Where was Mechanic: Resurrection filmed? Filming Locations Guide

Posted by

The careers of both leading actors Jason Statham (Snatch, Spy) and Jessica Alba (Sin City) have seen better days, but this action-packed summer blockbuster came with many interesting filming locations and a little surprise.

This cool action flick is a thrilling globetrotter. Mechanic: Resurrection was filmed in Thailand, Malaysia, Brazil, Australia, and Bulgaria.

The movie is the sequel to the 2011 film The Mechanic, which is a remake of an original 1972 film of the same name starring Charles macho Bronson.

The story revolves around elite agent Arthur Bishop, who is specialized in killing the most dangerous men in the world by making murder look like an accident.

Here is our spoiler-free guide to all the filming locations of Mechanic: Resurrection. We have sorted the locations into chronological order.

Mechanic: Resurrection locations

Santos Adventure Marine
After faking his own death, Bishop keeps a low profile living in Rio de Janeiro working as a scuba diver instructor, or something like that.

The establishing shots of the opening sequence in the Carioca city show the iconic Christ the Redeemer massive statue, Copacabana Beach, and the Sugarloaf Mountain.

Filming in Sugarloaf Mountain
There are a few restaurants in the area of the cable car station on Urca Mountain (from where you take the cable car to Sugarloaf Mountain), but the 'churrascaria' from the movie was built in a studio in Bangkok, Thailand.

The only section of the action sequence filmed on location is when they take the bad guys to get into the gondola (pictured).

Mechanic Resurrection Island
After the unwanted visit, Bishop flees to Thailand. In the film, he meets his friend, Mei (played by Michelle Yeoh, known for her role in Crazy Rich Asians and also more recently in Gunpowder Milkshake) in Koh Lipe island in Southern Thailand.

However, the real location of the quiet resort where Jessica Alba spends most of the time in a bikini is Koh Yao Yai. This is one of the less touristically developed islands in the area of Phuket, in Phang Nga Bay.

Mechanic Resurrection Thailand
Atlas of Wonders has tracked down the beach where Mechanic: Resurrection was filmed.

Laem Had Beach is a popular spot in the area, featuring long white sandbank formations that go into the sea when the tide is out (in the picture, situated on the right of the image).

Koh Yao Yai is separated by this narrow sandbar of its sister island Koh Yao Noi

Mechanic Resurrection Beach
But if you try to make a booking on Mei's place for the diving season, you may be a bit disappointed.

Apparently, the production got the permit to build all the buildings, including Arthur's cabin and the pier, as there is just a small bar on the whole beach.

Wat Arun temple
I have to say that this beach looks more spectacular seen from the air than if you are visiting the place. The shoot took place in January 2015.

The establishing shot in Bangkok shows the famous Wat Arun temple and the Chao Phraya River, pictured.

The Thai house
The Thai house with the pool courtyard is the Fifth Element Villa, an opulent tropical mansion available to rent on Phuket's northwest coast.

Riah Crain warlord in Malaysia
Arms dealer Riah Crain (played by Sam Hazeldine) takes Bishop's new girlfriend and he's forced to tackle a list of targets.

Several shots in Malaysia were filmed in the colonial streets of George Town in Penang.

Penjara Kaedah prison
The Penjara Kaedah high-security prison was filmed in an abandoned prison in Chanthaburi (Thailand), although the exterior of the island was made using computer-generated imagery.

The next target takes Arthur to Australia. The cool scene of the hanging swimming pool was made with some CGI and green screens.

Adrian Cook's tower is a real skyscraper, the Regus Sydney Circular Quay, situated at 20 Martin Place.

The swimming pool skyscraper
But the real spot of the scene with Cook is getting ready for his last dive was filmed in a house overlooking Kata Noi Beach called Villa Amanzi in Phuket.

This 6-bedroom mansion with panoramic sea views from every room features a luxurious 50-feet (15-meters) ‘floating’ infinity pool on top of a dramatic cliff-top location.

Sydney's Harbour Bridge and the Opera House were added in the background, in the place of the Andaman Sea.

The last target, Max Adams (played by Tommy Lee Jones) takes the action to the seaside city of Varna in Bulgaria.

In the film, Adams spent a fortune restoring a memorial to Communism to transform it into his fortress with a hidden U-boat submarine base included.

This place really exists but it's not located near the coast but at the top of a remote mountain in the Bulgarian Balkans.

Abandoned soviet monument Bulgaria
In Atlas of Wonders, we wrote about the wondrous Buzludzha Monument in 2013. This awesome UFO-looking memorial with mosaic-covered interior opened in 1981.

After the fall of the communist bloc in 1991, the complex was abandoned and almost collapsed. Today, there is some hope for this giant circular pavilion, as an international team has been restoring the structure since 2020.

You can check out more pictures of this amazing place in our dedicated report via the last link.

Buzludzha Monument
This scene in the hall of the red colosseum was made digitally recreating the grandiose interior as it was before to be ravaged by illegal scrap dealers.

Buzludzha also served as inspiration for the Time Variance Authority agency in Marvel's Loki series.

The studio work was done at the Nu Boyana Film Studios in Sofia, the Bulgarian capital city. The underwater scenes were recorded in the U Stage at Pinewood Studios in England.
