Where was Doctor Sleep filmed? Frazier, New Hampshire, the Overlook Hotel & Filming Locations

The sequel of one of the best horror movies of all time, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980), comes to cinemas almost 40 years later.

Doctor Sleep is based on the 2013 novel of the same name created by Stephen King. It is written and directed by Mike Flanagan, who delivered the outstanding Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass.

Ewan McGregor stars as Danny Torrance, the grown-up child from the first film, who's got psychic abilities. He is still haunted by the events that took place at the Overlook Hotel.

Rebecca Ferguson is Rose the Hat, the leader of a sinister cult called the True Knot. Kyliegh Curran completes the main cast as Abra Stone, a young girl with 'the shining' power.

So, where was Doctor Sleep filmed? The film is partially set in the fictional town of Frazier, New Hampshire, but it was filmed in Atlanta and the surrounding area. Here is a spoiler-free guide to the filming locations of the movie:

The Overlook Hotel in the Rocky Mountains plays again a key role in the film. The exteriors are inspired by the Timberline Lodge in Mount Hood, Oregon.

However, as in the original The Shining, director Mike Flanagan decided to film all the hotel scenes on a sound stage.

The set recreating all the rooms, now left to rot in decades since the Torrance family fled the place, was built in the Blackhall Studios near Atlanta.

The iconic Colorado Lounge from the 1980 production (below) was inspired by the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite (California). Most of the interiors of the movie and also the frozen labyrinth were shot here.

IMDb reports that three shots were reused from the original The Shining footage; The stunning aerial views from the opening scenes including Saint Mary Lake island (pictured) and the car driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road, both in Glacier National Park (Montana).

The shots were degrained, recolored as day-for-night, and had snow digitally added. The third one is the elevator blood scene.

The opening scene in Florida was shot on the waterfront near the Riverview Hotel in St. Marys, according to local media WJCT.

The fictional town of Frazier, New Hampshire, was filmed in Covington square near the Mystic Grill, a restaurant known because the set makes part of The Vampire Diaries, Legacies and the Sweet Magnolias filming locations.

The Plaza Theatre in Atlanta is an art deco landmark, which opened in 1939 and is still operating as a movie theatre.

A small sequence set in the 70s was filmed at East Beach in St Simons. We also discovered that a camping scene was shot in Stone Mountain Park. The supermarket was filmed in Fayetteville.

Neat to read up on, because I was always told the hotel in the first movie was inspiration by the famous Mount Washington Hotel in New Hampshire (a real place). So is Anniston, NH a fictional place too? Also, Where is Covington Square and the Mystic Grille?
