Where was Beauty and the Beast filmed? The Castle & ALL the Filming Locations

Posted by
The live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast is based on the 1991 Disney animated film, a tale as old as time.

Beauty and the Beast was filmed mostly on the sound stages and backlot at Shepperton Studios in the UK. 27 beautiful and intricate sets were built there. The rooms in the castle of the Beast combine French Rococo and Baroque with other European architectural styles.

The movie brings the romance to life using the most advanced technology, blending spectacular CGI with real-world places and actors.

The cast is led by Hollywood stars Emma Watson and Dan Stevens and includes celebrities like Ewan McGregor, Luke Evans, Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson, and Josh Gad.

Let's go behind the scenes to find the real-life places of inspiration and filming locations for this timeless story, set in 18th-century France.

The Beauty and the Beast Castle

The ballroom floor follows the pattern in the ceiling of Braunau in Rohr Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in Rohr in Niederbayern (Bavaria, Germany).

The big chandeliers are like the ones at the Palace of Versailles in France.

Belle’s bedroom is based on the Hall of Mirrors at the Nymphenburg Palace in Munich, Germany.

This 17th-century Baroque-style royal palace was the main summer residence for the former rulers of Bavaria.

The castle Library room
The library is modeled after the Biblioteca Joanina of the University of Coimbra in Portugal.

The books of this magnificent 18th-century monument are protected from insects by a colony of bats that hunt bugs during the night.

The Beauty and the Beast Villeneuve Town

The Villeneuve village
The closest place in real life to the fictional town of Villeneuve is the village of Conques in the Aveyron in southern France.

This Occitan village features many narrow medieval streets and plenty of Romanesque-style architecture.

The town square
The fountain in the main square is inspired by the one in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Bavaria, Germany.

Today, this gorgeous medieval town is a tourist attraction that has preserved many half-timbered houses lined in cobblestone streets.

Gaston on a horse in the forest
Essentially, the only real filming locations out of the soundstages are the Winterfold Forest and Hurtwood, situated near the studios, also in Surrey, and the prominent hill of Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire.
