

The eerie number of matches and good guesses as to how real Space Force turned out. Remember production started before the name was even settled. And Guardians for members was not settled until a year after 1st season was out.
