The Island of Samoa in Hobbs & Shaw: Filming Locations Guide

Posted by

Hobbs & Shaw is a spin-off of the popular Fast & Furious franchise, featuring Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) and his reluctant partner in crime and fun, The Mechanic Jason Statham.

This high-octane blockbuster takes place two years after the events of the previous film The Fate of the Furious, where producers and studio executives noticed the comedic chemistry between the two.

The duo will be challenged by Idris Elba (who played a version of himself in the Netflix series Turn Up Charlie), in the role of the villain Brixton Lore.

Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible - Fallout, The Crown), also stars as an MI6 agent and Deckard's sister Hattie Shaw. Eiza González (Alita, Baby Driver) plays the mysterious billionaire Madam M.

Hobbs & Shaw is set in London and Luke's childhood home on the island of Samoa.

The sections of the movie happening in the South Pacific Ocean nation were filmed on the wonderful island of Kauai in Hawaii. Here is our almost spoiler-free guide to the shooting locations of the film.

The Cheesegrater
The spectacular skyscraper scene was filmed in The Leadenhall Building (aka The Cheesegrater), located in the City of London financial district.

There are also a few scenes set in top London landmarks like the Millennium Bridge, Piccadilly Circus, and the street leading to the front of St. Paul's Cathedral, Ludgate Hill.

The center of Glasgow doubled as London for the car chase scenes. The streets around George Square were closed down to traffic to host the production.

Some more filming took place in the M8 motorway and the Kingston Bridge.

This cool subterranean garage is the Pennington Street Warehouse vaults in London, a location that was also used in Mission: Impossible Fallout.

In the movie, the entrance is at The Carpenters Arms pub in London at 73 Cheshire Street.

Russian thief palace
Madam M mansion in Moscow was filmed in the 18th-century country house West Wycombe Park in Buckinghamshire.

The manor house provided all the interiors and the exterior for the shoot including the facade, which was digitally painted green.

The Russian decorative elements and the green color were added to the film in post-production.

Snowflake building in Chernobyl Ukraine
The Eggborough Power Station near Selby (North Yorkshire) was a coal-fired plant that closed down in September 2018.

Hence it was the perfect timing to shoot here some of the most spectacular action scenes of the movie, using as a backdrop the eight massive cooling towers of the old industrial facility.

The interiors were filmed in the larger pavilion of the Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre in Hampshire, a pillar-free event space with 8m high ceilings.

Hobbs & Shaw in Samoa

Hobbs and Shaw Samoa
The scenes taking place in Samoa were filmed on Kauai Island. The Old Sugar Mill of Koloa is a national historic landmark, which served as a key location for the last part of the movie.

According to Reel News Hawaii, the set of Hobbs's family house is located near Gillin's Beach (the foundations are visible in Google Maps).

Chopper action scene
The helicopter and the trucks have been composited into footage shot in the Nā Pali Coast, on the northwest shore of Kauai.

Much of this stunning fifteen-mile stretch of coastline is inaccessible due to its characteristic sheer cliffs, and almost there are no roads.

  1. Ha! I knew it was Hawaii and not Samoa! Couldn’t believe for a second that the cliffs and the hair raising pics of the chopper and trucks in action was actually shot in the low lying island of Samoa 😁

  2. I knew the first chase scene was in Glasgow outside the Piper bar. I passed there whilst on holiday
