Where was Rebecca filmed? The Manderley House Filming Location

Posted by

"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again..." The new Netflix remake of Rebecca, the film directed by Alfred Hitchcock that won two Oscars in 1940, is revisiting the iconic stately home of Manderley.

Rebecca was filmed in the French Riviera and the United Kingdom; Manderley is an amalgam of several filming locations.

Lily James as Mrs de Winter

The original story is based on the 1938 novel by Daphne du Maurier. This romantic drama starring Lily James (Baby Driver, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again) and Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) is set in Cornwall, the beautiful region in southwestern England.

Manderley, the grand house on the cliff by the sea becomes a character too, full of secrets, treasures, and fears. Here is our complete guide to the filming locations of Rebecca.

Le Regina Hotel
The film begins with the narrator (she never gets a first name) working as Mrs. Van Hopper's assistant in Le Régina Hotel.

As you can see in the picture, the resort is not located in Montecarlo near the seaside, but Nice (France) over a hill. The former Excelsior Régina Palace served as a luxurious hotel between 1897 and 1935, and it was reconverted in the 1930s into an apartment building.

Unfortunately, modern cars are nowhere near as elegant and glamorous as vintage ones.

Rebecca hotel
The lobby and the 'oyster' restaurant, where the young inexperienced girl meets the handsome British aristocrat Maxim de Winter, were also filmed on location at Le Régina.

Queen Victoria once stayed in one of the hotel's magnificent suites. Mrs. Van Hopper's suite (Ann Dowd) was filmed at Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, England.

Where was Rebecca filmed
The Exotic Garden of Monaco is a real landmark located in the tiny European sovereign city-state.

Perched on a cliff with balconies overlooking the Mediterranean sea, this romantic spot garden hosts plants coming from several faraway arid zones.

The beach in the French Riviera
The small rocky beach is in the Bay of Antibes Billionaires. Antibes is the name of the Côte d’Azur town where the beach is located, and Billionaires because of the rich people and multiple wealthy mansions that have packed the area since the 19th-century.

Next to the beach stands the Belle Epoque Villa Eilenroc and gardens, designed by Charles Garnier (the architect of famous opera in Paris). Nowadays, the villa is a park open to the public.

Rebecca House
Back in England, the Manderley's front courtyard scenes were filmed in Cranborne Manor near Wimborne Minster in Devon.

Originally a hunting lodge, this 17th-century manor was not big enough to depict the famous house, so the facade was enlarged in post-production with a bit of CGI help.

Manderley house
Mr de Winter carries Mrs de Winter across the threshold and -movie magic!- we are now in Hatfield House, Hertfordshire.

This Jacobean-style country manor was home to the Salisbury saga, one of the most influential families in English history. The villainous housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas) receives the couple in the stunning Marble Hall.

The interior rooms
The tour through the grand rooms and halls of Hatfield House goes by the King James I drawing room, with paintings and tapestries covering the walls, and the library, pictured below.

The property was also featured recently as the Bridgerton series house, in Enola Holmes, The Great, and many more movies and TV shows like Wonder Woman, Trust, or Taboo.

The long hall
The elegant interior passage called the Armoury (that in the film gives access to Rebecca's wing), is decorated with chequered black and white marble floor.

The gold-plated Long Gallery ceiling was inspired by the Doge’s Palace in Venice.

The Manderley Ball scene was shot in the Grand Staircase Hall. Manderley is like a space of dreams, a composite of many different bits of houses.

Rebecca bedroom
However, the massive bedroom was filmed in the 16th century Loseley Park house in Guildford (Surrey).

According to Netflix, the corridor with marble statues is from Petworth House (West Sussex).

Manderley Garden
The estate of Manderley's garden scenes were filmed in the pond at Mapperton House in Dorset, voted the "Nation's Finest Manor" by Country Life magazine in 2006.

Ou est tourné Rebecca
The impressive rock layers and cliffs on the seaside were shot at Hartland Quay bay in Devon.

Rebecca's boathouse was built here on location. The scene of the court case in the village of Kerrith in Cornwall was also filmed in Hartland Quay, in the only street of this old harbor settlement.

Rebecca drehort
The scenes of the doctor's office building in London were filmed at the Osterley House in Isleworth.

This park-estate, which used to be a country retreat for wealthy families of London, was also recently featured in the new The Secret Garden movie.
