Where was Troop Zero filmed? The Wiggly, Georgia, town Filming Location

Posted by

Troop Zero was filmed in Louisiana, although the film is set in the 1970s in the fictional town of Wiggly, Georgia.

The plot revolves around a bunch of misfit kids with no smartphones, who enter a Birdie Scouts national competition to be recorded on NASA’s Voyager Golden Record.

This sort of message in a bottle is still sailing the hyperspace on board the Voyager 1 spacecraft, launched in 1977. It contains a selection of images and sounds from planet Earth, curated by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan.

The movie is the second film together for Janney and Grace, who co-starred in the 2017 black comedy I, Tonya. Troop Zero was directed by the female duo Bert and Bertie.

This Amazon Studios production combines references to Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs with the color palettes and bizarre characters of Wes Anderson's cinematic universe.

Here is our guide to filming locations of Troop Zero, a film inspired by a Lucy Alibar play called Christmas and Jubilee Behold The Meteor Shower.

Filming the movie in a park in Louisiana
Principal photography mainly took place in the Fairview-Riverside State Park in Madisonville, Louisiana.

The scouting troop plays, patrols, and collects badges on the grounds of the beautiful swampy bayou that is most often associated with the Southeastern part of the United States.

The 99 acres park set along the banks of the Tchefuncte River includes camping and caravan facilities, a picnic area, and the Otis historic house.

The real Wiggly, Georgia, town

Wiggly Georgia
Most of the scenes of the rural town of Wiggly, Georgia, are set in Lutcher, located around 50 miles west of New Orleans in St. James Parish (Louisiana).

The Texas and Detiller street junction (pictured), near the Lutcher United Methodist Church, appears in a few sequences.

Wiggly library city
The Wiggly library is Lutcher's The United States Postal Service building. The bus station is also located in this small square in Texas street.

The filmmakers added some vintage signs and ads to the area ('Keep your car running its best!').

Boutte Bayou Restaurant Luling

Troop Zero drehort
The Wiggly troupe, on their way to the Jamboree Birdies festival at Marietta, cross on the historic 1929 Chef Menteur Bridge near Fort Macomb.

Located on U.S. Hwy 90 over Chef Menteur Pass east of New Orleans, this rusty three-span polygonal Warren bridge was, as all the region, damaged by the power of the 2005 Hurricane Katrina.

Piggly Wiggly
Entertainment Weekly reported that Troop Zero debuted to positive reviews at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

The film shows how 'both the kid and adult characters come together to overcome their bullies'. Actress Viola Davis, who was bullied as a kid, cried during filming remembering traumatic childhood experiences portrayed in the movie.

Troop Zero cast
By the way that Wiggly in Georgia has nothing to do with the Piggly Wiggly grocery stores in Georgia and even less with the mysterious Alabama man found dead in a Piggly Wiggly freezer!

Mckenna Grace plays Christmas Flint, the little girl dreaming of life in outer space. The supporting cast includes Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder, Fences) as Miss Rayleen, comedian Jim Gaffigan as Ramsey Flint, and Allison Janney (Juno, The Help) as Miss Massey.

  1. Wonderful locations. As a small town Texas resident I really appreciate the beauty of rural landscape and town squares. As a person who was bullied all through school and even into adulthood, I loved the story line.
