Primarily set around a fictional bank called Benevolent, Straw was filmed in and around Atlanta.
The film stars Taraji P. Henson as Janiyah, a single mother whose already challenging life unravels catastrophically over the course of a single day.

The Benevolent Bank in Straw
In the movie, it seems like the Benevolent Bank branch is just across the street from Janiyah’s store, but in reality, they are about three and a half miles apart.
The bank’s exterior was filmed at Prime Integrative Health, a chiropractic clinic located at 2891 Lakewood Avenue in Lakewood Heights, Atlanta.
However, the interior scenes were shot on a set built at Tyler Perry Studios in southwest Atlanta.

Where was Straw filmed?
Janiyah’s house doesn’t look so bad: she lives in a small apartment on Grape Street in the Old Fourth Ward neighbourhood, very close to downtown Atlanta.
Built in 1972, the building comprises 16 studio and one-bedroom apartments, ranging from 650 to 800 square feet.
Recent listings show rents falling between approximately $1,250 and $1,350 per month.

The KIPP Vision Primary School in the Lakewood Heights neighborhood of Atlanta waserved as the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, where Janiyah's daughter attends.

Interestingly, the filmmakers did not change the name of the store where Janiyah works; it is the real Beauty Land Beauty Supply on Campbellton Road.
The scene where the rude policeman runs her off the road was also filmed on this street.
